Playstation 4 being announced February 20th?

I'll pre order from Amazon when the prices are announced at E3, also the PS3 released in the holiday period in Japan and North America but Europe didn't get it until the following March.

Anyone else feel that this was announced just to get out before M$?

It's been in the works for a year according to Geoff Keighley last night as he has been talking to Sony employees. But yes, considering the world's media was brought to the event (at Sony's cost, I believe) it seems odd there was no console unveiling.

I think that was Son'y main point though. They said at the start they want the Playstation brand to expand and the PS4 not to seem as just a box that runs games so the best way to do that is not to show the box and focus on everything else.

Also they probably don't have the final design set in place just yet, at least we can use that as an excuse right? :p

Nah, the CEO joked that they didn't want to reveal everything at once and saving the console for GDC, E3 or TGS (probably E3) will give them something "big" to show off and get the fan base excited. Software demos such as Gaikai are hard to show off and probably wouldn't get have the attention it would have yesterday if they were showing the console, software liek that is stuff we need to experience for ourselves first hand or very in-depth previews (GDC?).

Theres something wrong with your hands,
The XBOX 360 controller is possibly the best ever...

talking about controllers, the current DS3 retails for around £35, i have been lucky and managed to bag a couple for cheaper but they very rarely pop up for cheaper than £35 tbh.

i have 4 controllers altogether, because of when i have people over and i have always had 4 for every console i have bought.

the new ps4 controller looks like it is going to be RRP - £50+

basically i'm going to need a spare £200

Even if you're a massive PS fan, I can't see sense in pre-ordering right now. You're no more likely to get one now than if you pre-order in a few months time when there's more info available.

I'm not even going to go into how silly it is to pre-order so early with a company that nearly collapsed last year. Good luck with that.

No, im saying there wont be much improvement in quality as the generation progresses, relative to the difference in launch to late in the previous generation, because all the developers are instantly much more familiar with the architecture at their disposal.

And you have what to base this opinion upon?
Previous generations used all sorts of odd combinations and engines, not so this generation.
Ive already explained why there was huge improvements in PS3 quality from launch to recently - who had seen CELL before? who had programmed for it before? no one. Who within these companies has utilised x86/64 architecture and PC like hardware before? all of them. The headroom is much lower this time around.
Just to pick up your point, as its a bit too simplistic, the Sony dev libraries are still most likely bespoke and based off what they learnt with the Vita so that is unlikely to be overly familiar to most devs. Also there were rumours that Sony would allow low level access to the GPU/APU which is pretty much unheard of, especially as its unlikely developers had the support before to do this.

Saying that though I still cant see that additional effort happening that often, no doubt it will be the realm for exclusives though. If we believe that the PS4 is at least on par with the next Xbox in terms of performance and how relatively easy it is to code on both then the PS4s just further along the same path the PS3 was but has a massive headstart. No reason to doubt multiplats wont look near identical outside of what coding paths used (though both AMD chips IIRC).
@pseudo The AUX port will be for the PS Eye sensor whatdoyoumcalltits.
Could be - anything that appears to be Sony built and a probable permanent connection (like PlayTV on the PS3) would be more useful if they dont hog up USB ports I suppose!

ps3ud0

Nope. Never ever liked XBOX.

my brother had 3 break in 18 months, the controllers are awful. No blu-ray. I just don't like it at all.

The leaked specs state otherwise, not to mention it being a pretty stupid decision if MS did decide not to go with Blu-ray.

Each to their own I guess, DS3 gives me hand cramps, controller is too small and button position is weird.

It wasnt even close

Yes they have hemorraged a lot of money, but their IP and property are worth a lot of money (although strangely their biggest income last year was from Insurance within their home country).

Remember also that Playstation is actually a seperate company, so this was never in danger in the first place

Maybe its down to principle of paying licence fees to a direct competitor. Im not disputing that it sounds strange staying with DVD (unless they go with something else - they have the funds to do so without question)

I always forget one needs to budget an extra £100-£150 to buy new games with the console, too! Probably looking at 500 notes altogether.

Suprising, I think that the 360 controller is generally seen as the better controller in the current generation, even by die hard PS fans. The next Xbox is rumored to have Blu-ray. Can't speak for reliability of next gen on either side though til we see them, certainly MS track record with 360 wasn't great in the early days.

The jury is out for me but so far MS seem to have put more effort into innovating, unless there's something under cover still PS4 just seems to have updated the hardware specs.

Be interesting to see, I suspect with the death of regular exclusive franchises it could come down to which has the better online gaming, apps and services offerings.
