Just a bit of a bump, as the thread seems to have gone quiet. When the engineer came to install everything I'd already unlocked an Echolife modem using the help in this thread, so he gave me a spare

Can anyone tell me anything about my stats, that's not already obvious? I.e. I'm at the sync limit at what the line can achieve.

Here is a route map from our house to the FTTC cabinet, http://goo.gl/maps/YMu5d although I would trim 100-150m off for the roundabout so I would say we're closer to 650m from the cab.

I trimmed off the roundabout and coverted to KM and it comes out @ 1.1km, looking at your line attenuation etc you don't have a 1.1km line, so I doubt the line would take the route you show.

https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?sadd...=w&doflg=ptk&mra=dvme&mrsp=1&sz=18&via=1&z=17 Trimmed roundabout

I would say your line takes this route, it may even cross the road and go up that footpath. https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?sadd...w&doflg=ptk&mra=dpe&mrsp=1&sz=18&via=1,2&z=19

Ok, just after a bit of advice really..

My connection lost sync this morning around 5am, and dropped down to a sync speed of 62564. I can now see that the max attainable is around 75380 with a downstream snr margin of 7.4dB

Is it worth rebooting the modem so that it establishes a higher sync?

I'm concious that DLM may kick in if I reset the modem just to try to attain a higher speed, and limit me to a long therm cap of 62000 if it believes that is more stable. Personally, I hate DLM but that's by the by :p

I've not had any drop outs at 75000 apart from when I've been tweaking the modem, so I'm confident it'll handle the higher sync speed.

Thoughts?

The resync would have been the DLM kicking in to re-porfile your line, the DLM usually changes the line between 5am to 6am.

It might not have changed it due to any line drops, but the error rate might have been high, keep an eye on the error rate.

when you want to tweak or change anything on the line or re-sync don't just turn it off and on, there is a reboot option in the modem under Maintenance > Device > Reset, this is better as the DLM won't see it as a dropped connection.

Very nice mate, works fine here, windows 8 64bit. I will kick things off.

FTTC been installed for 2 years nearly, cab pretty full, crosstalk chopped about 7mb attainable rate off over a period of 2 years isn't bad,

been at this speed for the past year now and unlikely to drop (unless faulty) line length is roughly 300 meters.

Uptime has been 2 weeks ish since I last rebooted the modem.

Hi Locky & thanks for the feedback.

That's great to hear.
Neither Ronski (who created the settings editor) or I knew if it would work with Windows 8 as all our testing has been on XP, Vista & Windows 7.

Similar chopped off mine too, but 7Mb off my initial 33Mb isn't that great

How did you find the setting up process & have you started the Ongoing logging?

I haven't started the ongoing logging yet, I wish I did as something has chopped 2mb off my attainable rate for no reason, no new installs today as I can see the cab and been no BT about.

It's why the estimate is conservative, it's based on a full cab and reason why you get higher speed (usually) is the cab isn't full so there is less crosstalk.

I have found out what chopped a few MB off my line too, spoke to BT ELC (on good terms now) they have changed the algorithm in my cab which is meant to make lines more stable.

I have found I'm getting even less error seconds (not that I had many anyway) and bit's swap is different and shared tones have increased.

This is my current stats (line been up for weeks), I not entirely sure how long my line length is. It can take 3 possible routes

1: roughly 290 meters
2: roughly 350 meters
4: roughly 400 meters

Tandy? are you serious? :D thought they went bust on the 90's?

Which cable did you get?

Edit seems they live online now and used ADSLnation for their DSL products... not bad.

Mine too, had everything, Jamo speakers, CB radios, my fav shop of all.

Ive ordered a 0.5m high speed DSL cable, see how it goes, not really for speed, but for cable management.

The High speed DSL cable is here and it's added 1.5mb to my attainable rate, not bad really, I wasn't really bothered about the speed, just to tidy the install up and looks much - much neater.

For the price, I recommend it.

Thanks for the tip; I've just ordered one. It looks to be of much better quality than the ones that are bundled with modems.

Is there a preferred way to connect this new cable without it looking like a disconnection, and therefore possibly affecting the sync speed?

log into the modem - reboot it - before it starts back up (resyncs) - turn it off and install cable.

I swapped my DSL cable over for the Tandy high quality one yesterday. I did so at the same time as installing the new modem firmware as I didn't want to have more than one disconnection in case DLM saw them as dropped connections.

Because of this it is difficult to say which was responsible for the DS speed increase, but there was a definite increase. Attainable speed went up by 4mb, sync speed by about 2.5mb.

I would say both have a part to play, very nice increase for little outlay.

This will help people whos lines are not as expected.

I would be happy with that.

You will notice less crc/hec errors too, this might also help people who drop in and of fastpath.
