******Official Star Citizen / Squadron 42 Thread******

2026 is disappointing but it was a very hype inducing intro play through. They need SQ42 to be a 100% release though so I understand taking even more time. And they need the PU to be in a complete / good enough state so people play SQ42 and go straight into the PU and stay.
Hopefully by 2026 we will have nyx and castra as well as everything that has been shown in citcom so far.

Yeah I think they may actually be aiming to have SC in a 1.0 state for SQ42 release, if they released SQ42 today and people jumped into SC now, they'd be like "what is this garbage!"

There may be a bit more truth to that than you think. Imagine if SQ42 was the best game ever made, it redefined video games as we know it, afterward you wanted more and jumped into 3.24.2 right now

14 years after it was announced Squadron 42 gets a 2026 release date.

Now to anyone who thinks the rate of video game progress hasn't slowed down just consider people were playing on video games on the Atrai 2600 and Sinclair Spectrum back in 1982, fast forward 14 years i.e the development time for Squadron 42 and think of the games that were available in 1996.

I will eat my hat if we see SQ42 before the end of 2026. I just can't help feeling that the recent news was very much a social media boost, mainly to increase awareness of the current SC (and maybe boost the finances as well).

I hope I'm wrong, but given their previous timelines, I just can't see it.

Just for clarity on this.

What type of hat do you own? Will you be eating the hat raw or cooked? Just pending outcome of release date so we know what to expect of your hat eating.

SQ42 I do not expect before 2028 as CIG are a tiny indie company with only a few devs and pennies to work with.

In light of recent news, I'm guessing my hat is well and truely safe :D

Check out other triple a games. Average game development time is around 8 years

Even if they could get it out in 2025, would they really release it into a GTA 6 year? Doubt it.

Does anyone know if they talked about HDR at all for SQ42? If they don't have that then it would be a complete disgrace imo.

I think releasing in 2026 is wise, It's already only 2 months from 2025 so it's not that far away and gives them a good chunk of time to polish the hell out of it and 2025 is a big release year for a few other games which would take the spotlight off them.

In the mean time we have new ships releasing, 4.0 with server meshing and Pyro all being well coming to LIVE around December, Lots of new tech throughout the new year as well as fixes galore.

From what I've read as they are phasing out DX11, They are not going to implement HDR until they have multithreaded Vulkan in place which should be out on the PU way before SQ42 releases.

No idea what GPU the machine had that Tyrer was using for the live demo but the screen tearing was prominent so it was certainly capable of exceeding the monitors refresh rate. Performance wise the game demo looked great, visually it was stunning, it beats many movies in sheer scale and epicness and the Vanduul look awesome and have some serious Halo vibes about them.

I also think Chris may have been conservative with the possible release date, giving them plenty of leg room to finish the game.

The initial flight with Vanduul seemed of without smaller fighters from the human side. Hopefully will get fixed.

Hopefully they'll get path tracing too at some point! :D

It's always best to over estimate than to under estimate and anger the crowd.

If they find that it's ready to release next year then happy days but 2026 gives them some breathing room.

*snip*

Have you flown the Spirit, I'm interested in how they compare currently. Is the Zeus a flying brick (that looks cool)?

Crafting today and I'm looking forward to seeing how they're going to do it. I think my guess currently is reasonably basic systems with it using the bases for crafting the higher their stuff. They've already confirmed multiple item rarities for example from the sandworm. It's whether you have any control over targetting mat quality etc.

And base building has only been shown off very simply so far and it looked like Starfield, which is not great. That they showed off two orgs working together for bases yesterday is worrying for the grind for things.
