OCZ VERTEX 2E FIRMWARE 1.28 + GUIDE

Latest version of OCZ's Toolbox can now update the firmware even if your OS is resident on the drive.

Was not going to bother updating myself until I re-build later in the year, but I thought "I'll give it a try". Took all of 30 seconds to download the Toolbox and update. PC shuts down, you restart PC, Windows installs some new drivers and then asks you to re-boot. Job done.

Just run ATTO and results pretty near identical to when I originally installed Windows 7 a couple of months back.

I wouldn't recommend you do this. Running the update tool from within Linux (Partition Magic) is much safer than from within Windows.

Not aware that anyone has yet had a "real" problem from updating the firmware using the latest version of the Toolbox! I certainly have not. Decent sized thread in the OCZ forums and not a problem reported yet. Even if I did, I always take a backup of the drive using Acronis True Image.

I see your point mikeo but it's like that Asus tool that can update your BIOS whilst Windows is running... If it work's then great but should it go wrong then your in serious trouble. Performing a firmware update on a live OS drive is a bad idea. It might work but as many of the other guys will say it's a chance you take. Besides I quite like the Geek element of using Linux to do it :p

Yep... I hear where you are coming from (God I hate that expression).

I usually bang on about not bothering updating firmware unless you have a necessity (IE. problem to solve etc.) and hear I go breaking my own mantra. That's life....

I never update firmware usually having seen engineers brick customers print servers and printers through updating firmware (I work for Hp), however the 1.32 release for these Vertex drives is a big update with loads of fixes and so I gave in :) Was rather easy and only took seconds. Much safer doing it within Parted Magic as Bunyan and DragonQ will confirm (good bunch of lads) :)

Sorted, was really easy and quick, now on version 1.32

Is it normal...... for the writes to be faster than the reads at the first part of the bench ??

Unfortunately, according to OCZ "This OCZ Toolbox does not work with Intel RST 10 series drivers" so it looks as if it will have to be 'Parted Magic' after all. :(
It'll work with those drivers if you use XP SP3 compatibility mode. Useful for secure erasing a drive when you have those drivers but, as others have indicated, using Parted Magic for the firmware update is safer. I have a complete Parted Magic USB stick ISO with the firmware updater and instructions here if you want to try this method. Just extract it to a blank FAT32 USB stick and boot from it. You might want to print or jot down the instructions first.

Agreed. My 25 years + in Computer Programming etc. has pretty much also taught me that lesson. But as you say "however the 1.32 release for these Vertex drives is a big update with loads of fixes and so I gave in ". :D

Glad everyone seems to be able to update the firmware with ease.

As for which option to go for;

-Both contain a low level element of risk.

-A live CD only runs from the memory, so in essence should be more stable, not to say that it will be 100% etc.

-If you are paranoid, make safety precautions, resetting a overclock etc whilst flashing.

-My only regard to Windows is, other applications could pop up, hard drive lock up, blue screen, anything really.
