Though I think we should have another poll (or sweepstake) about how long people think it will take for the Rift vs Vive debate to reach the depths of AMD vs Nvidia...

Got a DK1 and as a chronic migraine sufferer it was a complete disaster. As a result I'm a little wary until I've tried one in person.

My plan is to wait and see. I want to know when gen 2 versions are likely to come out because I'm expecting they will have 4k+ resolutions and hence clear vision.

If I was to go for CV1 Vive or Rift it will be end of the year. I'd need to buy a new machine, so would want the one of next gen graphics cards due out this year. Also, having read through the games supporting VR initially nothing really excited me.

I really like the idea of a Rome Total War type game played in VR, or maybe Sins of a Solar Empire. Is there any sign of that sort of game being supported?

Quite interesting to hear. I suffer massively from motion sickness in 3d games so I assumed I would be made incredibly ill by the OR but strangely it was fine in my (admittedly short) try. Some games make me feel ill within a few minutes though so I think I've got a good measure of what will affect me. Hopefully it means I'll be able to enjoy VR without a vomit bucket on standby.

Can't say I'm too excited about all the VR stuff, but watching all the recent reviews has perked my interest. But I'll be waiting for a price drop and more game support.

I wouldn't put my issue down as motion sickness (although I could be wrong), but my head felt like it had been put through a mincer for a week after each attempt to use it, to the point where I was really struggling at work. It is a while ago now, but I have a feeling I also suffered with extremely strange and fragmented dreams for a few days as well. Can't risk a heavy investment if it is going to bring on migraines.

Watched a few more opinion videos of people who have tested back-to-back between Rift and Vive from CES last night.

I think it's pretty much agreed that the Vive has the best tech, although I'm interested to see if things level out later this year when the Oculus also has Touch and the potential for room-scale VR (Oculus have said the system supports more than one camera) as other than that, Oculus seems better in terms of IQ.

The overwhelming thing though which still makes me think we aren't ready for room-scale in the home, is that in every Vive demo there was someone following the user around holding the cables. If they weren't there, it would be a disaster, Chaperone mode and front camera or not.

If people don't invest in a method of suspending cables from the ceiling, which will be a very small percentage even amongst early adopters, I just don't see it working until we get a wireless solution between PC and headset, or like the Gear VR, everything can be contained in the headset itself.

As good as the Vive is, I don't think we are ready for it's advantages yet, and the Rift will be the better "entry to VR" solution for this round anyway.

The Vive cable isn't too chunky, you could probably get away with some kind of ring to pass it through, depends what kind of game you're playing. If you're playing any game where you need to walk around the full space and turn round, then you absolutely need someone else to have the fun job of holding a cable while you flail your arms around.

I think it''ll also be an issue finding the space in your house for the room-scale VR to be usable, which is why I am more than happy with the Rift being the better sit down experience with higher IQ. Only space I could find in my house would be converting the guest bedroom and removing the bed, which I won't do, so I'll just stick with a sit-down experience in my home office. Maybe if I buy a house, I'll get some extra rooms just for VR lol.

Yep, Preordered the minute they opened the site

My expectations on price was around £1,000 considering the Sony HMZ-T3 launched well over that. My jaw hit the floor when they said it would be £500.

The new build planned for this summer will consist of a pair of 980s and just deciding at the minute if I should build an x99 rig

There is a bedroom next to the office which I am debating at knocking the joining wall down and having one big man cave

I have pre-ordered the Rift although if the Vive is priced within £150 of the Rift I will switch orders to that instead as I have no doubt in my mind that the Oculus Touch will cost at least £100 or more.

Thats what I've done too. Pre-ordered the rift, and if the vive comes in close, I'll swap to that instead.

The vive may well support room scale VR, it also supports sit down VR.

This is exactly the same situation as the Rift.

Both support room scale and both support seated experiences.

the Oculus normally only comes with 1 camera though doesn't it? So you would need an extra camera for the rift, and the touch controllers are also extra

it will certainly be interesting to see the price on the vive - if they are close on price the vive may end up being the better buy considering what you get in the box compared with the rift

I've got a day one pre-order on the rift but I might consider switching depending on what happens

I am not sure if going SLI for a VR rig is a great idea. I know that a multi-gpu solution will be developed but from what I read, at present it introduces latency which is not what you want from VR. You would maybe be better placed to get a 980Ti, which can be competitive with 980SLI and then upgrade to high end Pascal in 6-12 months when it launches.

Will wait and see. I thought I would love my 3d monitor but hardly used it, only for the initial novelty.
Don't want the same to happen for this piece of kit.

^^^ The Crossfire/SLI GPU solutions on the table from AMD and Nvidia avoid the increased latency issue. However they do need specific developer support and how many will go to the trouble of this rather than catering to the lowest common denominator remains to be seen.

I've got 780's at the moment so keen to see what 14nm brings us in terms of top end GPU's as at this point in time a 980ti would be something of a side grade.

First of all, I feel obligated any time I defend the Rift to say that I have every intention of buying the Vive myself (in addition to my pre-order of the Rift) - but no, one camera is good enough for room scale IF you're not using controllers.

The DK2 can actually be used for room scale stuff at the moment. The one problem is occlusion from the tacking camera when you turn your back to it. The consumer version of Rift headset has tracking IR LED's on the back of the headset so that single camera tracking is more robust, even if you were just seated.

The problem arises when you add in controllers to the mix. Room scale is just as possible but obviously, with just one camera, when you turned your back to the camera although the system could track your head it's likely it wouldn't be able to see your hands.

It's also been well covered that the Oculus Touch controllers are coming with an additional camera (https://www.oculus.com/en-us/touch/ - http://i.imgur.com/ALhIAoW.png) to ensure this isn't a problem. As you can see from the video I linked previously, with two cameras, it's just as capable as the Vive.

So yes, the Rift headset is £500 and I imagine the touch controllers will be in the £200 to £300 range (including additional camera) - but what's also very likely is that the Vive headset (and controllers) will also be £800 (although that's pure speculation regarding the price)

EDIT: Also, FYI, room scale without hand tracking can also be fun and isn't limited to just walking around a room. Plenty of experiences for the rift are out there that rely on simply gazing at objects to interact with them and using the same mechanic in room scale works just as well.

I'm waiting for the release then I will see which is best and whether there is the game support to justify buying one.
