PS3 Impressions and Opinions Thread **Now includes pricing information**

Indeed Mr OBhave, this will be a good indicator of how well rockstar have got to grips with developing for each platform, but with rockstar already begun to develop for 360 ( tabletennis ) and that fact that developer kits for PS3 are not out until june/july they will have an uphill struggle to get to grips with PS3. I think in terms of the constant bickering between 360/ps3 fans then I think it has to do with all the falsehoods put out against 360 aswell as against ps3, i.e. 360 can't do real hi-def ( wrong ), releasing two different models is stupid ( correct when it means you lose out one of sony's key battle grounds, blu-ray hi-def playback ) and PS3 graphics will own 360's ( can't happen, although each might be better at certain techniques ther will be no discernable difference ). I think each will have it's own market and support but as for an out and out winner, well let's just say it has become a whole different battleground since xbox/ps2.

Having said that, Rockstar has a large number of smart cookies working for them and you can bet your bottom dollar that SONY would've been giving them premium support when it comes to Dev. Aside from that, I thought the Dev kits have already been out for a while... The impression that I got is that loaner Dev kits were given to SCE partners and major developers and the final Dev kits are going to be released for purchase in July.

Essentially the dev kits have been in the wild for a while, just not with the final 'Market PS3' configs in them. According to IGN, SONY were updating the current Dev kits with the new revisions to bring them up to speed during March...

*cough* LOL nothing like a small sweeping statement to make a point :p

Thanx

I have to admit I wanted to like the PS3, I wanted sony to awe me with something stunning, but what I took away from sony was that we lied about the specs, the features, we critisised ms for two packages and we do it ourselves, the lack of even near finished games ( even at this close time of the november launch ) and most of all the price. Sony like manchester united did with football launched a new way of looking at consoles, the games and the machines, and just like man u they have become stale and mediocre rested on their laurels for too long and look like they are about to be overtaken by a much richer team with fresh ideas and new blood, ( and hell I'm a man u supporter.....the shame )

I suppose sony would give rockstar a lot of support but what really struck me about this whole incident was that ms got to announce the new gta and not sony, it seems rockstar may have found a new bed partner :p

Yeah, I'm the same (Not a Man U supporter - I'm a Kiwi, All Blacks all the way :p ) I also wanted to be blown away by the PS3, and really I am somewhat underwhelmed. I also agree that they have sat on their hands for too long and are now playing quite a harsh game of catch up. You'd hope that after a year of being behind X360 they might've used the time to really sqeeze something breathtaking into it... maybe not...

No they arent the same. Have a look. The PS3 value pack is much better than the Premium xbox 360 pack. Value wise they win hands down.
Maybe you'd care to elaborate as I really don't see ~£100 worth of added value when comparing the Sony retard version with the 360?

Agreed - I'm sure we're all capable of using the english language properly... although sometimes you have to wonder!

Actually i getting a bit bored of slagging of the PS3, last week it was Nintendo. Its been fun winding people up but im getting tired hearing about next gen consoles. Think im going to wait till the PS3 is released before saying anything more.

Oh dear.

Shall we not use the word "Brain Storming" anymore for fear of offending epilepsy suffers? Maybe "Mind Mapping" would be better?

What about "Ba Ba Black Sheep"? Wait a second, I think people find that offensive too.

First of all the price difference is much less than £100 for the cheaper PS3.

Value from a purely out of the box point of view:

PS3 value pack includes everything the Xbox 360 does. Blu Ray and free online gameplay access are included. Not to mention superior graphics and features. The special feature of the controller is something that could be a selling point. Blu Ray will be used for games too. The HDD setup means all games can use HDD for loading.

Premium Xbox 360 does not feature Blu Ray(nor HDDVD addon). Xbox Live Gold requires a significant additional investment as its a subscription service.

So clearly on value its pretty good compared to whats out there. Its just that the prices are quite high for what we have seen in a long while. I think the Hi Def Blu ray wanters will bite because the cost of players are silly right now.

i wasnt getting at him, quite a few other have used it and i think it is starting to become an acceptable form of insult when i dont feel it should be, this is mainly adults on here would expect it you know?

just a general request if people could stop using it.

Now this has offended me! Why the hell do you only see it as meaning 1 thing? Maybe you should learn what the word means before taking offence? My brother is handicapped having been born with Polio, and there's no way I'd use this word to describe anyone with a dissability!
Retarded means 'slow or limited in intellectual or emotional development' or 'impeded', and does not merely or exclusively refer to people, and this is the reason it is used in this sense.
Jeebus, some people!

Retard (is a noun not an abjective) also means 'to make something slower' i am struggling to figure out how that applies to a cheaper console and think it is a poor use of the word, retarded could maybe pass

As i said before this wasnt merely a dig at you, but in general on this bored i think it is annoying and insulting.

