PS3 Impressions and Opinions Thread **Now includes pricing information**

well taken from another forum along the lines off this

"We have more power than the 360 and the controller of the Wii, we getting the best of both worlds" about the PS3. I hate to say it but for most young people and the naive its gonna be there POV as well :(

Not for the value/core PS3 VS the premium Xbox 360. Which was my whole point. Also if you want to get your Premium xbox to a similar level to PS3 value pack it would cost more.

Unless the HD-DVD addon costs in excess of £100, then you're still going to get better value from a 360 really if you're just after gaming machine, and in the first couple of years Blu-Ray isn't going to be needed for the games, though in the coming years when games do take up that extra space for detail and more levels, Blu-Ray will help the advantage. But still, it's a lot of money, and I wouldn't call the basic package value.

Xbox LIVE Gold like functionality is FREE. Gaming online is free. Confirmed many times now.
Its no different than Xbox LIVE(assuming xbox live gold is free). For games like FFXI you will have to pay. ........

I've said earlier in this thread, or another I can't remember, but Sony have hardly covered their online system.

Yes, they have said it will be 'free', but so is Xbox Live, and from the way they demonstrated, the only stuff they did show was general browsing, buying and social stuff that you can do on Xbox Live Silver.

What Sony cleverly didn't go into is any of the online multiplayer stuff, which is leading me to believe they're still undecided about a pricing system for gamers to actually play their games online. It would be great if Sony did offer a fully free online service including gaming, but we'll have to wait and see.

Sony had hardly any prerendered/CG games this time. Not even a handful. They ha dmore playable games than both companies too! Which is a first :p

I'm still waiting on actual INGAME footage, where somebody is playing a game live. Never mind the 'ingame' videos that have been shown, I want to see what these games play like. Graphically there's usually a big difference between cleverly done CG/Ingame trailers and what the games usually look like. Hopefully will get something interesting over the coming days though.

Ok as Ive said before All I wanted out of Sonys press confrence this year is an excact date and a price which is what we got so good.

Now that I think about it theres so much more I want to know before I commit to pre ordering I want to know the excact media capabilities such as weather I can upscale normal dvds for movies playback weather it can play divx ect.

I also want to know more details about the ps1 emulator on the psp how will it work will it be a program that we buy to convert all our ps1 games or do we download them and if so at what price.

Just before E3 sony were getting some bad press over chip yields lack of final dev kits etc and rummor had it that sony was going to pull somthing really special out of the bag at this years E3 but alas what did we get the press confrence started nearly an hour late and a duel shock controller with tilt WTF.

If sony would have givin more info on the ps3 features and the ps1 emmulator on the PSP I think that they wouldnt have dissapointed as much as they did.

Heres hoping that sony have an event comming up in the next couple of month where they show us new games (not just sequels) and give us all the info we need with regards to the things Ive mentioned above.

I guess the ps3 pricing aint that bad really, how much will it cost to buy the hd-dvd when its out for the 360 ? i bet £60 mark.

I highly doubt it will be £60 it`ll probably be about £150 - £170 (thats a rough guess) then again you never know.

i'd guestimate £100 mind you it might be closer to the 170 mark, but if it is, nobody will buy it i dont think. thing about HD-DVD is the players are ment to be cheaper to buy also.

I'd like it to be < £100, but the way MS price things, I'd have to estimate from £129.99 to £159.99, but the higher it is, the less people will go for it as you said.

yeap i was trying to put that a few pages ago and started getting a ripping for it :-\

Yup that happens far too easy with things like this, if peeps just thought about it, its pretty obvious there isn't a lot in price difference with a hd-dvd.

No way in the world will i pay £100 for the HD-DVD, i thought £60 was expensive.

It wont be as expensive as people think.
Remember that its 'just' the drive. No decoding HW, just a drive. And considering HD-DVD drives are pretty similar in working to a normal DVD drive (compared to how a BR drive works), i can see it coming in at under £100.

lets not forget just a wireless adaptor is like what 60 quid?? u can buy a generic USB wireless adapter for PCs for like 20 quid, shows you the markup they make for it to be xbox compatible and put the MS name on it.
I'm Just trying to give a comparison, dont expect that for 60 quid when the wireless is 60 quid u know?

that actually is now making me reasses my guess of 100 quid hmm

Am I the only one thinking that Sony has just gone about the PS3 the wrong way, it "looks" like they are copying everything from Microsoft and Nintendo.

I have a 360 and I will be getting a Wii but I just dont think I could afford the price of a PS3 and nothing about the PS3 jumps out, they have lost most of the games I would have wanted GTA PES to MS.

The PSP has been a bit of a failure as it hasnt rolled Nintendo over as im sure they expected to do when announcing it due to a few factors imo (loading times, PS2 games on a handheld isnt what handheld gamings about, battery life, trying to shove UMD down peoples throats) and the PS3's opening pricing structure and packages seem wrong as well, it just seems Sonys lost the plot and are making it up as they go along.

Superdude - this was posted earlier in the thread which is why I commented about being deluded if anyone thought the psp was a failure.

To be honest I think it will be classic case of the whole ming more than sum of its parts with the promise that could be made of psp and PS3 and it could help sell a shed load more of both parts

In a way yes, but the fact that it'll be marketed as a HD output device when it cant do anything HD apart from the games (asuming it supports component) is a little farsical.
.

Two things I would like to try and query in regards to this comment?

1) Surely the ps3 is as much a hidef unit as sky HD, it all depends on what source you feed it (sky hd box will still be showing standard def channels also) - and how you attach it to your display. Ok so they could market it as an HD compatible / HD capable unit - but even that muddies the water even more in my opinion, dont you think???

2)Blue Ray is by default a hidef medium , so if this player is a standard part of the ps3 - which it certainly is - and the right output sockets are there - which they are, what is wrong with calling it an "HD output device"? This is exactly what it IS.

Worst case scenario is that IF HDCP is required for all movies on Blue Ray, Sony being a movie studio along with the producer of the PS3 would have to release a firmware / bios upgrade after initial release, and then its upto every individual punter whether they use a standard tv with normal resolution or pay out for HiDef versions and use PS3 as it was designed.

Cant really see any arguement myself with the PS3 NOT being HD output myself, but more than willing to listen to reasoned arguement if anyone thinks otherwise
