720p 16 bit colour on X34 is the future of gaming.

Should they do CPU testing at resolutions where you're GPU bottlenecked then? If you get the i5 8400 today and later on upgrade to a Volta GPU that 720p difference between the i5 8400 and R5 1600 will show up at higher resolutions.

But hey, might as well get a Celeron since at 4K in gaming it will have the same FPS as the much more expensive 8700K or 1800X :p

Sounds normal for a fullscreen application.

Shouldn't be, not for a game like league of legends; well I hope not anyhow.. never had stuttering when minimising the game with my dated ivy bridge xeon e3 1245

3.7Ghz with 1.26v seems decent. What motherboard did you get?

I got the asrock ab350m itx/Ac, great lil board by the looks of it, although asrock have agreed to send a replacement vrm heatsink (earlier models came with a blue foam spacer) which can cause overheating/throttling; not had any issues but not worthwhile risking in the long run. Hopefully it arrives in the post this week.

I was obviously joking but there is no other way to show it the difference, other than that on lower resolution. I will wait until Rezen + and see what that will bring to the table, hopefully higher clocks.

No difference yet. But it will show in future gpus. Ofc you can get the 1600 now and upgrade when zen2 comes but that's poor value for money when you can get something like the 8600k now and not have to worry about upgrading in the future.

My thoughts, don't shoot me!

i5 8400 seems to be a much better choice for gaming based on that video, it's faster than a 4Ghz R5 1600, which isn't something most R5 1600s can even reach at <1.425v.
You also don't need 3200Mhz B-die with the i5 8400, 2666Mhz DDR4 seems to suffice.
For pure gaming, yes.

AMD needs to cut prices a bit.
Eh, I don't see why. The R5 1600 is still a great all-round choice, AMD and Intel don't price parts just for gamers. A very small price drop might be in order but they can't go too far because of the 1500X anyway.

Depends on the game I guess. I always expect a slight delay when alt-tabbing to/from a fullscreen game, and a bit of lag for a second or two after restoring. Are you sure you always played in fullscreen and not borderless windowed mode?

Except you can't really get an i5-8600K now. You're also assuming that everyone upgrades their GPUs and/or CPUs every generation, that just isn't the case for the vast majority of gamers, let alone other users. If I were to get an R5 1600 now I doubt I'd upgrade it until we're towards the end of AM4's life cycle, and I probably won't get a new GPU until around then either.

Yeah this advice is for people who are looking to buy systems right now, if they can find intel CPU on shelves.
Myself Ryzen upgrade cost me £400 so not a great deal. Looking forward to next year and launches for both companies.

Yep I am sure. I have always tabbed mid game so scratching my head with that one. Not sure whether has anything to do with creators update. Will have a tinker later on and poss try borderless windowed mode.

Ryzen is fine for now still, personally I think they'll need to cut prices a bit when Coffee lake availability improves if they want to stay competitive. Applications in general also run better on the Coffee Lake chips unless we're talking about heavily threaded stuff like rendering or encryption.

In some multithreaded workloads like audio/video encoding Ryzen is let down a bit by the gimped AVX throughput, I think that's something they'll need to work on for Zen2 or Zen3, but then again that's also one of the reasons why Zen has good perf/W and takes little die space.

Either way, pricing is going down on CPUs which is nice, too bad DRAM being overpriced cancels that out.

What is the actual point of the calculator? Why should we be using it?

To try and get the best timings/speed possible out of your RAM, if you are already at a decent speed then its possibly not worth fannying around. It may help people to get the best possible results from their RAM. Cant comment too much yet as I have not tried the results out yet.
