Plusnet Discussion Thread

How are people finding the speeds with Plusnet?

I'm in the last quarter of my BT infinity contract and I have had enough of their poor service speeds so I won't be renewing my contract with them.

Have a look at peak-time PN graphs.

Thanks for that. Well for me the upload speed is always much lower for me on the BTW speed test. Just did it now and got an upload of around 12mb but on speedtest and TBB I get around 17mb. The download however is always pretty much the same on all speed tests.

Which result should I be looking at?

Sync speed is:

Down: 79987
Up: 19832

tbh i dont know which one is telling correct Upload speed lol
actual upload speed that i saw was during seeding a torrent it was 2x 500kbps
nver seen anything above 2mpbs in torrents

Woot engineer came in this morning, took him all of 5 mins to install the new faceplate...connected the modem up then left. Set up my Asus router and now online:D.

Getting 73mbps down and 18 mbps up so not too far off what i was expecting. Asked the guy how far my cabinet was and he said its about a 2 min walk from my house so am very close to the cabinet itself. Said i should get some stupidly fast speeds.

Ran a speedtest and my results were:

Not bad, not bad at all:D

That's the speeds I was getting but after a week or so it has gone down to 65 down and 17 up, no idea why.

can someone shed some light on this for me. I'm with Sky Fibre Pro atm and have signed up for Plusnet today. Now I've heard because I'm on Sky LLU that the order will not go through and that I could need a new line installing as Sky will block my current line and the number I've had for 20 years. And also, I've noticed on my Plusnet account that they want to charge me £1.50 for the privilege of paying by direct debit through my DEBIT account, surely this can't be right. If it is then I see an instant cancel coming on and they can refund my £31.50 from today.

This is not how I expect things to happen and is most certainly not a good start to my Plusnet experience.

Looks like my fibre order will be installed at the start of july! - I noticed the bt open reach socket resides in the closet though so cabling will be horrible. Is there a neat way to work around this? It's a new build home.

Would also like to know re: switching from sky fibre (unlimited)to plusnet as I'm considering this. Anyone else gone through this?

I assume your referring to the following thread: http://forums.broadband-finder.info/fibre/4225005-colchester-council-part-2.html
Have the issues been mentioned anywhere else?

Also sounds completely wrong they want to charge £1.50 for paying via direct debit? Most companies do the opposite and charge you if your NOT paying by direct debit.

AFAIK they charge the £1.50 if you want to pay the recurring monthly bill using a credit card (or a debit card that acts like one). There's no charge for paying by direct debit.

I've just signed up to PlusNet from Sky Fibre. PlusNet told me I would keep my tel no as it was given by BT and not assigned by Sky.

My understanding is that a new physical line will not be needed. All that will be done at the exchange is that the line will be moved from Sky's equipment back to the BT telephone network (a cease and re-provide).

They don't charge for direct debits.

The £1.50 charge is if you pay your monthly bill by credit card. It does not does not apply to one-off payments.

Hi there Deuce, if the line has always been a Sky LLU line and has never been a BT line unfortunately plusnet wouldn't be able to do a working line takeover; as the number belongs to Sky they have the right to keep that number as it is not within Openreach system. Sorry about the confusion of the non-direct debit surcharge, this is when you pay by card as there is a small fee from the card supplier to process the payment.

From my account info, I'm using a Debit account, maybe it's because it's not totally setup yet.

You are currently paying your subscription by credit/debit card.

Subscription payments by credit/debit card are subject to a £1.50 monthly charge.

Thanks, that makes sense. :D

Thanks, yes my line used to be BT before it was Sky, so again I'll be happy with that :D

Hi horrorxpunk, Thank you for providing the advice and guidance.

So just to confirm- if my number has been previously BT I should have no issues switching over and:
1. Keeping my number
2. Should be a straight forward switchover for both broadband and phone ie. None of the issues with having to cancel sky and wait 2 weeks/ get a complete new line.
3. I should have no problems placing an order online as normal.

Thanks,
1mm3

If you spoke to one of our provisioning team they can check and verify that the number is retain able, in order to do it I'd need the telephone number and I don't think that is something you would want to post in an open forum :P I am considering setting up an email address for any queries that will require additional details.

Anyone able to help, time to leave BT ASAP!!

I can get up to 40Mb
I will download 24/7
Phone is not an issue
Cheapest deal going?

When chatting to them they say different to the website

Online offers are always better than the phone deals, because well it saves us money also and there is a 6 months half price deal on the website for fibre grab it quick :D as long as you take home phone. Some of the guys mite be able to advise you about the quidco or topcashback offers going on.

Thanks horrorxpunk,

I simply can't justify spending £40 on Virgin cable a month any longer and will be ordering the "Unlimited Fibre Broadband and calls" on Friday. Frankly, even if if Virgin halved their prices I wouldn't be staying with them, due to the ridiculous speeds in the evening and the inept support I've had. I've been with Virgin since Blueyonder 512k came out but I'll not be giving them another penny.

Agree, I am 100Mbps FTTC with virgin and I had to make some serious complaints before they did anything but was only getting 10Mbps on a weekend during peak times, not acceptable! Unfortunately Plusnet Fibre isn't available in my area :-( and I am paying around £80 at the month it's really bad.

RE:horrorxpunk perhaps you can help me rather than me ringing up plusnet. I had my fibre installed on fri and all is well, getting 73mb down and 17mb up so am happy with that speed so far.

I know you guys say you dont do traffic shaping but does that apply to torrents??. Reason i ask is that im getting around 1.7-2.0mb average download speed which isnt that much faster than my recently retired Be connection which was 18mb down and 1mb up. Like i said when i first applied to get fibre, i was told that there was no traffic shaping on the network so just wanted to know if that applies also to torrents or not??

Cheers.
