Playstation 4 being announced February 20th?

biggest cause of screen burn is having your contrast and brightness cranked up, iv had my plasma now over 7 years and have logged a lot of hours with GT5 and fallout 3 not noticed anything.

but if you do the same with a crt you will get screen burn eventually. its just takes a little longer on a crt.

keep contrast and brightness down for first 400 hours.

use the built in features, such as screen adjustment, etc which move the whole picture around on the screen every minute so even if you do have a hud, it gets moved to the left by say 5 pixels, then down by 5, then to the right by 5, then up by 5 and the cycle repeats, therefore the hud moves position every minute preventing screen burn.

after 400 hours you should be fine so long as you do not game for extended periods of time with no normal viewing in between.

you also should avoid black bars / logos and gaming in the first 400 hours also whilst the pixels are settling in.

so long as you buy a quality plasma which was released within the past couple of years you are fine. the older they are the more prone they were to it.

LCD's also suffer from image retention just that it does not get publicised as much due to retailers making more profit from LCD's therefore they say plasma's suffer from it to make more money by pushing LCD's onto them. plasma is the much better tech but it is not very profitable for retailers so that's why they have been pushing all this LED nonsense when the tv's are not LED, they are LCD with LED backlights. whoever came up with the re-naming and rebranding of LCD's to LED has made retailers a fortune, but the tech is hugely inferior to plasma.

you can get retention but in my experiences its very temporary. Ive noticed it with ESPN and eurosport logos but they soon go (for me anyway)

static logos where a big cause before a lot of channels started using "washed out" versions.

HUDs (as above) have also been seen to cause it on the relatively cheaper plasma sets - but imo you pay your money and take your choice.

I have a 50" Kuro (5090 to be exact) and Ive never seen any plasma burn since it was new, with films being paused, channel logos or anything else - in over 4 years

Im not suggesting the above is, but a lot of reports are also scare mongering / exaggerating the problem for their own reasons. Its Very rare to come across this in any significant level to not enjoy the natural image in its entirity

Tbh i think newer plasmas are more prone to image retention than older ones due to higher luminosity, but its only temporary and will go away.

I got a plasma (TXP50V10 panasonic) and now upgraded to a Sony 55HX853 LED

the sony blows the panny out of the water for picture quality , the sony has input lag in games but turn on gaming mode and have LED Dynamic control off and bobs your uncle ..

Im playing Crysis 3 with my PC on the Tv and its fantastic .

So im hoping i do not need to upgrade my tv for when the PS4 comes out as even im impressed with that 8GB of unified GDDR5 Memory.

Thing is, this is GDDR5 we're talking about here, which in terms of bandwidth I believe beats the pants off of the DDR3 memory that most people will be buying for new builds. Afaik GDDR5 memory can only be found on mid to high end graphics cards and the most powerful ones out there only have 6gb GDDR5 of memory (and cost over £800).

So the issue you have is that, even if you buy a £800 graphics card and 16gb of DDR3 memory, you'll be 2gb short of fast ram and still have system overheads to deal with. I get the feeling the next gen will encourage some very cool leaps in the PC market in terms of hardware.

The 16gb of DDR3 would be dealing with the os side/system side of things. The GDDR5 of VRAM would be used for the gaming, Very few games go over 2gb at the moment (most likey due to console ports and therefore having lower textures) so any PC video card with 8gb of GDDR5 would be a massive over kill. I'm sure the massive amount of RAM in the PS4 is probably due to the drop in and out game feature that has no load times I read about. Can't wait to get my pre order done!

agreed

I get practically zero image retention on my few years old 42PF11 monitor which I use in the living room

my parents newer 42 inch consumer plasma seems a lot more prone

maybe not in isolated cases, but in general its MUCH older plasma's that are prone to image retention , but as TV channels have changes their onscreen logos for the most part, its become much less of an issue all around

Haha, totally not surprised that over half of the comments are posted by uninformed idiots, those who can't read, or die hard PC fanboys

The thing that always annoys me is that the PC fanboys will compare the PS4 to a PC that costs £2000+ rather than 1 that costs the same as the PS4(I'm assuming the PS4 will cost £400-500).

I heard the PS4 will be released at £300, they won't make the same mistake they did with the high cost of the PS3.

All i want is the console (duh!) 2 controllers and probably one game to start with. I expect that will cost me in the £400 margin.

Personally I would be happy with that, my wishlist on release is:

PS4 Console
Pair of Dualshock 4 Controllers
inFamous: Second Son
Watch Dogs
Killzone: Shadowfall

I know Watch Dogs and Killzone have been confirmed as launch titles, they said inFamous will be 'around' the launch period so hard to say there. I've always liked the Killzone series and Watch Dogs looks incredible so this set of goodies should keep me going for a while =)
