OcUK Dieters Progress Thread

Hi there,

This isn't really a dieting question, but rather a general fitness one, so sorry in advance for the slight derail :)

I'm currently getting back into playing rugby after having not played for a good few years. However, I've noticed that my general fitness is not as good as it used to be and I feel myself flagging towards the end of a game or training session. I'm going to start running to try and improve this, but I'm unsure what to do (as daft as that sounds!)?

Is it a case of run as much as possible as often as possible, or shortish distances a few times a week, or a long distance once a week etc? Any help would be appreciated :)

Hi. This isn't my forté at all so I had a scout about for you and found this:

http://www.rugby.org/articles/rugtrain.htm

I'm sure there are other members on here who can help though - especially in the sport forum.

Good luck!

needs to put on not loose ^_^ any one got some tips , i am 6ft 3 and only 9 and a half stone :/
Eat. And then when you think you've eaten enough, eat some more. I bet if you actually list what you eat in a day you're not eating anywhere near as much as you think you are :)

Would like to tone up at bit but due to back neck, not able to do this.

However, HUGE life change coming up which means that I am going to make myself do some walking.

Not huge by any stretch of the imagination - just not happy being the size I am. And there is only so much that can be done by eating sensibly - exercise is needed as well.

Good luck to you all ;)

Cheers, that looks pretty useful :)

And I like the sound of 'fartlekking' :p

note that interval training along the lines of HIIT will increase your v02max, and thus enhance your ability to go at breakneck speed in short bursts - your particular query was about flagging towards the end of a game, for which an increase in stamina is what you are after. For this youre better off sustaining a pace for a period of time, and as often as your legs will allow. Fartlek is (imho) a good call combining both of these, to up your stamina and help your v02max :)

You want to gain some weight then eat. It's that simple. Judging by what you've said you eat in a day I can see why you're not putting any weight on :)
Everybody is different. The amount you show you're eating there might be plenty for some and nowhere near enough for others. It's obviously not enought for you. Up the size of your portions and add in a mid-morning snack and another after lunch. This doesn't mean stuff your face full of crap. Try and eat healthily, but just eat more.

You won't gain any weight when you are only eating around 1800 calories per day. Not only that but thats including calorie dense foods like chocolate. Without the chocolate we are probably talking less than 1500!

To put it bluntly, you are eating about the right amount for a 12 year old girl. :p

Desmo said it all above.... Eat more. Much more. As an example I have to eat around 3000-3200 calories just to maintain my current weight. To gain I need to up it to at the very least 3600 per day and I usually go to 4000.

How much do you weigh? Age? Sex? Height?

EDIT: Okay I just noticed that you posted your stats already. 6ft 3 and 9 1/2 stone. Ouch. Mate it really is not suprising you weigh so little with the amount of food you are consuming. You have been starving yourself. At 6'3" you are extremely underweight. You need to be eating probably twice what you currently are each day. There is no two ways about it, eat until you feel sick, then eat some more and do it consistently.

Drop the chocolate and crisps, they are useless. Fill up on Rice, pasta, lean meat, potatoes. Get in a lot of other calorie dense foods like peanuts/peanut butter and drink a lot of milk (unless you are lactose intolerant). Eat once every 2-3 hours and just keep ploughing it down you.

ok Gordy, I want to loose the weight but build a physique, what are the best foods to up my calorie intake?

I'm 5"11 1/2 and currently weigh 14 5.

What exactly are your goals mate? I'm a little confused by your wording there. Do you want to gain muscle? Or lose fat? You can't really do both at the same time.

I am assuming that you wish to lose fat and gain muscle. If so you need to choose which you want to work on first and build your diet based around that goal.

Do you have any idea of your bodyfat percentage? If it is much above 15% I would recommend you concentrate on dropping your fat levels first then start bulking to gain some more muscle. Unless of course you are one of those who just wants to be huge, in which case just bulk, bulk and bulk... But be warned that you will gain some fat while gaining muscle.

Well my aim is to get myself in shape and I have made special effort not to mention the t word :p But I want to get rid of the belly which is actuall going then start to get definition. So to answer your question, both :D But it's ok if I can't do both at the same time.

My BF at last measurement was 22.5% so I need to get that down. As I mentioned in the arms thread, i'm doing a mixture of cardio and weights.

Hope this makes sense.

YAY ! :D

I did something a little silly tonight :/ I purchased a drink from the bistro in the gym which was ( unbeknown to me ) pumped full off caffiene

If I drink too much caffiene or get any sort of buzz off things I get really dizzy and sick :(

I managed to halfway through pump before I had to call it a day ... still feeling a bit dizzy and sick now .. *bad drink* !!!
