******Official Star Citizen / Squadron 42 Thread******

Payday tomorrow and I am so tempted to get the Talli again so I have the 3 brothers:

Retaliator
Vanguard
Sabre

I'd then convert the Talli to do hauling in the long run. I just love the Aegis design even though it's a bit too current times in style.

They usually do them for 10 days, Friday-Monday. Unless you're away for a couple of weeks or something? I suspect this is trying to entice people in before they split them up. It'll also be the first free-fly since 2.0, which should be of interest to plenty of people who've not yet backed.

Nah, away for a week stating tomorrow :)

Well, I think I have my small fleet nailed down:

Sabre
Vanguard warden with the two BFUKs
Banu Merchantman.
Starfarer Gemini.

I've been able to go a bit mental as I've had all my fuel expenses refunded for the last 2 months (£400) even though the place I've been going is exactly the same distance as my own office.
So I've spunked it on Internet spaceships, bosh!

I have a cargo tali, it fitted my preference for trade, was $75 cheaper than the bomber i have no use for, and its a ship i've loved since seeing it. That said, it's top of the chopping board for me.

Its too niche. For simple cargo runs a Freelance makes more sense, for small quantities a Reliant, large quantities one of the Hull's.
The cargo tali strikes me as being the high value transporter, than bank truck. Tough as nails, and heavily armed (i'd imagine 2 turrets could have eyes on a single target from any direction).

Right now its also largely useless, you need people in the turrets until NPCs are added, and its not easy spawning the large ships (best bet is EVA'ing and trying your luck on the other landing stations) and theres nothing you can do as a pilot.

I love the Aegis design, have a Gladius, tali and Reclaimer, and later on i may well CCU the MISC Starfarer to the Gemini. But the tali will be making way to end up as an Orion. I'll be looking to buy it in the PU for those specific occasions it makes sense, but i'd rather use $$$ for stuff i expect to use frequently.

It was a purchase of the heart and not the mind, if you'll forgive the melodramatic sentiment. ;) That said, so was the Reclaimer & Gladius, the intention was to wait for the tali & MM but they came along and im excited for the possibility of salvage and the Gladius is a stunning ship, fun to fly now and can be used in escort roles.

Playing VS coop with a couple of org mates earlier and missile behaviour just seems odd at times, like them missing their intended targets and coming after allies.. :D

After many months of sitting on the fence I decided to take the plunge and back the game, I just got the Mustang Alpha package for now but after a couple of hours playing around last night I was quite impressed, even at this stage in development at 1440p it looks great and ran much better than I thought it would.

I was also surprised at how well the ship handled with a mouse + keyboard, felt very natural and while I'd like to try it with a stick I can't see it being an issue if I don't get one right away.

Now to think about what I may want to do in the PU when the time comes, I was a pretty unscrupulous pirate in EvE but I don't want to go down that route in SC. Exploration in a properly fleshed out universe sounds very appealing so a 315i or if money allows a freelancer?

Although... the Vanguard is calling to me, the Mrs's can go without flowers this valentine's day can't she?!

Will go on sale at some point

I like having the gladius but I want something for trade\salvage that is all set up for actualy making money as you hit the ground running on release.

I don't want a huge salvage ship, something that can double for haulage and maybe a little salvage and exploration. I'm more impressed with how dgfightong will be such a small portion of such a big pie!

Vanguard is nice but no cargo hold, no idea why as it's flippin big for a fighter and clearly has space inside that could be used even if it was a token amount.

Honestly if I were you I'd just wait until the PU and work up to a larger ship, or steal one :p

Only problem I have with mouse/keyboard is fine control, I don't know why I just feel less in control than I do with a throttle/stick, could just be habit though.

Hm.... Yeah whatch dem thieving little #?@#-_?!,
I had two waiting near my ship. As soon as I opened the door the one on my right said hello (/wave) as I turned to him the one on my left climbed up the ladder into my ship and tookoff.
Hilarious that they do things like that and it's all in the spirit of good fun.

Even better when a small group open the door on the freelancer and pile in just before he takes off, he has no idea until he comes out of the flightdeck when confronted with a group of stowaways in his cargo hold.

All good fun

Straight in with the $350 Carrack? :D
I also think its probably best to clarify 'Will go on sale' means its not being sold now and will at some point go back to being sold. 'Sale' is a little too ambiguous and occasionally misleading if you dont know the situation. Nowt misleading about what you were saying, just best to clarify it when its someone unfamiliar with CIG's on & off approach with selling many ships.

Within the realms of somewhat reasonably priced ships, theres a few options (all prices will be 'standalone' not packages, and excluding tax)...

315P ($65) - Small solo explorer, the 300 series ships are due an overhaul to make them compliant to more recent changes and more purposeful.
Reliant SEN ($75) - Dual seater - More research orientated but should still be useful for exploration.
Mustang Beta ($40) - The VW Camper of Star Citizen. Near enough identical to the Mustang you have, except this has a living space in the back. Its intended for long journeys rather than exploration specifically.