On the contrary, I'd suggest the price difference is likely to be more than £100, but that aside.
XB live is also free for exactly the same functionality - it has yet to be determined whether gaming on PS3 will also be free as this has yet to be referenced. It is entirely possible (and probable) that SONY will leave the developers to run the gaming side and charge a subscription per game. This is something that could cost a hell of a lot more than XBlive.
Blu Ray is pointless without HDMI. No one will buy this as a BR player, and anyone that thinks they will is deluded as movie playback will be restricted to 480p (the same as DVD).

To 'retard' something is to impede or limit something (which removing wifi, flash reading and HDMI is). I have trouble in not seeing how you can understand this in this context, and think that maybe you're being a tad overly contentious on this?

Anyway, we're getting off subject, so maybe we can all stop being quite so touchy?

Just been reading this blog comment and it actually sums up how i'm feeling about the ps3

"Sony never needs to worry about development costs. They let other companies do their work for them. After last nights E3 press conference, the Internet lit up with heavy and harsh criticism for video gamings leading seller, and all of that still isn't enough to give them what they deserve.

A Nintendo representative was famously quoted after last years E3 that they didn't reveal the controller for their upcoming console because other companies would steal it. Lo and behold, they were right. After what was already an under whelming showing, PlayStation developer Ken Kutaragi pulled a standard Dual Shock controller from his breast pocket to a silent audience of journalists. When the controller was put to use, we learned it had motion sensors.

Not really motion sensors though. What's inside is a tilt sensor. Phil Harrison, president of Sony Worldwide, proudly boasted about how innovative this controller would be during a sloppy, obviously almost impossible to control demo of Warhawk. No one in the audience believed a word of this, and the lack of any real cheering proved it.

It's stunning enough that he had the audacity to claim innovation, but the controller doesn't even offer as much as Nintendo's upcoming Wii. The PS3's Dual Shock only senses tilting, not actual movement that could move a character in and out of the screen. A press release later stated the controller wouldn't feature any vibration features either, something they failed to mention during the conference.

Adding to a list of things they must have "forgotten" about, it seems like a pretty important detail when the lower priced $499 model won't have HDMI support, Wi-Fi, or a slot for memory sticks. They indicated the price difference would be because of the hard drives, a fine way to try and slip by important facts to the press who may not read the rundown on paper.

Even without the lies though, the press event was abysmal. Other than the expected numbers (which of course use numbers shipped, not sold), a pointless video that ran for a few minutes showed gamers around the world discussing their PlayStation experiences. All they seemed to care about was the graphics, and the pathetic attempts to build up the brand name failed miserably.

Sticking with the numbers, a Gran Turismo HD demo went on for ages. Showing the Grand Canyon stage would have been enough to get the point across, but Sony felt it was necessary to keep going to tell everyone the numbers. 1080p video was heavily pushed, a feature that, again, you'll only get in the higher priced model since it's the only one with the proper video port.

One success was the Eye of Judgment demo, a radical new use for the Eye Toy, and a promising concept. The response to playing cards put in front of the camera was amazing to watch, and (for the sake of not avoiding the cliché) the possibilities are endless. This is more of what they should have shown.

Instead, they gave us an extended showing of SingStar, a previous European hit that will offer a "shop" when it makes it onto the PS3. For more wasted time, they explain features Microsoft had in place at the launch of the Xbox 360, including the sale of cards at retailers that can be used to purchase shop items.

In what would seem like a blatantly stupid move, they'll be allowing people to send videos of themselves singing thanks to the EyeToy to their friends or others. How long before someone starts spreading home made porn around PlayStation land to minors? The repercussions to the industry could be devastating without strict control measures, and even then, they promised video chatting.

As if the blatant copying wasn't enough, most of the games were disappointing too. That's not to say everything looked bad. Resistance, a FPS set in an alternate 1950s, really raised the bar. Metal Gear Solid 4 was of course unforgettable, Hot Shots Golf was a pleasant surprise, and Gran Turismo had some highlights, aside from the fact that it wasn't actually being played.

The rest of lineup was a total wash. Why they chose to highlight a sequel to the low-rated Genji is bad enough, but when the player couldn't see the boss for nearly a minute because the camera wouldn't move properly, that's not the way to debut a new system. Most trailers were nothing more than pre-rendered CG with little if any game play. The attempt at passing off Eight Days as game play was hilarious, with the cheap HUD disappearing at will, impossible to control camera angles, and the always important flashy graphics being the highlight.

Eventually, Sony will get bitten. They've had one single innovation since they entered this industry, and that's the EyeToy. Everything else has been a take off of a rival company, and it's getting to the point where even the mainstream will figure it out. This press conference proved how far they're willing to go to copy their competitors. Sony isn't innovative as Phil Harrison claims. They're thieves, and cocky ones at that.
