Project car boot

when do you estimate this build will be finished by?

probably not that long now. the case itself is now finished just a matter of putting it all together, got most of the front bay wiring done yestrday, but still a little to do. have to mount the tuniq and then pop the mobo in and link it all up. everyting worked at the beginning when i benched it so fingers crossed all should be ok.

So now the real easy bit.

Attach the cooler to the cpu and then place mobo into the case

yeah right.

mobo with old cooler

The cpu underneath. Don't know anything about it, does it overclock nice???

Bit of TIM ( I prefer the spread it all over method, served me well so far)

spot the problem????

Quick visit from Mr Dremmel

Which might need a new disc

Much better

So all that sorted, simply a matter of dropping the whole lot into the case
Or so you'd think
(and yes I had checked that it wasn't too high). Although I hadn't thought for a moment the cross brace would be an issue.

Still at least the door goes on so that's a plus

And I got the IO panel fitted

Wish me strength guys as I'm basically faced with having to chop the cross brace out of the painted and finished case which may make something of a mess of it.

If I repeated the words I said when I found out the brace was in the way I'd get a lfe ban from the forums

something along the lines of "SLIPPIN RIPPIN ZAR BARG A DING DONG"

giving thoght to rivit option
6 rivets in total in3 sets of 2
might be easier but will need more of a paint job as the strut close covers over parts of the case that will then show as bare metal
if i just cut off bit that's in the way its a bigger job and technically more demanding but on the plus side should be able to hand paint the bare ends

neither are jobs i' m looking forward to but gonna give it a try tonight

Prepped for surgery

Immediatly post op. (the foreign body has been sucessfully removed)

In recovery bay (the wound has been dressed)

ANY MORE MAJOR UPSETS AND I SWEAR THE WHOLE LOTS GOING IN THE BIN

Coming along nicely.

I had a good car boot find once although that was a long time ago and would be very out dated now. I think I created a case for that and sold it on in the end for more than i paid for it :-)

I haven't read the whole thread, so sorry if you have already said but what's the plan for this? just a 2nd rig or something else?

Anyway keep up the good work.

J

didn't really start out with a plan as such, i just kinda picked up the case as it had a mobo and cpu in it and was too good to pass up. I did want to improve my modding skills as i had previously only worked with antec skeletons which are diferrent to say the least (also easier)

if i keep it i'll probably use it as a mule or as a nas/downloader

I might put it on MM or if someone makes me a sensible offer it might not even get that far

G-Dubs I think you should get a copyright for this case as some manufactures trawling this site might steal your Creation, I will not be surprised though, fantastic job so far..If only I had the courage.

The wiring up is taking quite a while, as i've got quite a bit of "custom" stuff goung on and not a lot of places to hide stuff.. I could just lob it all together but having come this far wanted to finish it off nice.

Hopefully not too hot tomorrow so I can crack on.

Bit of work tonight as it cooled down and I could work without the risk of sweating dripping all over the mobo (not good)

Rear fan in (but yet to sort wiring)

Rear PCI panel (feel an urge to paint the chrome of the cards back panels)

That's a shame. Maybe it would have been a step too far anyway.

Coming together nicely.

Those P4 670s have been known to clock very well. Saw one go up to 7ghz on YouTube under liquid nitrogen.

I powered itall up right at the start o the whole thread to see if it actually worked and when it posted thefirst thing itsad was "overcloch failed" so probably had a healthy oc on it. As i've now got some decent cooling on it I mighthavea bit of a play.

Excellent Thread.... i dont usually read these all the way through, but this one i have,. and will be watching with interest, not only because i too am an avid carboot sale visitor, but because of the attention to detail you have shown on what is a budget build (although i'd guess your time and paint budget is somewhat higher than originally planned !)

ANY MORE MAJOR UPSETS AND I SWEAR THE WHOLE LOTS GOING IN THE BIN
you have no idea how many times those exact words have floated through my head with many projects, not only pc related !

I'm surprised your dremel has lasted, i've blown up about 3 of their "pro" range ones, look very similar to yours, but mine have been black, i ended up buying a black and decker one from the bootsale for all the abusively hard work, and baby the dremel one so i dont risk blowing it up again, seems it liked to eat metal dust and short out the brushes and motor  ... not good !

I could however cry that you are so far away, because i could have fixed that front panel filler plate in about 30 seconds including time to set my kit up.... i'd have stuck you 2 or 3 spot welds on the back of it to hold it and then you could fill the seam, or i could have welded it in all the way and let you polish the weld back before spraying it.... next time, run it down your local fabricators/car body repair shop..... or anywhere that is likely to have a welder, it will take them about 5 seconds to tack into place !... literally.

Excellent build, i'm impressed, especially with your patience with the cable braiding... those pins can be a nightmare, i usually use a sewing pin to gently fold back those little tabs so they are flush and will release the pin... remember they are not sprung steel, so you can fold them back one at a time, you dont have to do both at once, if there are even 2 on them... for the 24 pin plug, i use a very small watch makers screwdriver.
The LED work was impressive too, for me it was easy to understand the ways required for fitting them, as i have some back ground in this type of stuff, but as you said this was your first dabble in this you did well, and with some excellent help too :)

And yes, your right about the PCI card chrome back plates... sorry, time to crack out the paint tin again :P

keep up the pics and stuff, can't wait to see this finished
