Asus is my no1 choice for Nvidia graphics cards now. It was EVGA for the 10 year warranty but they are sending the majority of their stock to Germany & USA. Other regions are obviously an afterthought & low priority as those 2 markets are their biggest customers so that's where they allocate most stock
This is why you do not see many EVGA 480/580 in UK recently
Asus include the 50% overclock without losing your warranty tweak but TBH I CBA with that as stock is more than enough to run almost any game @ max detail with decent FPS
Asus 480/580 really has some nice premium quality packaging which gives a good impression of their attention to detail & intent with these high end cards. You only get a Mini HDMI to full HDMI dongle & 6-8 pin PCI-E power convertor here along with the driver DVD. Asus also give you regular 10% discounts via email when you register the card with them.
Card is very basic looking but who cares its tucked away inside the case. Its actually much lighter than a stock GTX480 weight wise & pretty much the same size as GTX260-216 (my old card fits snuggly into the same box space!)
This is my old Asus GTX480 with Gelid HSF. 100% Silent at all times @ all loads
Its going in my Secondary rig which is attached to a 40" HDTV. If only Nvidia had not panicked & put the stock afterthought HSF on the GTX480 its rep would be stellar as the Gelid makes it 100% silent & cool to touch vs the stock HSF will burn your skin off in an instant
CBA to reinstall any benchmarking software as uninstalled & deleted all of it recently so will talk about real world performance as that's more important.
Noise wise its 100% silent so far after running several demanding games for a few hours fan speed ramps up to 60% but thats 100% silent (I sit 2ft from my PC on my desk so can tell how noisy very quickly
).
The card backplate gets very hot though where it exhausts air out the back of the case so be careful touching that its heats up quickly.
Gaming wise I tried the following all @ 1920x1200 with max everything on the graphical settings including X32AA where possible as well as max AA settings in the NV control panel like X8 Super Sample Transparency AA + very High PhysX where supported.
HAWX2 DX11
Metro 2033 DX11
NFS Hot Pursuit 2010
Kane & Lynch 2
Lost Planet 2 DX11
Just Cause 2 DX11
AVP 2010 DX11
Fallout 3
Fallout New Vegas
Splinter Cell 5
Batman Arkham Asylum GOTY + Very High PhysX
All these games except for Metro 2033 run super smooth @ 60FPS with no graphical stuttering whatsoever regardess of onscreen action/complexity
Metro 2033 is a constant 30 FPS but does go up to 45 FPS in some scenes.
GTX480 could run most of these fine but some had to trade off AA to X16 or X8 or some other settings needing lowering. GTX580 appears to have no such trouble & fly through these games in an amazing fashion
I only expected 10-15% more than GTX480 FPS wise but Nvidia were right talking about slightly greater increases as for some reason the GTX580 just feels a lot smoother so there must be a lot of other optimization going on in the 580 only drivers (262.99 WHQL) as well as the Fermi chipset.
This is defiantely one of the best cards Nvidia have ever made & as mine only cost me £400.87 I feel its good value for money
