Despite the fact that performance isn't astounding (but it is solid), it seems that Nvidia's 'investment' so to speak in the Fermi architecture has paid off now. Whilst I usually prefer ATI, this can only be a good thing as it reduce prices!

Hmm, seems like a decent upgrade from a 5870, but I doubt I'll see any major gains due to my C2Q @ 3.4ghz. 
No. I really don’t see the point once a choice is made. I’ll live with the 580 and be contented. A few fps here won’t make much difference. Better products will always come along in time and I’ll change when the time is right.
Have to agree with this. You can't wait for ever - as I was told by someone today, it's a constant wheel coming round, you gotta jump on sometime!
If the 6970 is better, AMD will price it higher.
I ordered a Palit Sonic GTX 580 which runs at 835 MHz from OC before the price went up and they went out of stock. Will have it tomorrow to replace a faulty 5870. Considered a cheaper SLI setup however I use FSX and other flight sims a lot which as far as I'm aware don't benefit from or can be worse with SLI or Crossfire. I also play the usual FPS so this card should keep me going for a couple of years. I was going to wait until the 6970 but I don't think there'll be much in it performance wise and the green team seem to run flight sims better. My last 2 cards have been ATI so it's time for a change. Looking forward to opening the box tomorrow, getting it installed and trying it out.
I have always felt that nvidia SLI scales better than crossfire - & i hate ATI drivers so have just pulled the trigger on a pair of EVGA 580gtx's...
Now I might need to treat myself to a Dell U3011!! - can't seem to find many reviews of this though which puts me off a bit...

Basically what I have been saying with regards to the 580\6970. I see no need for anyone with a 470\5870\6870 or better to upgrade at all other than to satisfy basic insticts and epeens.

thats correct,and im about to buy a Palit GTX580 so I can ditch the last ATI card I own, but the price I want to pay the stores dont have stock anymore.

I'll be able to compare the previous benchmarks I did on my GTX 480 which will now be up for sale

There is new tech, granted not a lot but it is there and it all adds up to a nice boost in perfomance over a 480
The cooler is new tech
I'm pretty sure sapphire have been using it on their Vapor X cards for quite some time now.
