******Official Star Citizen / Squadron 42 Thread******

KS accounts for something like $5 million our if $150 million +

they also would have hit the funding goal without it but may have then went to private investors rather than continuing to find raise via their own site. Interesting that it could have worked out very differently

Im not gunna jump back into the game until 3.0 is released. its limited the game so far.

It does seem like another PCARS game though and we all know PCARS made it to retail so have faith and be patient

I think one thing I have learnt from this process of watching the game develop and watching the general community from a far, is that open development, where decisions about game features as the game develops and the subsequent delays that come with software development are not compatible with the general public and their need for instant gratification and thinking their £30-£40 (or more if they are so inclined to dump their money into it) entitles them to a game created in an unreasonable time frame with perfect deadlines.

Its probably the reason why publishers don't let developers have creative freedom and don't tell their audience about a game till its nearly finished.....they know their audience....they know how impatient, picky and skeptical they are and thus we end us with fairly safe, bland games, year after year. (bar some games from exceptional devs)

I put money into this game back in 2013 (money I dont care for at all anymore, probably spent 10 times that in Ibiza the same year on booze :P), I'm hoping the end product is something we have never seen/played before...no matter how long that takes.....all these scam calling, impatient, moaning comments are just getting boring now......if you feel that way, get a refund and off you toddle.

What is happening with Star Citizen is not normal by any standards. Even if you are a gamer or a developer or a production manager, it makes no sense from any perspective. I really don't think they can deliver what they promised. I even doubt they have a sense of what they promised and where they are at.

They will deliver something in the end and call it a day. So many controversies surrounding this project. One day people will write books about it. Anyway, that's my two cents and nothing more.

However, the amount of popcorn SC has provided to endless of neutral parties like myself is worth the 150m alone. It is a gift that keeps on giving :D The memes, the arguments, the endless bickering, Chris Roberts and Derek Smart. Somewhere among this mess lies the truth.
well they should scale it down and just release the game with ships and moon landings for now then slowly add more content. just like any MMO

More than happy to wait, if/when it does come out it is definitely going to be something special. Will say though that the obsequious fanboys are just as bad as the impatient to be honest. One or two of you have got to 'level cringeworthy' defending the game in this thread imo :)

God no, please no. Then I would want to get a refund. I hate that model of development. We didn't use to have it 10 years ago, we don't need it now for them to release Alpha. If you so wish though you could happily call 3.0 that though since that is what you have just asked for.

Personally I think they are keeping the game in a state of perpetual development just to milk people of money and sell internet spaceships....

But maybe I'm being a little too cynical?

I'd say slightly cynical, because it seems to me they have the type of fanbase that regardless of it's state when it's released they'll be able to hold the carrot of 'future ships/features' out and keep getting money.
so they don't need to artificially keep it in development

If that's the case, why have offices over the world (US, UK, Germany) full of developers, that cost a fortune to pay and offices that cost a fortune to rent and run with all that hardware, when you could have 1 small office of developers that just make ships and sell them and have a cushy life with the cash ?

willing to bet the community don't want a slimmed down game, quite the opposite.
who cares what the community think.

get the game out a stable release state with enough content to last players 6-12months and then release more planets and features each time. Job done.

Did WOW have all the content and game worlds out on release day? Nope. Infact they are still adding stuff to it.

Is that definitely the case though? Is there any proof of the number of people actively working on this game and what they are earning?

There seems to be a remarkable lack of game considering it has been in development for over 5 years now.

I'm sceptical to say the least.

Have you ever worked on a project (any sector) when you're asked to force modular scaling to a system not built or scoped for it in the beginning?
Absolute nightmare

Yes that very much is the case......there have been multiple visits to various offices by members of the press, certain backers......if that were the case, they would have been easily found out by now.

God only knows what they have been doing for the last 5 years then.

This game is turning into another Duke Nukem Forever....

Out of interest, how long do you think a very ambitious game should take to make from scratch with no engine, little to no staff and structure from day one? Considering Wow and GTA5 took about 5 years from very established companies with the manpower and infrastructure from day 1.

I don't want to sound like a defensive fanboy here..I'm certainly not, I'm just very optimistic person by nature.

And shock horror both those games increased there features and content over the years. they did not build the whole of the content u see today at release.

My actual point is this. Why dont they polish this game as is and release it now to teh public with some basic moon landing missions and exploration?!?

I know someone who works in CS at CIG. It's real and they are doing what they say they are doing.

The problem here is they are outwardly documenting and promoting every step of development which isn't currently falling in line with peoples expectations given the publicity of the funding and timescales.

Look at R* and the GTA series. They develop GTA for years and years but they do it all behind closed doors and don't leak a thing until they feel they're ready, but even then things don't quite meet expectations to gamers despite not really having a development long marketing strategy building the hype train.

What I can tell you of game development, having known people working at both devs above, is that they work long hours in a pressured environment day after day for all that time more or less, more so when it nears the going gold dates. It's insane. Game dev is a time consuming. They start in one place, evolve to another and things are revised over and over and over. They don't just turn up, design and model a 3D vehicle or object, texture it, animate it then have done with it. This process is re-done over and over more than once for each asset to make sure not only that it meets the artistic direction but also is fully optimised and efficient for use. The ideas and technology evolve over the years. You're not developing on a level playing field as things change all the time so they are constantly going back to where they started to make sure everything has continuity. Or at least, that's what should be happening.

This is an ambitious project and there wouldn't be any of this discussion if it were a normal game that wasn't so publicly developed and funded. It requires a little understanding as it doesn't fit in with the norm.

Aren't they literally about to do that very thing? 3.0 has moon landings, missions and exploration? Then they will build upon that with each patch?
