******* Official Football Manager 14 Thread *******

(Talking about ToshJ's first defender) He's a fab purchase for £5 million. When I was top of the tree I would have to spend between £7m and £10m to get an exceptional youth, and sometimes they didn't turn out so great. But he has excellent attributes already, so a good foundation. Look at that work rate and determination. They are key to how a youth develops. Just hope he isn't injury prone!

I have started a save as unemployed, with Semi-pro experience. I got hired by Stockport county, who were relegated last season. Starting out in the Bet North league and it's a nightmare! It is so difficult I can hardly believe it lol.. Considering they start with a half decent professional status squad, I'm really up against it. At least they have a good 10,000 capacity stadium to build on. I'm not doing too bad in the finances. But I am finding this considerably more difficult than 13!

after missing out on 13 I may go for '14. How are the reviews so far then guys?

I am really enjoying it at the moment. I may be the only one judging by comments on here and at the SI forum, but I am really quite struggling to get to grips with the new tactical system at the moment. I will get there, but going from fiddling with sliders for 10 odd years, to going to solely using a shout based system is really making me think.

Haven't really found any massive bugs, a couple of smaller issues which I am sure they will resolve.

The transfer fee's seem too low at present. For years a lot of people have been moaning that transfer fee's for players are way too high, but as it stands you can pick up world class players for relatively small amounts. However, it does work the other way too, in that I struggle to shift some players for half their market value (Ashley Young - I am looking at you!!).

The default skin is bloody awful, there is a dark version out there somewhere.

The whole agent owning a % of certain players will take some getting used to.

Defenders/Goalkeepers seem very erratic at times. Sometimes goalkeepers can pull off save after save of world class keeping, only to be beaten by a tame near post effort. Defenders do still seem to dance about instead of tackling a player, so keeping clean sheets is difficult (or at least it is for me) and I have kind of resorted to the Kevin Keegan school of 'I will score more than you' football.

Having said all of that, the ME is probably the best I have seen it on release/pre-release. A bit of tweaking to the defensive side of things will see it almost perfect, imo. The UI seems cleaner and easier to use. The interaction between you and other players/managers is much better. I was able to specifically talk to Michael Laudrup about Zaha after sending him to Swansea on loan. Zaha went there as a valuable first team player, but after 2 months had only played 2 games, so was able to argue with Laudrup about broken promises!

As I said, really liking it at the moment even though I am finding it quite difficult.

Sorry if this has been asked a lot guys but im super super lazy so here goes - where's the cheapest place to get this with beta access?

Thanks in advance :)

I've spent 54 hours on the beta so far. It's pretty solid to be honest. I would definitely purchase based on the improvements I've seen so far. Have found a couple of beta bugs but these will be addressed and I have had one crash to desktop.

The match engine seems to me to have seen the biggest improvement overall. Some of the goals I've seen are hilarious! I am playing in the low leagues so massive blunders will happen. One of my defenders ran with the ball into his own net. That was comical - he just couldn't stop. I've also seen one guy handball the ball into the net. I don't recall seeing a handball at all in 13! I've had one goal happen when my goal keeper literally passed it to the other teams striker.. This chap was standing right in front of him! The range of goals are very varied compared to 13 in my opinion.

Graphics are far improved and much clearer. It's all a lot smoother than 13. It's quicker too as far as I can tell, that or more responsive. It's very polished already.

Pretty impressed I have to say.

I'm playing with the whole tactics thing. I was quite used to the sliders too. I don't know exactly how much of an effect they have on the game now - if you make a few changes they don't appear to effect your fluidity all that much which I suppose is realistic. I guess it backs up my idea that the game is still really about the best players. Let the players be creative and watch them go.

Really enjoying FM14 classic this year, so much better than last year. I'm also preferring the new tactic setup, it feels more natural than sliders. It's just a shame that GTA online has a hold of me at the moment.

When the release day patch is out, I'm sure the match engine will be even better :).

Just won Skrill prem with Cambridge with 2 games to spare to add to the FA trophy :) Don't think I've ever had such a goal filled season in any FM before some of the results were crazy breaking club/league records for match goals scored a few times.

No idea how well I'll do in L2 because half the team have contracts expiring so I'll have to completely rebuild. Hopefully the board aren't too stingy with the budget ;) did manage to get affiliated with QPR, though who have a ton of youth players to loan which will come in handy.

Well done indeed. Great result. I got Stockport into the Skrill Prem, and have had to rebuild my squad almost totally. I had a few players not want to renew contracts and jump to bigger clubs. It is really challening down in these lower leagues. Out of interest what sort of transfer/wage do you have to play with? I was given £15k a week for wages but no transfer budget. My wages were already at £10k a week, but I ditched quite a lot of my squad. I ended up with £8.5k spare by June.

It was pretty much nothing - 17k in total but I only had about 2k left to spend IIRC. I got one RM on a free and the rest used on a few contract renewals put me in the red a little. Not too fussed about that, 11 seniors and 5 u18s expiring.

Decent parent club is key down there, I got lucky with my board giving the option of QPR they have almost every position to choose from as and when I need.

Yes absolutely. Unfortunately I have not had a lot of success in that department. I had Peterborough initially and they had lousy loans, now Notts county and they aren't a great deal better although I have one midfielder who has potential. I've just applied for a new parent see if that helps. You are so lucky with QPR! I'm really struggling now lol..

General question rather than beta specific.

How can I move the SI games folder that contains all the graphics etc. My SSD is low on space so would rather have it on a different hard drive.

Cheers

The only solution I know of, is to move the Steam games folder to another disk. There might be other solutions. I've read something about linked folders, i.e. you have the files on another drive but there's a 'link' on your SSD that points to the alternative destination.

The Steam move is probably the easiest. :)

I think he means the folder within My Documents where save games and tactics etc are stored.

To move it simply copy the contents to where ever you like then go in preferences within game and in the 'saving' panel just click 'change folder', select your folder and then restart FM.
