*** Oculus Quest 2 Owners Thread ***

Ok, that makes things a bit clearer, I didn't realise you could stream directly from a laptop to the Quest. Thanks for the help :)

It's not really direct, it'll be done over your wifi. Though I presume if you can setup a wifi hotspot on your laptop, you could do it directly.

Any point in going quest to quest 2 as they're 20 quid off atm?

IPD 69. No facebook account.
Mostly pcvr over link.
Blacks are important as playing a lot of elite.
Currently running 3xxx x 2500ish, 72hz and 500 bit rate on a 3090.
Screen door isn't a concern. Clarity on distant objects is.

Thanks

It's up to you really.

You'd be surprised how big a difference lack of screen door makes. You can read text much, much easier, and distant objects are easier to resolve - that's very important in Elite.
You do lose pure blacks, but in elite, with all the displays there's enough contrast to make it bearable. I've played hundreds of hours of Elite on the Index, which has similar black levels.

The main thing though is the Quest 2 is the current model, and is getting all the updates to make it better. It can handle higher refresh rates and better link quality.

If you want to go PC wireless, it can handle Wifi 6 for a better connection.

It's also more comfortable than the Quest 1, and the Touch controllers are massively better - more ergonomic and the battery life is insane.

Quest 1 is more comfortable

unless you find a good replacement headstrap
which im struggling with
but the pro headmount is looking good atm

Thanks for the feedback guys.
With some vouchers I had kicking about and signing up for a credit card I'll never use it cost me 236. So worth a punt.
I'll use one on the big pc upstairs for pcvr seated stuff and one on the downstairs pc for less taxing pcvr stuff that needs more space or native stuff.
I'll post my thoughts when I've had a fiddle.

So I've had a couple of hours to play.

Tried elite, skyrim and pcars2. The near distance doesn't look much different but I was running a lot of super sampling on the quest one. The ability to resolve objects in the distance on the quest 2 is much, much better. More so than I expected. Colours seem fine, controllers are more comfortable and the refresh rate bump is nice. Didn't notice any comfort issues, it feels like an oculus go and that never bothered me.

Now the downside. It's much more cramped in there especially with the prescription inserts in. Also on ipd setting three you can see the edges of something, maybe the screen. It's jarring at first but I noticed it less after gaming for a while. Might try with the spacer in and see what happens.

All in all though, I'm pleased with it.

Hey all, So what is the best way to go about clarity and image quality before Jan I was using the ODT exclusively, now I have maxed the render res in Oculus software (90hz), bitrate of 500, and low distortion curve. would Supersampling use the ODT on top of the oculus software to gain extra clarity? (assuming my pc could handle it), From what I've read there are zero benefits to manually playing with the encode rate now?

for context, I mainly play Iracing with a 3080/5800x

Quick question. Are the native games stored on your PC if you uninstall them from the Quest? ie you don't need to download them again if when you want to re-install?

New Quest 2 owner here and I would describe my experience as "mixed" so far.

Better resolution than the CV1 and the freedom of using it without wires to run native Quest apps is great. The CV1 has better colour and sound and with the controllers just feels a higher quality piece of kit. However the real issues are in getting the Quest 2 to work with my PC, on which I have a bunch of VR games. I followed all the instructions but for the first 2 days could not get Virtual Desktop to successfully launch any games without them then hanging with a black screen. Then on the third day for no apparent reason it suddenly started working, although there are still some games that won't start. I managed to get Oculus Link working through a short USB C cable that came with my phone. Bought a cable to do the job properly "Siwket Oculus Quest 2 Link Cable 3M, USB 3.0 to USB C Cable Braided 90 Degree QC 3.0 Fast Charging & 5Gbps Data Sync for Oculus Quest /2, Virtual Reality Headset" however despite trying all every USB 3 socket on my PC it will not work and the Oculus cable test won't even run on it.

Current Rift CV1 user here.

Admittingly I have not paid attention at all to the Quest 2 so is this a significant visual upgrade? I was going to get the Reverb 2 but realised I have run out of DP's on my graphics card because I run 3 screens for sim racing but this Quest 2 looks like it could be an option for me

Currently running a 3070 with a 5800x cpu

In a word, yes.

The Quest image is sharper with less screen door. The CV1 image has better colour and contrast and is a wider FOV. It isn't all in favour of the Quest 2, but (assuming I can resolve the issues in accessing my library of PC VR games) I don't foresee myself going back to the CV1.

however despite trying all every USB 3 socket on my PC it will not work and the Oculus cable test won't even run on it.

I've tried three cables with a quest and quest 2 on two pcs with three different gpus. I believe your chances of success depend on cable length and power supplied by the usb port. The quest is easier to run than the quest 2 but the quest 2 kicks it in the nuddies in terms of clarity.

Anker powerline 2m usb a to c worked fine on front panel on both pcs but only long enough for seated stuff. Charges quest 2 when not in use, drains slowly while playing.

Anker powerline 3m usb a to c is flakey on old z97 board and marginal on some ports on z490 board.

Official link usb c to c cable plays fine on z490 board but won't charge even in standby mode. It charged the quest fine. Plugged into the virtualink port on a 2080ti strix it plays fine and charges the headset while playing.

As far as I can tell motherboard usb ports tend to be 4.5w or 7.5w, usb c should be 15w but mine definitely isn't. The port on a 20 series gpu should be 15 - 27w, though not all are. I believe the stand alone q2 charger is 10w.

Other options are usb c pcie cards that take internal sata power, external powered hubs or perhaps active extender cables. It's a minefield. I'd hit oculus support up and see if they have a list of recomended parts.

So I just noticed that enabling multi user support sucks away some storage. With 3 users, the two additional users suck up about 4gb each of storage just for system stuff. So thats a total of 19gb of 64gb gone to the OS. I had to delete some apps today for the first time to make way for new ones. Regret not getting the larger storage now.
