Thanks for starting this farmerboy.

My spec is:

CPU - FX 8320 @ 4.5 GHz at 1.38V stable but throttles down on
Board - Gigabyte 990 FXA UD3 rev 3.0
RAM - G skill Ripjaws Z @ 1866MHz 9-10-9-28 1T 1.65V

Getting waterblock and CVHFZ tomorrow/thurs so will be setting up a loop and going for 5 GHz hopefully.

here were all about the red uprising against the blue devil, whatever your weapon of choice from the 83x0 range you'll find tips on how to tweak that chip into a fire breathing dragon. We have a great community of helpful guys and we all chip in as best we can to solve the teething problems of overclocking.

below is a list off members who have helped build the community and the thread and the specs of there boards, chip, voltages and ram to give newcomers a idea of whats commonly used with these chips

Farmerboy-86

Also throughout the thread you will find many tips and posts of various rig setups and what works and doesn't ;)

have fun and feel free to ask any questions and the guys and myself will be glad to help

here is what i have so far guys what you think? ideas? things to improve

9-9-9-24 @ 1468mhz for my ram. The next step up was 1830 and it wasn't stable. I'm giving it 1.6v (1.5 stock) just to make sure.

Ed. I'm running Mushkin Blackline (Frostbyte) 1600mhz 1.5v

here is what i have so far guys what you think? ideas? things to improve

A few too many variables IMO. much depends on the skill and knowledge of the forum member as well as the abilities of the board.

Board and power phases is OK but

A Simple list

Recommended boards
Marginal minimum spec boards
Not recommended boards

this could be added to or argued about much like the cool board on Top Gear.

Up to the OP really, I don't want to distract his thread, but I could edit my Post #2 to show a cool board.

if you wanna edit your post for the good the bad and the ugly of boards and mention about 4+1 to avoid that be great. :)

i will start benchmark leaderboard tomorrow night anyother boards we should have up?

Add me in

CPU - FX 8320 @ 4.9 GHz, 1.54V
Board - Asus MA990FX - 245MHz bus x20. HT/NB HT-2700MHz NB-2458
Ram - 16Gb ddr3 Kingston HyperX Genesis 1600 @ 1966MHz 11-11-11-27 1.55V,
Cooling - XSPC RS 360 Rad, EK Block, Alphacool DC-LT pump and Res

this is totally Stable. 5Ghz stable is proving difficult to master, but we'll see!

Could be LLC try ultra high on the CPU and high on NB. Up the voltage then to 1.43 or maybe a bit more. The mobo you have got should be fine, I was benching at 5GHz on an M5A99x rev 1 but not prime stable. I was on air 1.47V and getting IBT stability at 4.8GHz.

Failing prime is no biggie if it does not throttle at normal work loads.

The following is in my opinion a list of good motherboards, competent motherboards and lastly ones to avoid if you want to overclock or even run an 8350 at stock.

Good motherboards should have good VRM's, 6+2 power phases or better, overheat protection, extensive and easy to use bios controls. With adequate cooling the CPU should reach 4.8 to 5.0GHz or better

Competent motherboards should also have good VRM's, 6+2 power phases or better, overheat protection, extensive and easy to use bios controls. With adequate cooling the CPU should reach 4.5GHz or better

Motherboards to avoid should also have 6+2 power phases or better but are likely to have 4+1, underdesigned VRM spec, or they lack esential bios controls. With adequate cooling the CPU may reach 4.2GHz but could also throttle at under 4.0GHz with load.

Under construction, you can trust me content ;)