Beyond that, you're into the $100+ ships (so £100+ after package & tax) which would be things like:
Freelancer ($110) - Decent cargo space, able to cope solo flight but probably better with 2 or 3+ people (Pilot, Gunner, + comms/radar/ship management if you wish).
Freelancer DUR ($125) - Explorer version of the Freelancer above. Slightly less cargo, but systems intended for exploration.
Cutlass ($100) - A ship best known for being popular with pirates. Not exactly exploration orientated (no more or less than the Freelancer) but another 2-3man ship for many purposes.
Carrack ($350) - Top of the line explorer. Everything you'd expect, with a price tag to match.

Whats important to highlight with EVERY single ship sold in SC is that the ship you buy is far from being close to its potential. They're all filled with stock gear, theres nothing in any of them which you'd not consider replacing. Nothing that cant be removed and role/mission orientated gear being put in its place.

To give you an idea of how drastic it is, the rough idea is that the cost of buying the ship in-game would be about 1/4 of the cost of getting it up to top-spec. The best thrusters, best shields, best powerplant, guns, role-related-hardware etc.

Also, with something like the base Freelancer vs Freelancer DUR, essentially what you'd be paying the difference for is pretty much system rack space. The DUR might be able to fit 50% more hardware, like scanning hardware. If the best items take up more space in the racks, then you might only be able to fit a decent shield and decent scanning suite, where the DUR can put the best of both in. Thats in exchange for the added cost and the loss of cargo space. Everything has a valid trade-off, but nothing is absolutely fixed in its role, only better suited to it.

There should be mid-tier ships hitting concept this year, i'd imagine they'd want to have put a decent amount of time into their large equivalents to make sure things work as expected and scale it down. No point making a smaller version and then realising both have the same issues to overcome.

That should cover Mining, Salvage, Refuelling and Repairs, i'd imagine they'll only get mid-tier options, as i cant imagine them doing 'small' versions because of whats required to do those jobs - cargo space, industrial machinery etc.

I dont know if they'd do a smaller luxury ship (we have the Constellation Phoenix for the mid-tier), or what they'd do for passenger transport (a Freelancer MAX with seating would make a nice 'bus' alternative, and possibly make a 'taxi' sized ship?). Dont think theres anything else ive missed out. Its mostly mid-tier of the larger Wave 3 ships (Reclaimer, Orion, Hull series, Carrack, 890, Starliner, Cruicible and anything else ive missed out).

The Cutlass might be an odd but decent shout, it can do cargo & basic salvage. As mentioned in the previous post, most ships should be able to do the basics of many roles, the Cutlass just happens to have the tractor beam as standard for its dubious needs.

Remember you can mine/salvage with smaller ships by fitting the appropriate equipment to them - but you need a cargo hold too.

I thought the 300 series was meant to be the small luxury ship, or perhaps that's changed now. Personally I'm quite excited about the remodel, they fly pretty well and I love the idea of them - just wasn't keen on the actual internals of the model.

You can bounty hunt in a Hull E too, not sure its wise ;)

Being able to do something, and doing it properly are very different things.
Judging by what the multiples of systems the Orion has for mining, i dont thing too many ships will be able to do it. The logistics are too complicated.

You've got to detect a decent spot to mine, remove the unwanted materials, carefully extract it so it doesnt cause wastage or create lethal explosions, then break them down into sensible sized pieces and transfer those goods into a cargo container.
Thats missiles, scanners, lasers, tractor beams, and a 'packing' system.

Im not saying you cant do it with less, but you'd be doing most of it manually, even with a Freelancer or Cutlass. You'll likely be creating more waste, finding lower grade materials, spending more time doing it, and most definitely transferring the materials to a cargo unit manually. Unless we get things which make mining & salvage possible on a small scale, which can go in & out of a cargo bay, then i doubt it'll be worthwhile to do it. Not impossible, just not worth the effort when you could make money easier doing what your ships do best/better.

The reclaimer definitely comes with something like a salvage 'trolly' so you can rock up to a wreck and get deep in there, maybe thats small enough and good enough to chunk in the boot and help... i dunno. Im not aware of anything similar for mining, but i wouldnt discount it.

Not sure about the 300s as a luxury ship, i meant something like a limo. Space Limo, Phoenix, 890 Jump. I'd say the 300s are just classy personal transport, a more spacious Archimedes or 85x. I dunno if there would be a space limo, maybe thats what the Phoenix is.

So there going to start implementing the policing systems in crusader. Thats good but it's not going to stop griefing, people will do it to get a bounty on their heads, which is fine.
I like that you will start earning at olisar ect.
It will start taking shape more towards what it's all about but it looks like Olisar is what we are stuck with for a while yet.

I don't see it as necessary tbh, Crusader is a testing ground - that needs to include griefing to a degree. Only way you can learn from it is to have it happen in-game.

I'd rather it was done now than later on!

The Vanguard is a long range fighter/bomber.

You will be able to travel beyond the range of standard fighters and fight/explore and log out safely in space because all the variants have a habitat unit in them, so the ship will despawn and then return to the same spot when you log back in.

In a single seat fighter, or a ship without a bed, the AI will attempt to pilot your ship to the nearest docking facility while you are off line. Which means if it gets jumped on its way back, you lose your insurance excess of its destroyed.
Plus your travel time out there.

So all these Hornets, Sabres, Gladius etc, are going to be limited by how far they can travel before you have to log off to sleep (or your friend takes over).
