Both won 1-0. Doh.

Oh well, love pre season, signing all the kids... :D

hehe yes that's a fun part of the game. But it also depends on your reputation. Even though I won the BPL last season I still cannot sign the best youngsters. Who wants to play for Welling anyway.. Well.. maybe, the best players in the world :D

Interesting I didn't think about the coaching aspects. So does that apply to the coaches other stats? Like attacking/defending etc. Improves players abilities quicker than normal?

Does having good mental coaches enable better coaching of attacking and defending?

Not that I'm aware of. Attacking and defending needs good level of discipline, determination, perhaps motivation and of course attacking or defending.

Here are my two first-team strikers. Both stupendously good players. The Russian was a free transfer lol.. Madness..

They are actually pretty similar aren't they having just noticed their stats. The African player is the better striker at the moment. He only cost £5.5 million too. My stadium is quite small - although it is to be expanded to 20,000 by the end of this season which will help with season tickets. I started with Welling in the Blue Bet North/South, so I've done really well with them :D

BM rejected 180m for Kroos, 2 months later they offered him to me for 22m. lulz.

I wasn't going to pay 180m but were testing what they would accept.

Loving this save at the moment! Started off at the bottom in France with no experience set now just been offered Man Utd job! They had a board takeover and it said the chairman had links with Holland so I thought what the hell why not apply and they offered me it. I only have national experience now but won dutch community shield, cup and league by a mile with NEC.

I used to find it boring taking big clubs but as it's my IRL team I'll give it a go, can't actually remember the last time I played one of the big boys in FM. Board want me to play direct football though :/ I've always played possession from the back 41221 I have no idea about direct tactics..

How would you define direct football then? I don't really understand that.

Get the ball forward as quick as possible. The opposite of what I've been doing up until now, for example I had the instructions retain possession, play out of defence and shorter passing before. I'll have to do some reading on tactics as it'd be nice to play the old fergie way anyway!

In my fourth season of the game with northampton town. Just got promoted to League 1 and have just received what i think is a crazy offer. I've got a 17 year old called Phil Mitchell , worth 12k, and notts forest have just offered 375k for him ... Gonna bite their hand off :-)

He must have reasonable potential. What does your back-room team think of him?

In the first or second season how much would you have to pay for Cavani and Toni Kroos and Hummels? Could you bag them for £200mil transfer fee's? Disregarding the wages because i would give them 170k.

You'd have to pay a fortune unless you manage to unsettle them and then the club will offer them to you for dirt cheap. Like I said above I tried bidding for Kroos and Bayern rejected 180m (lol) I then declared my interest in signing him and he wanted to come to me so eventually he forced Bayerns hand and the offered him for 22m.

I've started a new save with Ayr in Scottish division 1. Talk about challenging lol.. There's no denying this game is amazing when you play the lower divisions. A lot of fun providing you can find a tactic that works ;)

Interestingly I started out with a 4-4-2 as my players were best suited to these roles. I started to win the first few games then all of a sudden my winning ways went west. I lost five in a row and ended up bottom of the league. That's one of the big problems with only 10 teams in a league, it's quite easy to end up at the bottom! So once again, my wide formation was just not working. Changed back to my old faithful 4-1-2-1-2 and lo and behold I started to win again. Bizarre that I cannot win with a 4-4-2 anymore.

I know it's a cop-out but because I hadn't played the game for ages I thought I'd make it easy on myself and start with City. I didn't buy anyone but comfortably won the PL, League Cup and Europa (:D)

The next season though is ridiculous, strengthened my team with Kroos, Reus, Varane and Ter Stegen and now can't win for love no money. Getting beat at home by Everton and Villa when I didn't lose a home game last season, the game is so bizarre.

I ALWAYS say it, and always will. Narrow formations are always better on FM.

I find it depends on the level of your team compared to those you're playing. With a dominant team, a wide formation usually works quite well regardless (obviously you've got more space to move the ball around and stretch your lower-ability opposition).

With a mid to bottom-table club, a narrow formation generally works, keeps things tight and limits better teams from carving you open, making them rely on deep crosses more.

I've found defensive midfielders much, much more effective in FM14 than before. Previously, if I was playing 4-3-3, I've been happy to have 2 sitting in the middle, an attacking playmaker with 2 wingers and a advanced forward. Now, I'm having more joy bringing a guy back into DM and using 2 inside forwards with a deep-lying forward up front. With my team fighting to get into Champions League places, I don't find much difference between 4-3-3 and 4-1-2-1-2, each depending on the opposition's formation (though I find if they're especially narrow, I have to be too).

One old rule I've used forever, which goes against what many of the popular plug-and-play formations use, is when using an attacking formation, I have a deep defensive line to create more space and draw the opposition out. When I'm looking to hold on to a result or playing a bigger team, I'll have a high defensive line, tightening up the space between the defense and midfield, looking to limit their flair players a bit more.
