Pirates Ahoy!

:( When playing COD4 and running RAH I somehow loose my video signal after about an hour, and the system reboots itself after a minute or two. It has never done this before, and it still does it on a reduced overclock. Even when running FAH and playing COD4, it was fine.

Any suggestions?

I have also noticed my event viewer is filled with 'Kernel-Processor-Power' errors, although I never looked to see if they were they before. I have speedstep and alike turned off.

I thought i had made progress with VMware having reinstalled it and removing all the files i could. The web service thing still would not start, but i managed to gain access via the VI client... ufortunately this was short lived and i was confronted by a BSOD... Workstation it is!

Aside: Anyone have a paid for copy of workstation...? I can get it as a student, though i am not sure its worth all the money... My guess is probably not?
 
I thought it might be that, but it still did it a lower clock :( Bionic will run 24/7 fine, but has a pady when I'm gaming :/

oh well.
 
I'm definately not an expert. In the preferences somewhere is a box for specifying maximum processor usage when not idle. Try changing that?
 
Alternatively just turn BOINC off while you're gaming and turn it back on when you're done fragging.

Or try chaning the settings so it only runs on 3 cores leaving one dedicated to the game.

It's only worth it for not having that horrendous web interface. Otherwise I've never done anything with Workstation that can't be done with Server (there are features - I just haven't found use for them).
 
With regard to VMware and BOINC, could my problems have been related to the fact that both the BOINC manager and VMware try to connect to 'localhost' when running...? Since this isnt actually a server, could this cause problems?

I have both BOINC and VMware workstation up and running as i type. Im a little late to the pirate stomping party, but a few points here and there can only help! I thought the same about VMware workstation... Its £80 for a (non terminating) academic license, which is quite a saving, and quite tempting... hmmm...
 
My dual core machine that I was going to switch over tonight it dead :( The PSU is burnt out, but I'm hoping to can get one for the weekend.
 
Hmm, was fine again when gaming with RAH quit, so I guess I'll just suspend it then. Although I'll probably forget have the time to turn it back on :D
 
Just underclocked my laptop (by setting power management options that enforce a SpeedStep upper limit of 80%), and let BOINC use 100% of one core. So, I've gained 15% extra performance and the temps are 2C lower. Result.

Most of what I do is disk-limited rather than CPU-limited, so I don't mind leaving it set that way. I might even fire up the other core and see how hot it gets (I suspect 10-15C cooler than it was).

I'm running BOINC and Workstation together on Vista 64 and have had no problems. I've had two cores finishing off a FAH wu and two running RAH.

localhost just implies 127.0.0.1, each program will use a different port between 0 and 65535. So unless the ports happen to conflict I cant see it causing a problem.

Could it possible be an overly agressive firewall blocking everything by deafult?
