******Official Star Citizen / Squadron 42 Thread******

What options are there these days to 'back' the game and be able to play?

I loved ED but it has no depth. I really want to try this out. But fear the development will take years. Everytime I check up on the game to see how far it's from full release. I just get "soon".

the cheapest package that gets you Arena Commander access is £35
(if you know someone already in then you get extra starting money if you use their referral code - send me a trust if you don't already have one)

Out now; Arena Commander has racing mode, free flight, a fight against the computer in waves mode, and an online multiplayer mode
There's also one first person area (no combat) you can walk around in which is gradually getting new areas added

Out Soon: A bigger free flight area (basically one solar system) with missions against the computer, PVP areas, space stations etc. to explore
Star Marine FPS game (similar to Arena Commander but for FPS)

Squadron 42 is due out in 2016 (single player campaign)

When SQ42 nears release, they are going to make it a seperate thing, so you would then have to pay extra to get the online bit as well, so backing before they do that will definitely pay you.

If you've got £35 to spare on pre-ordering a game (and getting alpha access in the process), now is definitely not a bad time to do so as there is a big content drop about to happen (before christmas I would say as their list of "blockers" is getting ever smaller), or wait for the content drop and then back when there is actually more to play with

and you don't have to get caught up in the whole "ooh expensive space ships" thing as you get in game money for playing even now, so you can then "rent" in game equipment using in game money

£35 is a bit steep. Will it indeed give me access to the full game (online and SP) next year?

As for flying, ED's was great, if a bit too... Similar amongst crafts. How does this fair up? I've got a Thrustmaster T Flight X hotas setup. It does the job pretty well for £35.

Have to say every time I look in to this I think its not for me. With all the new stuff Elite is bringing in like landings and CQC and the fact its progressing solidly so well it’s a no brainer personally for me being an original Elite player back in the 80’s. It reads a project that promises so much and will never live up to the hype. Its setting everyone up for a disappointment, but hay that just my feelings and I hope everyone that has kept this afloat and still going get a game at the end of it.

Still to lunch myself into my copy of Elite when I get a new high end rig from OC from my currant 2004 build.

You can buy from reddit if you want to save some cash.

Obviously you need to have half a brain and an idea of what you need to buy.

Yes, if you back for £35 now you get the full single player and online access.
ED was more wasn't it? It's £50 now and £40 for the first expansion?

And yes in terms of flying, the different ships have quite different flying/handling characteristics.

How things are right now, mouse is easier to play the game with so for PVP its the "only" option. For playing against the AI a stick is good fun though. I had a TFlight and actually upgraded to an X55 off the back of playing this.

I was in a similar position, I backed ED but got a bit bored of it after not too long. I wouldn't say I play SC every day now, but I check back regularly to see whats going on and the progress they are making is very encouraging.
The one thing to say about the flight model is that it's quite a bit more "realistic" than ED, so the ships do drift around and not change heading instantly like they do in ED.

Thanks guys, I'll buy at the end of the month then.

Secondly, does anyone know how the open world will work, in terms of SP or MP. I loved EVE, but it's flying... Not so much. If it's as rich as that, or even close. I'm instantly sold.

You can play the game for free with all flyable ships unlocked for the next 12 days. Just create an account and enter code CITCONFLIGHT2K15 here

I've been a happy backer for a while but I'm now almost convinced I don't think they know what they're doing. If they do pull it off it will be amazing but I wouldn't put a penny more into at the moment. You have little to gain by doing so.

Why almost convinced? What's got you worried?

The way the money is being spent. How many A-List celebs did they pay? It's nice I guess but none of it is needed. The FPS/SP aspects seem functional but nothing special so far. The flight (Arena Commander) is superb though. ED doesn't come close IMO.

Will it all gel together nicely? Eventually but not this or next year and not without more money.

I would assume that 3 hours of an actors time really isn't that costly, even the cast they have got. The money they spent might have been a large chunk. But I seriously doubt it was a big enough chunk from the budget to stump productions elsewhere.

I'll give my free time a try. I'm after a rich universe, not expansive. Just rich.

at citizen con they said 100 hrs of mo-cap,

but I really don't get when people worry about 'how much they've spent'
As most people don't know how much the typical game costs to make.

Hopefully, I'm just in an over-cynical mood. It's more than 3 hours though. Having those names attached to the marketing, credits, etc. won't come cheap. Maybe it's a genius move and people will throw enough money at them to pay for it.

when you look at being able to walk around inside a ship in first person while at the same time that ship is fighting other ships outside and you can look out through a window and see it happening... that is truly impressive tech - no one has done it before... every other game has either ships, vehicles, OR first person inside a much bigger ship, but not both at the same time

e.g. if you get in a plane or tank in Battlefield, YOU become the tank or plane, you can't walk around inside the tank while its moving and shooting etc.

the miniPU already ties it all together, they showed that this weekend and it will be in our hands very soon
