******Official Star Citizen / Squadron 42 Thread******

There's got to be a middle ground though. If they finally release it in say 10 years, then it's not going to be revolutionary, it's just going to be another game with outdated graphics and features which have been done a thousand times before.

10 years is complete hyperbole, it will be getting near complete in 2.

so are they still using bits of Cryengine? i thought there was a whole court issue abut that, either they use it and nothing else, or they get sued, etc?

Crytek claim they helped CIG get the funding they got by making videos like the original pitch and early ship commercials < great video and leased the engine to them at a discounted price in return for using Crytek logos with the game, CIG later moved to a rival Engine, namely Amazon Lumberyard and Crytek screamed foul play... the case is on going.

The reason people are saying Cryengine is still used, and it is to a limited extent, is because Lumberyard is also based off Cryengine, Crytek sold their old 3.7 or 3.8 engine to Amazon and made a new one, Cryengine 5.

#8992 says both are being used.

Deuse is asking; what is Star Citizens Engine, the answer Curlyriff gives is right, it has been continuously been built on Cryengine in one form or another, i have explained Lumberyard is their own customized variant of Cryengine, CIG have also customized it, heavily, so it is a mix of Cryengine, Lumberyard and their own.

*Snip -humbug*
So what is Star Citizen's engine?

I am still not seeing your point in honesty in the comparison.

And it is a mix of Cryengine, Lumberyard and a heck of a lot of custom code that no other engine has. So all it what you want but it isn't just Cryengine vanilla is what Humbug is getting at.

Farcry 5 in that sense is also Cryengine, given that DUNA engine is a customized version of Cryengine.

Despite what people think Cryengine gets around :) its a very good engine, it makes the most pretty games around, it has a very sophisticated Render and Shader engine. the rest of it is questionable, or was because its all improved a lot now, the core of it is what people who want to make pretty open world FPS games want out of it, its always been unbeatable at that, way ahead of its time, look at Crysis 3, it still stands up today.

The full game? (even if it's alpha/beta so subject to change/improvements)

No its still under development, this game is unique in that we have access to it 'As its being made' so what is ready to play, you can play, there is another update coming in days, as the game gets more complete more and more gets added to what you can play.

BTW there is stuff you can do, the Public Universe (Crusader) First Person Shooter (Star Marine) Battle Royal Dog Fighting, Ship Racing, Swarm Battles (Arena Commander)

My invoice in the spoiler was dated 4 years ago this October, SC had already been in development for nearly three when I bought the R290!
Considering the budget and team size, that is a staggeringly long time. 2014/early 2015 was supposed to be the release date.

Games, especially massive games like this take time to make, Skyrim took 10 years, so did a few others, 4 years and still going is nothing out of the ordinary, what is is the fact that you can play it as they are making it.

Skyrim took 4-5 years. The engine they used was the same one they used in Oblivion.
I hopping the single player game will come out by the end of this year
