Pico 4 out soon?

interestingly Tyriel’s video showed the pico own native streaming app at 5:25, and it has the option to choose between wireless or USB (saying usb 3.0 cable or above required).

Looks like usb streaming will be an option for those that want to - will be interesting to see how the quality compares to Wi-Fi.

The specs for the Pico list it's USB port as 3.2. My motherboard has a USB 3.1 port and I've just taken delivery of my USB3.2 cable for use with the Pico4.
From what I've seen, the theoretical throughputs are:
- DV - 19Gbps
- Wifi 6 - 9Gpbs
- USB 3.1 - 10Gbps

What the above doesn't account for are interference with wifi, or the fact that if I use say my local router that it's ethernet ports max out at 2.5Gbps. Hence my interest in the wired option. It's not on par with DV, but I'm expecting it to be a lot more reliable.

What we don't know is whether the Neo software will be smart enough to fully use the available bandwidth, or deliberately cap it. I can't see that been clarified until we get to play with it.

What I did find interesting on an MRTV video today was his comment that for PCVR users, the HP G2 still has the edge visually. Does make me wonder what connection bandwidth level he was able to use.

He’s only been using virtual desktop Wi-Fi in the videos I’ve seen so far.

With the quest 2 the limitation for USB wasn’t the bandwidth of the connection but rather the decoding ability of the XR2… the pico is supposedly running the XR2 at higher clocks, whether that increases the decoding capabilities will have to be seen I guess!

It’s interesting that they didn’t originally seem to suggest USB tethering would be a thing - you have to wonder if they added it quickly in response to the feedback!

Great that it will be an option either way - looking forward to seeing how well it compares to a “proper” hardwired connection.

I have to say I’m looking forward to getting it - not sure I’ll be keeping my G2. Even if the picture quality isn’t quite up there with the G2 the headset itself looks leagues better… everything from setting up the play space (the G2 sucks for this!), the pass through abilities, the size, weight distribution, no god rays etc. I also really miss the ability I had in the Q1 to play PC games wirelessly for games that suit it - I always found the compression a very worthwhile trade off for freedom of movement… it also meant I could play in the living room with more space while the gaming PC is in the man cave.

This I think will nicely tide me over until we start seeing some more compelling next gen headsets for PC.

It's the excitement

I wouldn't worry too much about data throughput between cables and wifi. The encoding and latency pretty much kills it off. VD goes to 150mb I think which is half what you'd be setting the cable to. Cable recommended bitrate is 300mb. It's a trade off between quality and not having the damn cable hitting your shoulder or ear all the time. I'd be happy to drop a little quality, so long as the image is stable.

Just invested in an Asus AX55 so I'm ready!

So we can have this with a cable? Is it a specific cable? Games like cyberpunk and nms where I’m sitting I wouldn’t mind using a cable.

On Quest 2 the cable makes a big difference in image quality for busy games like Skyrim or Stormland. The image looks noticeably compressed when played wirelessly.

If you don't have a gaming PC, is the games store library for PICO going to be much worse than Quest 2? Trying to decide which I should get as being brand new to VR?

pico aren't really new to the game, but only really come to light with the pico neo link 3, which was a beta headset, now they've put a ton of money into a pico 4 , Bytedance bought them and mass producing them.

their standalone library is small, but because they do PCVR too, their library is bigger

but to be honest

Quest 2 - £400
Pico 4 - £400

i know which i would rather have

Interesting, the Quest 2 battery drains faster than the Pico 4 right up until he starts gaming, when the Pico 4 actually starts to drain faster. He also notices a smoother framerate on Pico 4 at the same time. That fits with the claim that Pico 4 is running its XR2 SoC faster (must be boosting the clock speed when gaming).

I wonder how old the q2 is, and how much use it's had. Since the battery will degrade over time. Think you're probably right about the game using more resources so draining faster. Q2 was probably closer to capped with the streaming etc, which may be why he was getting some micro stutters in the q2.

I'm surprised by that, even with the higher specs I was expecting at least 30min extra battery life.
