Did they change the 'overheat' thing? It looked very much like the guns were using a clip, unless that was special ammo types.

They've introduced reloading. You have to collect these "thermal clips" which enable the firing of a limited number of bullets before they burn out from the heat of the weapon.

Not really, Mass Effect suffered from a lack of a 'driving force' to push combat forwards, you could hide forever and just pick people off.

Mass Effect suffered from a lack of enemy AI rather than a lack of driving force. There was no reason to try and push forwards in combat because the AI would usually just run in head first and die, unfortunately the entirety of enemy AI worked on a glass cannon basis, only made worse when you were playing Insanity, they had no survival insticts at all.

While i see your point, there were other ways to address it, namely altering the cooldown rate of the overheating along with increasing how much it took. So it might take a lot more shots before you overheat but the rate at which that heat decreased was massively reduced. I just think running out of ammo and relying on completely random drops won't work in a game like ME2. I guess we'll have to wait and see... but it could just end up with the Soldier being potentially underpowered again.

I'm loving the look of cloak for the infiltrator, though I'll probably play either adept or sentinel on the initial playthrough. Just a week of exams to get through first. =/

Interesting... i don't remember them saying 'the Maker' in ME before. Guess it could be some sort of easter egg since they've been developing DA for years.

Looking really forward to this game now, never really had the chance to get into Mass Effect 1 but this is looking superb; the art direction is phenomenal.

I don't think so - they are going to have a "recap" at the start of number 2 where you make choices on what you would have done in the first game to set up the second.

It'd probably be like coming in and watching the second Star Wars film without having seen the first. It'll be perfectly fine, but you'll likely miss out on the nuances and references to the first.

This was stated to be a mistake on the part of the preview article. There's an update on the official forums that you don't get to choose the plot if you don't import a save, but you get a 'canon-esque' plot line. You do have to answer questions such as 'who are the council' but if you get it wrong you'll be told 'no, it's actually blah'.

I truly hope its better than what you've made it sound :p Specially since i can't remember what the hell happened in half my saves.

I'm wondering if some of your crew (doesn't seem like anyone but Tali and Garrus are back in your party) is still alive depending on the outcome of your previous game as random NPCs on your ship. That is, Kaidan/Ashley depending on your choice, Wrex depending on how you resolved the problem, etc.

Thing is theres probably loads of references to sidequests too, like the whole Cerberus thing, the smugglers sister, the Biotic Cult and maybe some of the random space stations might get a short mention. Would be interesting to see but i'll probably not notice half of them :p

Didn't mean to make it sound negative. If you import a save it'll list out the major decisions for you 'killed blah, saved blah etc.'. The reason why most of the ME party are not back as recruit-ble NPCs, is (and I'm paraphrasing various interviews here) because depending on how you play ME2, it may be a bloodbath where the entire team is massacred. They wanted to keep the love interests into the third game, so they need to make sure they survive the second! Decisions like with Wrex will be reflected in the sequel.

If you don't import a save I guess they go down whatever the most interesting choices are. This is speculation on my part but on the question of seeing Kaiden or Ashley in the second if you haven't imported a save I think the decision will be made on the PC's sex. The first shot of the game on the Normandy I've seen on various demos has either Ashley or Liara run up to you, who it is depending on who your love interest was in the first. Therefore if you play a female PC, I'd imagine that character running up to you is either going to be Kaiden or Liara.

P.S. the Asari in the E3 demo where the assassin Thane shows up is Nassana, who was the Asari hanging out in the bar of the first game, the one with the troublesome sister. You probably don't need to know that to enjoy the second, though it'd be a richer experience if you did. That's how I reckon it'll be if you haven't played the first.

They must have had a sort of default idea as to what path Shephard would have taken given his character, i mean they set him as an Earthborn Sole Survivor initially. It depends how many easter eggs there are, would be a bit annoying if the only way to experience them was to go through the first game again in a different way >< Though obviously they intend to use it as incentive to get the first if you haven't already.

I really dont know what class to pick to run through ME1 before 2 comes out :(

Go for Vanguard. Pistol is decent at range and the shotgun is lethal close up when you get the better guns later on - esp with sledgehammer ammo which knocks people off their feet. Plus the biotic powers come in handy for picking off charging Krogans & Geth later in the game.

Its not vital, but it'll help suck you into the atmosphere of the universe & I imagine make the 2nd game a little more enjoyable by being able to understand a bit more of what the hell is going on :)
