Playstation 4 being announced February 20th?

Cannot believe there is no Audio CD playback capability in the PS4, preorder cancelled.

I can't remember the last time I used a CD in a console.

Actually yes I can, the first PlayStation when i got it on release day to see the visualizer work.

iirc you need different types of laser to read different types of disc.

Blu-Ray requires a specific laser
DVD requires another
CD requires another

in the past they have designed DVD lasers to work with both CD and DVD by changing the frequency or something along those lines in order to play both types of media. But early CD drives are incapable of playing blu-ray but CD capability was built into DVD drives to help compatibility.

The PS3 on the other hand had 2 separate lasers in it one for blu-ray only and the other for cd and dvd.

I imagine the PS4's optical drive is being made from the ground up (for mainly a security point of view, they do not want another saga like the 360 had with firmware hacking) and therefore when they sent the spec to the manufacturer, they wanted either a single laser capable of playing blu-ray and DVD or a double laser like the ps3 but only specified compatibility for DVD. Therefore the manufacturer left out cd capabilities because it was not in the spec. I imagine this would save "some" money, not a huge amount but still every little helps.

this is all guesswork, but it makes sense, they are selling it at a loss, therefore even saving £2 per console sold would save them over £10 million i would imagine within a few months of launch.

I haven't really cancelled my preorder you dummies! i too don't use CD's anymore but it was just a shock to see that they've probably phased CD playback out, its a shame but it would make sense.

Can you provide the price list you have received from Sony as you seem to be very in the know regarding the pricing and how much they buy components from the manufactures. Don't mean to be rude but I hate people just simply making stuff up and acting like its fact. Most of the components used are of a standard pc affair to an extent. They will not be making anyway near the type of loss they suffered with the PS3 where just about everything was their own technology and the Cell processors costs a bomb to produce.

I expect the removal is to minimize on faults aswell as phasing out. Why have old tech in a console that increases the chance of failures. We all know lasers have always been a sore spot for sony unfortunately.

Agreed, plus I'd imagine quite far into the consoles life that people will barely use CD's anymore anyway! I haven't played a CD in years!

Most of the time, yeah. I think only the Wii has been sold at a profit in recent years. Most of the console makers money comes from the licence to use the develop for the console.

Yeah, even if the WiiU is not a massive success, Nintendo must have a fair whack stashed away you would imagine from the Wii's success and the fact it cost barely anything to produce.

can you read?

which part of this "they are selling it at a loss, therefore even saving £2 per console sold would save them over £10 million i would imagine within a few months of launch" do you not understand?

i'll rephrase it so you may understand before giving up. a small saving no matter how small it may be, would save them millions due to the scale of the losses made on consoles. i used £2 as an example.

also nothing is of a standard pc affair, it's always been custom made for sony, they usually take standard pc stuff and customise it to suit them. the only time they did not do this was with the cell which was completely custom made from the ground up.

Haha, did you see his posts about the price of games / ram?

I'm pretty certain the EE in the PS2 was also a custom job.

Yes, I can read. I have had the total misfortune of reading your completely nonsensical posts. Funny how you miss the point and pull more random figures out your bum as an example. Also "nothing is of standard PC affair"

"Sony described the machine as being like a "supercharged" PC.

It runs off an x86-based CPU (central processing unit) - similar architecture to that found in most desktop computers - and an "enhanced" PC GPU (graphics processing unit). Both CPU and GPU are designed by the US firm Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)."

Also I have actually provided a source to back up my point, I'm still waiting on the price list Sony provided you with :p

Also I'll pick you up on another point about televisions "they reckon most people can only notice the difference between 720P and 1080P when the screen sizes are greater than 42", therefore for a 1080P set you ideally want around 50" to get the most out of it."

I have a 32" 720P tv, a 42" 1080p tv and 3 24" 1080p monitors. There is a massive difference between 720p and 1080p regardless of size. Jeez, I can notice an improve res on a mobile phone screen.

If you really don't see this then the PS4 will be wasted on you.

Yeah, I think his dad's mates uncles mother in law works for Sony so he is pretty "in the know" watch this space for all the "facts" on Sony's new £400 minimum console with £100 pound ram with a disc drive that saves them £2.00 per console saving them £10.000.000 in just a few months and games will cost you £70.00 a pop.

Have I missed any? :D

no one knows

one is made by sony and one is made by microsoft. thats about all we know at the moment.

One thing we do know is Microsoft have one hell of a job on their hands to beat Sony's reveal! Surely if anything it will make them up their game and thats better for us gamers/consumers :D
