******Official Star Citizen / Squadron 42 Thread******

Its been in development already for what? 4 years? Not even GTA takes that long.

talk of it not being in beta for another 2 years is comical

i dont think this game will ever be done

Most in the SC community don't care about the timescales, those that do are encouraged to get refunds. It'll be done when it's done and if it fails I've still had over a thousand hours of fun with friends on the way.

Sounds like good value to me tbh.

Squadron 42 demo/info confirmed at Christmas hopeful a sample mission and nothing too spoiler loaded!

player colony confirmed as the game changer? according to reddit it might be, not sure how is feel about that.. OCUK/PAGAN colony could be a laugh though.

small outposts on planets I guess, previously I don't think we were going to be able to have buildings other than our hangars which were basically instanced within cities and asteroids.

implementation of this week be very important though tbh. especially with small instances to begin with. wild be frustrating if not all the group you play with are visible etc

So that original pitch of releasing it in 2-3 years time was a lie?

When backers throw money at you and ask for more (which kept happening btw, it wasn't all CR expanding scope, the community was partially to blame) then the scope gets extended and extended.

Those unhappy with that have been able to get refunds and walk away, which incidentally they didn't have to offer.

The original pitch changed, so timescales changed and even now the community continues to ask for more. The difference is that CIG have stopped expanding the scope and stopped giving timescales/deadlines.

For real the community is partially to blame? People will always ask for more. You expect the mob to perform collective reasoning and say stop no more content when you have a top-notch salesman like CR pitching a dream to them? That would never happen.

Adults can't be adults? I don't buy it. This wasn't just at the pitch, CR has consistently let the community down and the community has continually asked for more, thrown money at him like a top rate hooker and he's kept dancing. The blame isn't all on him because the community is so damn keen to keep that booty moving ;) The blame is shared.

Many in the community now seem to be at the "just focus on the current scope" mood with additional stuff being later well after release, there still some who want more added though.

ED also got the basics so right with its kickass flight model, good graphics and performance and top-notch sound design.

What you have to understand is that no game will ever measure to the dream that some SC fans have in their head and no one can convince them otherwise, too bad SC will not even come remotely close to that dream.

Elite didn't live up to my exceptions, I think SC will be the same and some of that will be down to the community when/if the game ever comes out properly. I loved Elite for about 3 months then realised it was basically a grind fest with little to do, piracy was made increasingly difficult and traders etc were able to generate vast sums of money whilst watching TV. The different play styles weren't balanced at all, meaning everyone was pushed into trading, trading and trading. Still I've got my kickstarter modified cobra MK IV if I ever want to fire it back up.

There is also likely going to be some form of micro transactions like elite has for certain cosmetic stuff. Expansions will likely be the main thing as well as allowing subscribers to keep going if they want for a tiny amount of in game money each month. Subscription would only be an option though never mandatory and not allowed to offer any benefit you can't get by playing it without just like the cap on buying in game cash. All needs careful balance.

there is also the IP licencing aspect, you can get CR intends to expand this into TV or film later on, hopefully he's not a director if that's happens though.. as guilty a pleasure the wing commander movie is! it's still pants..

Is this worth getting yet?

Which pack would you get squad 42 or normal?

Is squad 42 out yet?

Is there much to do or is it just as some say a ‘tech demo’ at present.
more than a tech demo but I can't recommend anyone to back it presently. Hold off, watch the live streams etc but keep the cash in your wallet

The scope expansion is something that was fabricated by the fanbase to justify any delays. Even the 2012 kickstarter talks about building an online massive universe unlike anything seen before.

Procedural generation etc came in later, they never expected to be able to do it. That's one of the largest additional items.

They also didn't plan to have as many ships done until they realised the cash cow they could milk.

I guess procedural generation is one of those things but it only happened after they saw ED pulling it off in less than 6 months. They had to respond.

Nope they mentioned it early on before ED was even initially released but they weren't sure how much it could be used so set a team up to look into it, basically a feasibility study.

they only planned to use it to generate asteroid fields..then when they understood the tech and how it could mesh into cryengine the scope exploded.

TBH SC and ED aren't even competing for the same players. I own both, not one or the other and backed ED on day one.

Making an engine isn't easy or cheap. They actually enjoy several ex crytek staff though and own as lot of tech now which they can licence out if they want to

Seriously you think making a game based in space with localised physics grids, realistic gaseous mechanics etc can be made using off the shelf engines? This had to be created. They even hired one of Cryteks own AI programmers to work on AI as the game is way too complicated for existing have AI, you have npcs who have to get in and out of vehicles, manoeuvre them on 6DOF then get out and move around in differing levels of gravity on and off planet etc. Traditional engines are very basic building blocks

odd that I murdered Humbug whilst strolling on a planet two days ago in Star Citizen. Yes we landed on it..

shoot him in the bottom with a laser pistol, he bled out lol

as you say priorities, let's not make this a ED v SC thread there's literally no need or benefit to it

I focused on ED as I don't see the point in comparing them, both good games but it's like comparing an F1 simulator against a rally simulator. Basics might be the same but the games are entirely different

Honestly the differences are so numerous I can't be bothered to list them whilst on mobile.

They both share the same funding model as Oculus rift, doesn't mean they are compatible as VR devices.

It's like comparing FIFA 18 and John Maddens football. they represent entirely different visions and mechanics.

like the idea don't see why you'd want to own one though. Rent it from another player would make sense although someone in the org has bought one anyway.

slightly worried about your claimed area behind protected by the UEE from the wording I've seen it creates a firearm prohibition area so you can't be attacked. Care bear zone essentially.

less worried if there's other threats like local wildlife or story events.
