OcUK Dieters Progress Thread

Monday morning weigh in:

1lb gain from 2 weeks ago. I'm actually not too worried, because I was on holiday the week before last, and was pretty knackered last week so I didn't bother much with exercise.

I'd actually put on 2lbs when I got back. Then I lost it again, and now I've put 1lb back on. So you're not the only one who's all over the place Piggy, hehe. However, I also ate half a tub of Ben & Jerrys Chocolate Brownie, so this could have something to do with it. It was the low fat yoghurt one, but that still had 170kcal & 4.5g fat per 100g

Went for an 18 mile cycle in Derbyshire yesterday afternoon with a couple of mates. Had an absolutely fantastic time, and we all said we'd have to do it more often. We also had a lot of fun getting the cycle rack on. I turned up 20 mins late, and it was on the car, but upsidown and the clips were facing the wrong way :D I took my Mum's new bike because my old one is 11 years old and the gears have had it. I lead all the way and kept being told to slow down, although my friends *think* they're much fitter than me (they're the "sporty" kind etc) Really want to get myself a bike now. Mum's was only £85, and it's fantastic!! I can't afford it this month, but I might get one next month. In the meantime, I need to dig out my old cycle helmet and do some cycling in the roads.

Anyway, I'm back on the wagon this week. Gym at least thrice, plus body pump on saturday. I'm over halfway there... I CAN do this!

Over 2/3 of the people who started the weight loss thing at work have now given up

No change for me at all weight wise, think I have lost some body fat and exchanged for muscle mass, since I was pushibng the ol' free weights hard last week, so I'm well happy :D

2lb back on this week. But never mind...I've eaten enough food this weekend to feed an army, plus I've hit the gym hard all last week and I can see/feel a difference so it's not all bad. I was also more or less housebound during the days last week due to poorly kids, they're back to school today so I can get back into my normal routine. I feel yucky though, I've had some fluey chesty thing lurking for weeks and it keeps threatening to make a proper appearance, today it's making a decent effort :(

Nice one Kate - whereabouts did you go? Anywhere near the Tissington or Dovedale trails by any chance?

If you're planning on most of your riding being on tarmac it's well worth getting some road tyres on the bike - it's surprising how much difference they make. Speaking of which, I think it's safe to put my road tyres back on now.
And if you're planning on getting a lot of use out of your bike, it's a good idea to get something better than the cheapest available - you'll enjoy it more, which means you'll be wanting to get out on it more and thus gain more from it. Plus the bits 'n' pieces its assembled from will be better quality as well.

Here's a suggestion you might like to consider.

Went to the gym twice last week, went out on saturday night, only spent £40 so I didnt drink that much. Going to the gym tomorrow. 16 weeks till i go to Magaluf :p

Sorry mate - I must've been a bad influence... cake is evil!! :D

My weigh in is tomorrow, thats if I make it to the gym, feel really sick today, feel even sicker if I eat anything :( we'll see.

Well done Piggy - and the rest! ;)

Ok slight slip and a small gain of 2lb but this was after the Edinburgh meet and the mega bison burger/various other foods. My legs etc are looking a bit more toned after all the walking we did over the 2 days, so parts of me getting there.

Once the ankle heals up a bit from a slight strain, sustained sometime on Saturday, the rowing machine, weights and walking each day will begin if the Scottish weather is kind :p.

Did have a look at mountain bikes today to price them, as considering adding this in to take advantage of the coastal path nearby in better weather.

I am not giving up this time with the diet, exercise etc as want this weight off.

We went to a place called Waterhouses, and biked along the Manifold Track. Quite a gentle breaking in, and a really enjoyable ride. I think the Tissington Trail (or part of it) will be our next attempt. I also bought "50 Walks in Derbyshire" from the book club today. I love walking. It's just trying to persuade others to dust their walking boots off and come along with me that's the problem. I'm currently trying to persuade them into going to Snowdonia for a weekend of mountain walking. I'm getting there ;)

Thanks for all the advice on bikes too :) However, I really don't want to start chucking money at this. New tyres + more expensive bike is going to mount up, and I just can't afford it. I really do want a cheap (but alright) bike for the odd day of cycling at a weekend, and maybe riding to work on nice days in the summer. I go to the gym regularly, so this won't be my main source of exercise. Just something extra. Plus, I need to replace my old, knackered mountain bike sooner or later.

Apart from the disc brakes, how is the suggested bike different/better than my Mum's? - PIC. I've been told that disc brakes will just cost more to fix, and aren't really necessary for recreational use. Mum's has 18 gears with the gearshift on the handlebars, and the suspension is just about right. It's fairly light, and has a massive, comfy seat to stop me from getting too much bum ache. I was very impressed with it. It's 100x better than my old bike.

[EDIT] Just found the specs for it here. Mum's was £89.99, mine would be £79.99 because I need a 20" frame, and that's cheaper for some reason :)

more stuff ;)
Yup, given your intended use that should do you fine Kate :) Aluminium frames are really light if you need to carry it or lift it anywhere though.
Stoke has a lot of towpaths, old railway lines and cycle paths that I tend to use because they're more direct, safer and nicer to use than roads, I find it nice to take the shortcuts that I'd take on foot but a bit faster and without getting my feet wet. :) And I can outbrake cars with my V-brakes, but I want a disc on my next one because that doesn't get mud all over the brake when you go through a wet patch.

I know Waterhouses! We all used to go for a ride out around there, Butterton, Ecton, Manifold, Ilam and Dovedale every sunny weekend!

What gym are you going to out of curiosity?

God I feel like poo:(

I can't do this - I can't lose weight, I can't stay motivated, yet I can't pretend that I'm happy like I am.

I hate exercise, I hate the gym and I hate myself. And I hate myself even more because I have no will power to make myself go. I always aim for 3-4 visits a week and normally end up doing 2.

I know Mic loves me as I am, but I can't even stand the sight of myself in the shower or in a mirror

I just want to curl up and hide forever
