******* Official Football Manager 14 Thread *******

It's bloody stupid AI like this that ruins the game. Nowhere in my tactics did I tell my No.2 to do what he does.

Puzzling to why that player decided not to cover the out of position CD. Instead he just ignored the ball and slotted back into his right back position.

Thats something ive always hated to a point, is that these are supposed to be professional footballers... yet in this game you have to hold their hands tactically to get them to do basic functions.

I mean every player in the game should have the basic awareness of football about them, like in this goal... any player even on a Sunday park would pick up the danger that a centre half is out of position and cover across accordingly... in FM with supposed professionals (pretending to act as their real life counterparts) they do stupid robotic stuff, like im a RB... so this is my zone and nothing more.

I think rather than having the pure basics of the game in the engine, its gone for attempting to allow everyone to create Barcelona football.

Right, time to start the season full with Spurs.

I've tried to buy Diego Costa but had a £20m offer turned down so I've now turned to Adam Campbell as one for the future.

//edit

Nothing changes. Missed Sigurdsson penalty, straight Sandro red card and a 1-2 defeat. Wonderful start.

Ha...last game of the season, I am gonna end up around about 10th-12th, nothing to play for and playing Man City away, so I thought I would try talking a load of smack to Pelligrini...and won 2-0, playing a counter-based game! being totally outplayed in terms of possession, and hitting them at the end of each half:D

He hates me now, along with pretty much every other manager!

I dont mind random results, i can take loosing 1-0 or 2-1's etc, thats quite realistic.

But in my second season with Utd, I played 8 games, of which i conceded 3 goals, scored 21 goals, won 7 of those. Next game against bournemouth and lost 3-0. They had 3 shots on target, i had 19 and didn't score one.

Theres too many of these random results for my liking in this version :(

I am sorting some transfers atm, and one of them, I made an inquiry, and the team said they wanted £8m...I thought I would test it out, and suggested £4m, and they accepted it!

Same with Andy Carroll, they wanted £7.75, but I was never gonna pay more than 3, so I offered 3 and they just accepted it without any negotiations!

Glad I am actually paying attention to negotiations, as I don't usually!

2-1 loss to West Ham and 0-0 draw with Sunderland so far. :(

I finally got Adam Campbell for £5m. I did bid for him pre-transfer window but his club didn't tell me it had been accepted. First I knew of it was when the transfer window closed and it fell through because of 'paperwork'. Anyway, got him now and he joins in January.

Not liking the game so far. As I've said, it seems more random than ever and I've no confidence that what I'm doing is having ANY effect on what happens in games.

Off to watch some FM14 videos on YouTube now to see if I can get any ideas.

I am just not seeing that many 'freaky' results. Sure, there have been some performances and results that I have not been pleased with, but in the majority of those games I can point to why I have lost, or at least not performed as well as I should:

On the main screen this defender is recorded as having 3.5 stars, but my defense coaches AND my ass. manager see him with world class potential, so it's a bit weird why this is happening.

This is sometimes because the "main screen" rating is based on whoever is at the top of the scroll down menu on the player's report page - not normally your assistant. In my save, the top rating is judged by my U18's assistant manager, who has rubbish CA/PA judging skills.

LOL. 8pts from 8 games now and I've got 1 more game to save my job.

I actually spent a few hours fine tuning tactics for each player in each position and I'm also playing them in the right positions. Playing a 4-2-3-1 formation (ball winner and deep lying playmaker in midfield).

Don't know what else to do. I've played Football Manager long enough to know that this the worst release for many a year. Truly awful. Can't quite believe I've been up til 3am playing this *****.

(And yes, I do know how to actually play the game).

Im glad to see people suffer with what I have. I was beginning to think I had lost my touch with this game but then ive seen so many posts the same as mine on fmbase (but you always get the usual moaners). Im just happy I now have company!

Hi guys those that are having issues do your squad know how to play the formation you have laid out? What's their familiarity with it? I've just loaded up a new online game with some mates in France and my team couldn't be any more clueless but I'm sure I'll get there.

As for that loss against Stoke thank god for that they are a hard team to beat I struggle to beat them every year.

Because your not winning you can't say it's flawed, it's a learning curve. You'll get their fella. I couldn't win with that formation you are playing either. Don't forget to assign players as they play not just how you want them to play

Go back to a more basic formation and tactics. I must admit I tried the 4-2-3-1 at the start of the 2nd season, and although it was winning it never gave me the control on the game that I wanted.

With a BWM in central midfield you are basically leaving 1 central midfielder. The BWM will look to close down the opposition and win the ball. His closing down will be much higher than, for example, a DLP or a CMD. With only playing 2 midfielders and 1 of them wandering off to close down the opposition players, the oponents will just pull you apart in midfield. I have found in England most teams will either play the 4-2-3-1 or a 4-1-2-2-1. In both cases if your central midfield 'goes missing' you are going to leave them massive amounts of space for the opponents to get at your defence.

Got sacked after a 2-2 draw in the Europa Cup. Only played 8 games in the Premier League as well. The 3-1 pre-season friendly win over Real Madrid seems a distant memory now. :D

Let's see how good Marcelo Bielsa is now.

Yes, I played it all pre-season and went unbeaten. Also beat Real Madrid 3-1 with the same system.

Bielsa not doing much better than me. His next 10 Premier League games ended up: LDLDLWLDWW. That included losses against Palace, Villa and Norwich. They're now 16th in the league compared to 13th when I left. :)

I honestly haven't seen any of these crazy results. Have I just been lucky? I'm Wolves and won league 1 and am now on route to winning the championship. If I dominate a game I usually always win, if I don't I lose. Haven't seen any of this 30 shots to 1 shot and losing 0-1. The league tables in my game are realistic too, in terms of who is getting promoted and Premiership positions.

I went on holiday til the end of the season to see how Spurs got on. They finished 10th in the end and seemed to improve late on under Bielsa (won 9 of last 14 PL games).

All he seemed to do was play a DM/Anchor man rather than an attacking midfielder just behind the striker. Maybe I was too open with my tactics?

I'll start a new game later on and play a bit more conservatively.

I've found that I learn three tactics, an ultra defensively formation a fine fluid formation reminiscent of Barcelona and the last is a standard tactic that my team already should know that would allow me to win games
Like the previous poster said I havent seen much about the about weird scores. Other than those games against stoke but still

I am playing a counter attacking game, 1 striker, 2 AMC's, 2 midfield wingers with one DM, and 4 at the back. Seems to work with shorter passing. But it is very inconsistent. I am still seeing way too many goals from set pieces. It is ridiculous. 90% of AI goals from free kicks and corners.
