**Official MikroTik Hardware **

Any recommendations for a router (no wireless needed) now that I’m moving to Gigabit symmetrical WAN? It could support up to 10Gbps in the future in theory, though doubt with my home usage I could saturate that. Two people WFH, video calls etc., IP cameras and so on.

I have a Mikrotik hEX right now which would not fully utilise the 1.1Gbit connection. Wow the learning curve was challenging but what a capable and amazing bit of hardware and OS it is.

I’m still tempted by going full UniFi as I have two APs and they are great. So maybe a UDM-SE and then also into cameras and NVR etc.

I’m also open to OPNsense or Pfsense on some mini PC..!

I guess basically something that could handle more than gigabit in the future and can host VPN server, VLANs etc. the hEX actually has all the features I need I think, just not the performance.

What’s a good buy now? RB5009?

Edit: Should mention my house is Cat5e wired.

5009, 4011 would be the base levels I’d be going for. CCR if you feel spicy. Just goes against the grain spending UDM money and not having CCTV or fancy graphing.

CWWK n305 units offer an avenue for a pf or opn sense build.

If it were me I’d probably go UDM as you’re already using their kit.

Thanks, does look the the 5009 are the ones best suited.

It's a shame their APs aren't better, as I don't think I could leave the UniFi ones behind. Otherwise I'd be on MT. Running a split setup now between Mikrotik routing, a Netgear managed switch and UniFi APs can be a bit of a challenge to get all VLANS and things working together. The idea of a single place (UniFi controller) to control that is appealing, as well as NVR (have cameras now but not UniFi and the NVR solution is not great).

Mikrotik seem to have no real strategy in terms of their hardware. They'll put out 100Gb switches and 20 port 2.5Gb options but have no real switch management capabilities, and have no router with more than a single 2.5Gb port unless you want to get towards spending £600 on one and having to put SFPs in it to get the multigig copper access. It seems like their SOC partners release stuff and then they go and build a product around it and put it on the market to see who is interested.

It's been a while since they released any 'home' router devices so I expect they'll launch something with a couple of 2.5Gb interfaces on with Wi-Fi 6 and then forget about the product category for another couple of years.

RB5011 will be that product

Trying to help a friend with Mikrotik 5G Chateau he bought used. He wants to use his 5g SIM, the router detects the SIM and everything but can't get the WiFi enabled. Well it is enabled in winbox but the damn light doesn't turn on. Any advice?

I depends where you are in the update tree, have a read here.

New Wireless packages

From 7.13 we are separating the older wireless package out from routeros.npk bundle and renaming wifiwave2 package to wifi. The new wifi package is now part of the routeros.npk bundle, beginning a new and exciting era for wifi features.

We are also separating core wifi features from the drivers, reducing used space on the router. Note that upgrade will take care of the new packages automatically, you do not need to worry about anything, if you use "check for updates" feature. Technically the bundle only includes the core wifi package with capsman, so devices that don't have any wireless cards, but are only used for capsman, will not use space unnecessarily if you don't install the separately available driver packages.

Due to this, you will now see the wifi menu even on devices that don't have any wireless interfaces. The new wifi package is also now compatible with more devices than before - you can install the new wifi package even on 802.11AC devices that have the ARM CPU type.* This opens up more compatibility options with the new 802.11AX devices and even allows devices to use both wireless packages (old/integrated + new wifi package) in the same device, which means you can now use a single router to run both old and new CAPsMAN.

I couldn't log in with 192.168.88.1 so logged in with Mac address. So was on 7.1.5, when trying to update manually it gave some DNS error message. So I just drag and dropped the update.
Btw after reboot I realised the wireless option disappeared and only showed WiFi and there was no radio and master was in red. So went back to what it was on. Then I found out you have to install QCOM package. So might try updating again.

Having said that, although the SIM is detected and everything, why can't go online with it?

If all else fails try a netinstall and click the apply default config with a router release version etc to get you up and running.

Thanks I tried that yesterday but it was greyd but guess I didn't read correctly that I need to boot in etherboot mode.

Assuming it goes to factory default, is WiFi enabled by default?

I'm following this video but the device doesn't show on netinstall. Ethernet is plugged in port 1, holding reset button down and inserting power cable.

Yeah it can be a pain in the rear, make sure you run netinstall in Administrator mode. Yes port 1 unless marked otherwise.
So I would setup your pc as follows....
192.168.88.2
255.255.255.0
192.168.88.1

and the net booting
192.168.88.3

Ok this time it popped up, selected apply default and it's formatting. Hopefully WiFi works.

Thats why I said go back to the Original router install drivers, Qcom_ac is the newer driver for your device. Drivers before that wifiwave2 etc.
go back to the folder the router first accepted and move forward from there.
tbh go to the Mikrotik forum, yes they are crass, but you will get the answer you require for that device much faster. That being said are you sure the device isn't branded/locked.
