*****Official ASUS MAXIMUS FORMULA thread*****

@ AliP, Hi and welcome to the mad house :)

what have you got your ram voltage set to and have you tried just two sticks to see if its anymore stable , the other thing i would do is run memtest
that should test your ram pretty well , also not sure about your cpu volts as i dont own a wolfdale but some else will be able to add to that im sure

find it here http://www.memtest86.com/

Hello,
This is my first post on the forum, although i've been an OCUK customer for quite some time. I wish that my first post could have been made in happier times, but I need some help, please!

I recently purchased bits for a new rig, including the Asus Maximum Formula, 4 Gig (4x1GB) Ballistix Tracer 1066Mhz, a Geforce 8800 GTS etc...
Put the machine together, fairly seemless build, all worked straight away, installed Vista Ultimate 32bit, all was fine for a couple of weeks until last weekend, when, randomly, I started seeing bsods....

All to do with memory, issues writing to ram etc. Everything is running at stock speeds, (in the bios everything is on auto apart from I upped the DRAM speed to 1066mhz from the default 800mhz). My machine now lasts anywhere between 5 minutes to an hour before something will randomly crash, followed a few seconds later by a bluescreen.

I'm literally too afraid right now to try and attempt uploading a CPU-Z type screenshot, so i'll just list a few figures:

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale
Core Voltage: 1.128v
Core Speed: 2003.8Mhz (I guess Speedstep is causing this? It's a 3ghz chip)
Bus Speed: 333mhz
Rated FSB: 1335.9Mhz
Bios Brand: American blah
Version 0907
Date: 12/14/2007
DRAM Frequency: 534.4mhz
FSB:DRAM 5:8
5.0 - 5 - 5 - 18 - 2T

For the life of me I cant get this board stable, I've tried lowering the ram speed to 800mhz, and while I think it does improve uptime, it eventually ends in a bluescreen. I tried swapping the ram around, and it seemed to make a difference for a while, but then right back to bluescreen.

I'm at the end of my teather, I'm not fussed about overclocking so much, but I just want my machine to be stable at stock speeds.

PLEASE, any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Alistair

hi, thanks..yeah i noticed you had cellshock in your sig, ...would you say they would be a better choice than using the Crucial Ballistix?.

thanks,

From my own experience of cellshock and what i read about crucial ! yes

edit: there was an issue with early programmed cellshock modules with nvidia 680 chipset motherboards some time ago where they wouldnt boot because of the default voltage (1.8v dram) on intallation but that have long since been fixed

hi thanks for the quick reply...yeah i don't really want to use the crucials now after reading about them in that link, shame tho as there good, but i've dealt with cellshocks RMA service and i think it's just as good as crucials, very fast service.

I didn't know about the the issue the cellshocks had with the 680i. I have them running in another PC on a BFG 680i with no problems at the moment with default voltage, but i guess that was just the very early versions.

thanks.

Would you recomend the Maximus Formula as a good buy for the next year or so? Even with the rumors of Asus discontinuing it and the lack of future support? I'm looking for my next MB and am temped by the Maximus now that it's affordable.
Also how does it compare to the P5E X38?
Cheers.

personally i would buy the maximus over the p5e although its basically the same board the extras that you get are well worth the £3 price difference, its as futureproof as there is at the moment although up and coming p45 with give a better Southbridge if you care to wait,
you can always flash the maximus or p5e to rampage bios if the support dries up

hi...

I just installed everything and using the cellshock ram, q6600 G0, 8800GTX and seems to be ok so far, it booted up on the first try. I just have a few problems tho..

I have 3 hard drives and i'm getting the "NTLDR is missing" error and i can only boot into windows XP by pressing the F8 key to boot from the windows drive. I know that the error means that it can't find the hard drive with the windows files to boot from. So how do i change it so that my main windows drive boots first, i checked the BIOS and i'm unsure how to do it.

Also i was just installing windows update and all of a sudden i got a clear grey bue screen...it wasen't a BSOD, just a clear coloured screen, but everything was still in the background. I think i got something similar with my old motherboard and it never came back, just wondering what it could be.

Also my CPU temp is much higher than my core temps at stock, with my other motherboard it was around the same as my cores or lower. Is that ok??...

CPU = 39C
core 1 = 33C
core 2 = 32C
core 3 = 32C
core 4 = 32C

Motherboard = 39c
NB =45C
sb =44C

Any help is much appreciated, thanks.

I wish I had seen this thread sooner as I have just received this week but not built as I am waiting for my Q9450 to arrive, an Asus Maximus Formula and 2 x Crucial Ballistix Tracer RED 4GB. Where do I stand on being able to swap this for some corsair ram or the like?

Enter your bios then go along to "boot" then choose "hard disk drives" and put whatever drive you want to boot first into the 1st position.

temps look fine , core temp is often different than bios/probe usually higher for me though

as for your sata issue , have you selected IDE under Main/sata conguration
