*** Official Ubiquiti Discussion Thread ***

I'm a handful of releases out on both the controller and the unit itself so am just grabbing them. I've done a factory reset as well and barely tweaked anything from default in case I'd done something stupid.

I had some problems when I used my first UAP with a 3rd party router on the network with the same SSID. I never got to the bottom of it but suspected it was dropping out when my kit was switching between the two un-necessarily. I took a punt and put a second UAP in and disabled the router's wifi and it solved all my problems. That's not necessarily the same as knowing the root cause but for me everything just worked a whole lot better. Zero hand off just happens and I don't drop a single millisecond when moving about on a VOIP call now etc.

That would be a great idea but I blagged the one I've got and really can't justify the price of another unit at the moment. I'll see how this goes after the factory reset.

I've not enabled the advanced options so this time I haven't touched settings like airtime fairness, bandsteering, load balancing etc.

I'm in the process of changing out my network kit for ubiquiti kit and so far I have a USG and a Pro and a LTE access point, next on my list is a managed switch or 2

I would like to lose the power bricks for the Access points if I can, I know the Pro AP is 48v and the LTE is 24v, so I'm looking for the Ubiquiti POE switch.

I currently have 2 netgear GS108 switches, one upstairs and one downstairs, I can combine these into one switch and put it in the loft with the rest of the kit or do I get 2 8 ports

Which switch do neeed ??

Thanks in advance

Phil G

I haven't got the advanced options enabled and I'm having zero problems with my AP-AC-LR's. I have had the occasional problem where iOS devices drop off the wireless but that's been sorted with new firmware on the AP.

YMMV of course, the RF environment at my house is likely to be quite different to yours.

Edit - I'm using the beta controller software, just updated to 5.5.6 and am still updating my kit with new firmware.

Resetting mine may have made a difference although it could have been the firmware update. I guess I'll never know.
One problem I had before was that if I switched VLC into 'sharing via WiFi' mode on my phone or iPad while they were connected to the Ubiquiti AP, I couldn't access them. I had to make sure they were connected to the Netgear.
After the reset, it's working fine, no matter whether they're connected to the Netgear or the Ubiquiti.

They release controller and firmware updates on a regular basis, always worth checking once a month or so.

I look after a fairly large site of these at work (over 300 of them).

They are an absolute dream to manage.

Just set up an Edgerouter Lite & Unifi Lite... all seems good so far; a few head scratching moments and googling to try and get upnp2 working but all seems to be great now.

All I can say is "curse the lot of you" :D

I've ordered another UniFi AP-AC-LR to go with the first one. Yes, I don't really need it but what I'm going to do is disable the wireless on the Netgear and put the second unit here in my shack. I guess part of the reason I've done this is because I set up the controller on a Pi (currently running a Pi-hole and Transmission) and it's a little frustrating only being able to see some of the wireless clients in the house.

I partly blame Amazon for this because I looked on there at about half ten this evening and I could still order for delivery tomorrow!

Putting the 2.4GHz radios on different channels will blitz the local area! Are the recommendations still to use 1, 6 and 11? With two units here, should I choose channels 1 and 11 so that there's no overlap between the two? What about 5GHz? I never used to be able to see any other networks on 5GHz but now there are a few, all overlapping right at the bottom end.

For 2.4GHz you want to keep to channels 1, 6 and 11. Choose two that suit your location, or just leave them on automatic and let them get on with it. There's no overlap between any of those three channels so it doesn't matter which two you pick (not sure where you got the 1 and 11 to avoid overlap from).

There's less of any overlap problem with 5GHz, the spacing is better and the signal is more easily blocked. Again you may as well leave them on automatic unless you've got a good reason not not. I had to force my UniFi APs to use the lower 5GHz channels because I have some devices that can't use the higher channels. If it wasn't for that they'd be on automatic.

I prefer to leave them on automatic because external factors change. Most domestic wireless networks will be on automatic for channel allocation unless someone has deliberately changed them. So you look at the channels in use today and manually set your channels to suit. If you look a day later many of the other local wireless networks will probably have jumped to different channels and your carefully chosen manual settings may no longer make any sense.

You'll be buying a USG next to make all the dials light up, then it will be like you know what I might as well go the whole hog and get a switch too.

I already fancy the USG despite only just getting an Edgerouter and being so pleased with it. I also fancy another AP even though it's completely unnecessary for my place. But, I can. The switches look ace, too.

The USG is OK, does the job but is a bit feature light. When I got mine you couldn't add a static route. That's now possible through the GUI (possibly beta GUI only) but I don't think they should release a router to the public that you can't do the basics on.

The switches are good, no complaints about them other than sometimes the controller and LEDs lie. They currently say that my Printer is connected at 1000/full but the printer only has a 100Mbit interface.
