man those GPU's are MAHOOSIVE .. compared to the liddy biddy AMD ones on the HD58xx series

still looks good under water blocks though, did you say you're going full cover ? getting backplates too ?
 
Well it's been an absolute DISASTER trying to install the 480 waterblock. People on here were making it sound easy. I was nervous about the thermal pads, and they turned out to be a horrid job. Mostly because EK says that they supply more than enough thermal pads than are needed for the job, yet I ended up using all of them :confused:

Not only that, it said to use the 1.5mm pads on the mosfets, yet all the pads were the same bloody size! So I ended up using 1mm pads on the mosfets. The backplate won't install either because the screw holes don't even line up with the screw holes on the card!

Then the EK instructions are goddam awful, it says to remove the block to check the contact is perfect. **** that, I'm not taking it apart and putting it back on again!

Somehow, I feel as if I've just spent money on pc that will royally FAIL, and I'm going to be standing there looking like an *******

The card didn't come with a backplate
 
That's a bit weird that the holes don't match up, as all current GTX 480s are reference. Which one did you buy out of interest mate?

Don't give up yet, have a wee chill session, and then go back to it :)
 
Just opend up one on my EK 470 blocks and it says in the instructions that all the pads are 1mm thing and they give you more than enough, checked the pads too and there all the same size proberly because the 470 layout is different and the block is made to make easy contact unlike the 480 ? i dont know not had a 480 and im still waiting on my 470s.

If the thermal pads arent making good contact phone up EK and they will proberly send you some more for free and if not just bite the bullet and buy some, it will all be worth it in the end and remember patience! :D youve done well so far keep up the good work! :D.

That's very weird. Thanks for the info though, as I was thinking of buying a Zotac card. But the EK configurator says it should work based on a visual inspection of the product.

Seems strange though mate, as ALL GTX 480s are currently reference design. You definitely have the correct block yes? :) Just checked some photos of 480 boards, and every single on is the same.

There we go :p Thought that might have been the problem :) Like I said, all reference, so that's the only reason why :p

I feel sorry for you mate, but don't be disheartened. How many days is it since you ordered? You should hopefully still be under DSR, so you can return it easily :) Even then, it's only the backplate, so not the end of the world. It could have been the wrong block :)

I'm not sure what to do now.

1.Risk the mosfets not having good contact
2.Getting some more thermal pads
3.Getting a new waterblock and installing that

2 and 3 involve dissembling the card, which is going to be a biatch to put back on.

As I said in your other thread, try contacting EK. Good things come to those who wait :) (I know I shouldn't say this, because I am just as impatient), but don't risk your new 480 by testing it when you fell that the block isn't installed properly.
