******Official Star Citizen / Squadron 42 Thread******

Awesome PaulC2K :)

I've been mega busy/lazy and just caught up on the this thread from end of February lol

Haven't played any SC since 2.0 so will I have lots of new things to go wow at if I update to latest version??? :D

2.4 will offer the biggest change to date. tho its unlikely to be ready for PU inside of another 2 weeks.

I'm not expecting 2.4 here before July. They've promised so much in it that I'm just more and more cautious about getting excited, might get half the patch out by then I guess.

It's the eternal string them along style of leaks and promises, hope I'm wrong :)

Yeah they have made some bold promises, but they did say "Shooting for one per month" :)

2.4 is a big one, about as big as 2.0 was, a lot of important and challenging changes, no doubt they are putting a lot of hours in and working through the problems, smashing those bugs.... its coming along. Have faith :)

There is an unofficial list here that was made up of what has been said so far.

In addition I think we are likely to see another set of ship components make it into the game and possibly a hanger ready Reliant.

They have a lot to test with this one as both the game client and back end systems need thorough testing before its released to the PTU.

As others have said, 2.4 is pretty significant (2.1-2.3 hasnt added much beyond ships really, some tweaks/fixes and ships), im a little surprised that they've not given themselves more time to release it - just say this one will likely be a 2-mo job to get it implemented, they're beholden to nobody eitherway i suppose, but theres going to be that faction of the community that holds them to every word.

From what i understand, whats being added in 2.4 isnt a whole feature, but the integration of a framework to build onto, and some early examples of that. With future updates they could add big things or next to nothing, but they've kinda committed themselves to 2.4 having this framework, where normally they'd go with 'if its not ready, it doesnt get included, only release whats ready' - might not have been a great idea, but it could simply be a case of not implementing it holds up work on other aspects...

What im a little baffled about is the talk that the Gemini variant of the Starfarer will be flyable too.
- We've seen nothing of it beyond concept art
- CIG havent released/worked on a variant to hangar ready or flight ready since 2.0 cos its better to get the 1 base ship modified than making changes to 2-4 of them when problems come up or w/e.
- On a tour about 6wk ago i questioned the ship team at F42 about them apparently working on the Gemini, they were cagey about it, but it'd been said on RtV the week earlier. I was hoping maybe they'd show us a little bit of the work on that, but i didnt bother asking after '... maaaybe'.

Pretty sure the Reliant is a near-certainty too, im sure they'd said a few weeks back it was the usual 1 hangar ready, 1 flyable. I suppose the Herald isnt far off, but we've seen much more of the Reliant looking done.
After the Reliant & Herald, im not sure what else there is which is pretty close. I think the Caterpillar is probably a few months away, because of it having different modules, the big ships we wont see till mid-2017 IMO, F42's team are on SQ42 ships (capitals & Vanduul), so it could go a little quiet after the Herald. The Caterpillar could possibly be the only ship added in the 2nd half of 2016.

Thanks :D

Snip

Yes don't disagree with what your saying Paul. 2.4 will not be a massive change in terms of what a player see's or does apart from shopping, its more about the server architecture dealing with persistence and making sure that all works correctly. Its the right approach but i think its bigger for CIG than it is for the testers.

The Gemini should be doable as Foundry 42 have been working on the Starfarer for SQ42, which depending on its role in the game is possibly the Gemini variant. As we know SQ42 ships get priority which is the reason why the Starfarer like the Sabre was built out so quickly after its concept sale.

I think the Catepillar is months away. Considering they have only started working on White boxing it in the last two weeks and there are a number of systems that would need to be designed out to make the Modules work. Hopefully the Catepillar will come with the 'cargo' system too.

The Herald is closer but again having seen on ATV its still got a month or two before hanger ready.

To be honest I haven't played much in Crusader as there is not that much to do at the moment. I will check out 2.4 with the shopping system. Hopefully once they start adding profession systems into the game (Cargo, Mining, etc) it will be a lot more interesting.

Will be interesting to see whether SQ42 makes it this year. We've heard very little about it really since Citizen Con (the odd behind the scenes / interview and the odd image of the Bengal getting built out). and there is still a great deal of work, optimizing and polish to do. My feeling is Q1 2017 for SQ42 and Q2-Q3 for the first 'version' of Star Citizen.

Yeah, theres definitely more to 2.4 happening under the hood in than stuff we'll see, alpha UEC (aUEC) should make playing it a little more fun as your actions have some meaning, but its still fairly inconsequential, it doesnt suddenly transform it from something you'd play for 1-2hrs each update/month to something you'd play 1-2hrs per day... but its the seed that'll grow into something more meaningful over time, its the beginning of an economy where doing something rewards you with payment, and resources cos you money.

You could be right on the Gemini, they've always said the Starfarer was in SQ42, never heard them say the Gemini though but i suppose it makes more likely in the storyline (though theres no reason they couldnt assist/rescue a civilian ship, its not a military universe) and explain why its ignoring their rules on variants being held back.

Im still expecting SQ42 around March '17, dont know why, we really dont know enough to really say, but if you think about when we first see things like ArcCorp, multicrew, Arena Commander or Star Marine, and then how long after it is till we actually get them, what we have in 2.3 feels like its a long long way from being at the same quality of a single player game. Its easy making a demonstration knowing what not to do to avoid known issues happening, but much more complicated fixing everything so its stable for players. We saw a snippet of walking around the Idris, for SQ42, which showed us interaction and really thats it. I guess we have mission mechanics in the PU build, which may well be capable of much more impressive things than we'd know about. 2016 just felt very soon from the moment they said it. Until they show a segment more comparative to a SP game, i doubt that'll change in my mind. I hope they're right though.
