*** Oculus Quest 2 Owners Thread ***

Quest 2 arrives tomorrow :D

Virtual desktop, apart from buying it is there any sort of setup I need to do?
There's a whole thread on that. :D

I left it on defaults pretty much, and it seemed to work fine. Until I noticed the latency. Waiving hand around it quickly went out of sync with my movements. But it wasn't initially noticeable, but the whole time I used VD I felt off, slightly sick. I decided that I was much more comfortable with the cable. That said, if you have a Wifi6 setup you'll have a better experience than I had. You need to install a VD streaming client (available from their website).

Honestly, if it's not a native quest app, I rarely play it these days. I suppose partly because the PC is really my sons, and partly because I can't be bothered. Native Quest apps are so convenient. Steam VR can be hit or miss to get running.

got ya! Yeah I saw that but from what I read it more about people sorting out their performance in that thread. I did a search on youtube but those vids were about 3 months old and couldnt find anything newer. Most of my VR games are on steam but it seems using the link there is no issues I just would like to play Halflife Alex and subnautica wireless. Anyway can't wait to get this setup.

Yeah. I have a bunch on Steam too. Bought them when I preordered the G2 when various sales came along. Then the G2 arrived and I sent it back and bought the Q2 instead. I kick myself all the time that I didn’t wait and buy them all as native Q2 games. :(

New Quest 2 owner here and I would describe my experience as "mixed" so far.

Better resolution than the CV1 and the freedom of using it without wires to run native Quest apps is great. The CV1 has better colour and sound and with the controllers just feels a higher quality piece of kit. However the real issues are in getting the Quest 2 to work with my PC, on which I have a bunch of VR games. I followed all the instructions but for the first 2 days could not get Virtual Desktop to successfully launch any games without them then hanging with a black screen. Then on the third day for no apparent reason it suddenly started working, although there are still some games that won't start. I managed to get Oculus Link working through a short USB C cable that came with my phone. Bought a cable to do the job properly "Siwket Oculus Quest 2 Link Cable 3M, USB 3.0 to USB C Cable Braided 90 Degree QC 3.0 Fast Charging & 5Gbps Data Sync for Oculus Quest /2, Virtual Reality Headset" however despite trying all every USB 3 socket on my PC it will not work and the Oculus cable test won't even run on it.

Are you getting a good signal back to your Router? I know you are a couple of rooms away. When you start Virtual Desktop what speed are you getting at the top of the screen and what is the speed of your Router? What's the latency on the desktop?

As for your Oculus Link problems, it's probably a faulty cable. If it worked through a different USB cable then that would imply that the Swiket cable is the problem.

And I am just after realising your post is a few days old. Have you got this sorted already?

There have been people who've had seemingly defective USB C connections in the headset though, using a different headset gave a much better connection than using their one. Generally though, I'd look to your motherboard and cables first.

No joy with the USB cable as yet. I'm cogitating whether to just return it, order another one first to test alongside it, or instead try some sort of WiFi extender solution to get the 5Ghz signal to my PC. I would have ordered the Anker cable that people generally recommend in the first place, however it seemed to make sense to get one with a right angle connector.

Virtual Desktop itself seems to work well when I am fairly close to the router, although as I am then away from the PC it can be a pain if you need to intervene on the PC because a game won't launch, hangs or needs you to give input via the keyboard. I suppose part of this is understanding which VR games (particularly in my Steam collection) will work in this fashion with the Quest 2. For some reason the original Robo Recall does not want to run, but as Oculus seems to allow the "Unplugged" version to be downloaded for free if you own the original, that was an effective work around.

When I connect the new USB C cable it charges the Quest 2 headset, will transfer data and Oculus Link shows as being available, but it does not work. The only time Oculus Link has worked for me is over the short USB C cable that came with my phone, although that wasn't great. The CV1 demanded a lot of USB 3 sockets and I had to add a PCIE USB 3.0 card for the sensors. But despite now having loads of them (2 direct into the motherboard, 2 on front panel extension and 4 on the PCIE card) I can't get the (supposedly high spec VR friendly) new cable to run Oculus Rift with any of them. My default for testing is to use a socket on the back direct into the motherboard with nothing else connected to USB 3.

Well, I would return the USB cable, it's obviously faulty. If you are getting a different one, try this. Look for Kiwi Design link cable, 16 feet for Oculus Quest 2 in the forest store.

I can't remember, but is your PC connected wirelessly back to the Router or is it wired? IF it's wired, then, the easiest solution would be a cheap router. An AC one with gigabit ethernet ports would be fine.

It would still be helpful to see what your Virtual desktop latency and connection speeds are.

That face tracker looks great. I'll be tempted to get one for my Index when 3D printed mounts become available. On the Index you could even have a custom face plate designed to mount it.

The PC is wired to the router. When near the router the Quest 2 connects to 5Ghz at 855 (I think - it's that or a number close to it).

I don't have the space to dance about where the PC is, hence why I was thinking of using USB/Oculus Link when at the PC and Virtual Desktop when near the router but away from the PC. Would adding a USB WiFi adapter be a viable solution for usage in the same room as the PC? A quick search throws up the following example for £11.99: FlyRay Wifi Adapter–1300M Wifi Dongle High Speed Dual Band (5G/Max 867Mbps & 2.4G/Max 400Mbps) Wireless USB Network Adapter for Desktop/Laptop/Tablet/PC

My memory sucks, I had to go back and look up your previous post with the specs of your PC and your router. So, the BT hub can't split the bands. The 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz are the same SSID. That means it's not possible to keep the 5Ghz free for the Quest 2. It also means that the Quest 2, at times, might be connecting to the 2.4Ghz network, especially when you are in your room with the PC.

Using the Quest 2 in the same room as the Router is a much better idea. And if you will be playing mainly sit down games in PC room, then the link cable would be fine.

What Latency are you getting when you start Virtual desktop when you are in the same room as the router? You can see that by opening up the desktop streamer app. Also in the Virtual desktop settings, enable performance overlay. And start a game and see what latency you are getting.

About the Wifi Adpater/dongle you have suggested. It's really YMMV. Windows 10 doesn't do hotspots very well. The Virtual Desktop developer doesn't recommend them.

At the moment Virtual Desktop doesn't really work in the same room as the PC as the 5GHz signal isn't strong enough.

I understand that, I am looking for what your latency is when you are in the same room as the router. You don't need to be at your PC to see the Latency figures. Just open the streamer in Virtual desktop to see the Latency on the desktop. Enable performance overlay to see the latency in games :)

Sorry I don't get the reference. Do you mean Whelk Erm to the O.A. sis.

Virtual Desktop Streamer says Latency 14 ms (Desktop)
