Despite the fact that performance isn't astounding (but it is solid), it seems that Nvidia's 'investment' so to speak in the Fermi architecture has paid off now. Whilst I usually prefer ATI, this can only be a good thing as it reduce prices!

Are you guys who bought today not going to be •••••• off should the 6970 be some what better than the 580
No. I really don’t see the point once a choice is made. I’ll live with the 580 and be contented. A few fps here won’t make much difference. Better products will always come along in time and I’ll change when the time is right.

Basically what I have been saying with regards to the 580\6970/6990. I see no need for anyone with a 470\5870\6870 or better to upgrade at all other than to satisfy basic insticts and epeens.
I have always felt that nvidia SLI scales better than crossfire - & i hate ATI drivers so have just pulled the trigger on a pair of EVGA 580gtx's...
I ordered a Palit Sonic GTX 580 which runs at 835 MHz.

That Palit has sweet clocks and it's not obscenely priced either.
'Or perhaps some people just like messing around with new tech?'
Fair point.
Fair point indeed, but there is no new tech.
The cooler is new tech
