Hi Guys,

Was out doing some shopping with my partner at the weekend in John Lewis and decided to treat myself to a new TV as my 50PK350 is getting on for 6 years old now. I looked at a few different TVs but they all paled compared to the OLED.

So we picked it up and took it home and the picture is incredible, simply beautiful. Because this was a spur of the moment purchase I have not properly researched the TV other than knowing that OLED > all from reading various reviews. My AV Receiver is an Onkyo one that came with the HT-S5305 package I got back in 2010. HTPC is based around an i5 4590 using onboard video.

I have a few questions:

1) I can only get a 1080p feed from the Amp, I am guessing this is because it will not do 4K pass through. If I get a HDMI 2.0a cable and connect the HTPC to the TV directly and use ARC that could work until I get a new Amp? The LG TV does support ARC 5.1 but not HD Audio.

2) Do I need to fiddle about with any settings in Windows? Colour?

3) Calibration, I've seen this calibration video from AVForums. Good place to start?

4) I've noticed some blurring/pixelation on some panning shots. This was a Remux of Spectre through Plex amongst a few titles. Do I need to change the motion settings? 24p related?

Cheers guys!

So I watched The Siege of Jadotville in 4K on Netflix last night. This was running on the TV app and I used ARC for 5.1. I was getting a fantastic picture but I am still getting some kind of weird pixelation/motion blur on certain scenes. It's really quite distracting so certainly not something I can deal with.

Yes, both of the settings are as you described. I have not changed any settings to do with de-juddering though. I watched The Grand Tour in 4K HDR, that was perfect and I had no issues. I watched a copy of The BFG 1080p Blu Ray and that was an awesome picture but still had some motion blur but no where near as much as Netflix. I will experiment with the de-judder settings tonight. Thanks for the help :)

I had an update last night, .65 I believe. I don't think it will impact me as I am not using HDR for gaming. I am awaiting the Youtube HDR update though, I've only seen a few DV and HDR titles but they look stunning.

This week's Grand Tour looked stunning in 4K HDR, particularly the vegetation on Hammond's car, so vivid and detailed. One annoying thing I have noticed is that my TV doesn't seem to save the Wide Colour gamut setting in HDR and just reverts back to Normal when I close the feed. Is this is a bug in the software or me not using it properly?

I was fiddling about yesterday, I basically plan to use Expert Dark and Expert Bright modes depending on conditions but with 'Standard Dynamic range' content (i.e most stuff) it should be set to normal

With HDR or Dolby Vision, it should be set to wide.

TV should save all the settings independently, but you can only change HDR settings when you are watching something in HDR.

I tested Dolby Vision on NetFliix, the TV set the correct colour gamut.
I also tested a HDR demo from a USB memory stick, the TV set the correct colour gamut.
Finally, I tested The Grand Tour, the TV changed the input type to HDR but left the colour gamut as Normal.

You might find that each application has it's own settings as well?

I watched a Standard Dynamic Range show on Netflix last night (having already tested Daredevil in Dolby Vision) and noticed straight away that it was on 'Standard' settings because trumotion was on, so I cycled through to my Expert mode. Hopefully it'll save that now.

Or are you saying that every time you start the Grand Tour via Amazon, it resets the colour gamut?

I am thinking it is the latter. I will get a video in the next day or so and show what I mean.

It's a very annoying bug with the Amazon App. You have to set the colour gamut manually each time. Very annoying as I've been watching The Man in the High Cattle recently which looks stunning but changing the settings for each episode is annoying.

Enjoy, it will blow you away the first few hours that you watch it. I'd definitely recommend using the AV forums review as a starting point for fine tuning the picture settings. Also, this is a great selection of Dolby Vision and HDR10 demo content: https://mega.nz/#F!aBAGBJBb!vGOiLiLo9HT7fBA1qww3-Q
In order for these to work, after you complete the download, you must go into the file properties, and change the file name from .lge to .mkv, files won't work without doing this.

It is a good starting point, I used them for mine and then tweaked the basic colour/brightness afterwards. Huge improvement.

Mine is being calibrated next Tuesday.

Out of interest what did you use to help calibrate the picture? I've got mine set as per the AVForums review but am concerned that I'm not getting the absolute most of the TV. I tend to exclusively use Dark Room and Bright Room. Obviously HDR and DV setting is used where applicable. I am thinking of getting it professionally calibrated but that won't be for at least a few months.

Was in Richer Sound last night to look at a new TV for the apartment and when my housemates and I saw this particular model, we were blown away by the quality of it!

Stunning piece of kit albeit expensive for 3 students to pay for :D

Ended up with the Hisense 50M3300 and are rather happy with it.

But damn, we couldn't stop talking about the OLED even after setting the Hisense up.

How are you getting on with the M3300? I was so close to buying one, they look like a great TV for the price. As I have the 55B6V downstairs, I wanted a cheap TV for the bedroom as I knew I was not going to be blown away with any TV. I was set on picking the M3300 until I decided to get the 49UH770V as I really love the WebOS and the magic remote.

It's everyone's first smart tv and we're quite pleased with it.
It's not as smooth as the B6 instore but for the price, it's decent.
Picture quality is great after using the setings someone posted on AVF.
Menu is great to navigate through, just gotta get used to the layout, very minimal lag.

For £420, we're all impressed.

Nice, good to see that you can get a decent TV for a dirt cheap price. A lot of people will turn their noses up at it because it's not a Sony/Panasonic/Samsung but these people are best ignored:D. I went from a LG 50PK350 plasma (2010) and was blown away by the smart features almost as much as the picture. Before the B6V we had to fire up the HTPC to watch anything, with a SMART TV, it's so much more convenient. Stick Plex on it and you're good to go.

I've got a Plex server (i5 4690K @ 4.2GHz, 250GB EVO 850 SSD, 16GB, 24TB) in my garage, serves up all the media we need. I've got both TVs connected through .ac wireless and running Plex, I've not had problems, even streaming 4K. If you can get something called XPlay or something similar that will play files without transcoding you could get away with a Pi. The only time I have to transcode is if someone is watching over WAN.

Yes , very. I did actually email him back recently to say thanks and how happy I was with the picture now. I did mention that I thought it would take longer. Have gave what I believe to be very valid reasons.

1) I use the fastest meter on the market, the Klein K10-A;
2) I have spent ample time with your OLED model when I was reviewing it, and so know the menus inside and out, and I know what works and what doesn't, so I don't have to fumble and waste time when I'm on your property;
3) I have calibrated hundreds of these sets... you saw how fast I was whizzing in and out the menus;
4) I have developed a highly efficient, OLED-specific calibration workflow in the CalMAN software.

I felt kind of crappy for asking really, the picture is stunning now and the error rate is nigh on perfect. I have zero complaints with the outcome. I guess some are just quicker than others

I've sent a message to him, I doubt he covers Southampton but worth a shot. I'm curious to see what settings he has yours set to, if you're happy to share them, please could you email them to my trust account. I'm curious to see the difference from the AVForums settings.
