******* Official Football Manager 14 Thread *******

At the start of the game you obviously have the opportunity to decide upon the size of the database. I always customize it as it opens up the game as the save progresses. Once you're ten seasons in, it's great to have a bit of diversity to the regens coming through.

This could depend on who is doing the recommendation. If you're scout has 12 for PA and CA but the coach who is rating the player (when he's your player) has 5 for PA and CA then his ability to judge how good the player is is flawed. It's always a good idea to have a member of your coaching staff to have as strong PA and CA attributes regardless of their coaching ability in order to give accurate reports on your own players.

This will be it, a coach will rate the player when he is at your club

Well at the start of mine I customize it to a degree. I tend to choose the best leagues in Europe and a few others from around the world. Some nations I choose all leagues and some nations only the best. At the moment I have 83000 players and a large db. Is this the sort of thing you mean or am I missing something?

I don't think so - are you talking about the nations at the beginning (i.e. when you tick the boxed of the nations you want to include)? When you get tho choose the database, you can customize that as well.

That's a very interesting way of looking at it, I've never thought of that before. Whenever I scout a player now I always choose a specific scout, and usually my best. If I am scouting a number of players quickly I use the best scout for the first few players and then the next best scout and so on and so forth. This way you get the list of scouted players quicker. Helps when it comes to deadlines.

I didn't realise if your coaches are have bad Judging/potential it will effect how they see your players too. I might have to let my coaches go, as some of them are very cheap.

When you click on 'Report' you're able to scroll through the reports of all your staff on a particular player - their reports can sometimes differ wildly, some staff highly recommending players whereas other staff won't rate the same players very highly. Your coaches with the strongest PA/CA will be able to report more accurately on a player - typically your GK coach and fitness coaches will be rubbish at giving reports on players.

Once you've selected your leagues, the next screen allows you to select a small, medium or large database. It also gives you an 'advanced' option. Click on that advanced option and you can tailor the database.

Oh wow I've never seen that before.. lol.. So how many leagues do you specify initially? If I select too many my game runs like a dog. But I think it's important to have the largest choice initially with the option to scale it down afterwards.

I only have one nation open (England, Skrill N/S) and then I can add leagues later on if I want to manager abroad - which I rarely do. So 1 nation open, I then select a large database which is customized to include:

- All players from top division clubs and all players with national reputation from Europe, South America and Africa
- All players from top division clubs in South Korea, Australia, China, Japan, UK & Ireland, Central America and USA

This sets it at about 88,000 players, but as the other leagues aren't open, the game doesn't run too slowly. Admittedly, it's only on 1 star out of 5 for the computer rating/speed, but it doesn't have to filter through every league and every result, only the English ones, so it's not actually too slow. Means that you get all the players you want but don't have to sit through loads of other leagues being played - if that makes sense!

Wowsers! I never knew that. lol... That will make a huge difference to the game for me. There seem to be a lot of options in here though.

Sorry just to add, so where you have regions/contintents divisions etc..You just edit the divisions tab..

Yeah, in the database I just try to include countries of which decent players might come from. So, having all of Europe set to include top division players/national players means that a fair amount of Croatians and Czechs will end up having an influence on how the game progresses through the development of regens. Same with places like Costa Rica or Mexico. But it does mean that I don't have a load of players from peripheral countries which will never really have an influence - mainly countries in Asia.

It essentially means that you have a 'big game' but don't have to sit through all the different leagues being played, and you can focus on your particular country/league.

I don't follow?

Sorry my bad I've never seen this before so I need a bit of spoon-feeding lol.. Okay I'm in the custom menu. So I select continent, choose continent and then click on the :-

Players from top division clubs
national rep

What about the other tick boxes? Not relevant?

Well from my understanding, and moderate experience using this, if you've selected "Players from top division clubs" and "players with national reputation" you're likely to have all the players from the top two divisions of what ever country/continent you've selected.

This is how my FM13 as set up, and I've slightly altered it this time round to exclude Asia and Oceania, but include a couple of specific countries and Central America and UK & Ireland (just in case any slipped through the net with the Europe setting.

Make sure you have the database set at "Large" at the top of the customized screen though!

Okay thanks. I've copied yours more or less. I guess this takes into account duplicates. For example, if you select Europe and then you can select England, I guess it doesn't make any difference.

So did you specify singular countries like Japan/China etc or are you just using the top tier of continents?

I think I've got top division players/national reputation players for Europe, South America and then top division players for Africa, Australia, Central America, USA, China, South Korea, Japan (although it didn't work with Japan for some reason) and UK and Ireland - came out at about 88,000 I think. By my reckoning, that selection covers all the bases I need for player diversity.

I'm sure you can tell if selecting Europe and England would change anything in the database as the amount of players in the database would change depending on if you had one ticked or both.

yep okay I'll give it a shot. I have read that Japan remains 'locked' for some reason. Might be a beta bug but I'm not sure.

Edit: With England and Scotland specified as leagues, I've got 99,000 players in my large database.
