PS4 and Xbox Rumours

Red Porsche said a few posts above that this is where the Gaikai purchase Sony made might come in. They could stream PS3 games over the net.

That's a very expensive and complicated venture just to allow people to play old games that they are not making money off of, instead of buying new PS4 games.

If that happens, it's certainly not going to be free, and how are you going to be able to verify that you own the game for it to then allow you to stream it?

It doesn't make any kind of business sense to do this, unless as I said, they charge you a fair amount of money for it. But then, who is going to pay to play games they already own?

Or could play on an emulator with vastly superior Image quality and no Aliasing...

You're missing the point. They are releasing a new console. Why would they go to all this effort just so you can play your old games?

How many people really carried over xbox1 or PS2 games onto their new consoles for any significant amount of time? A fraction of their paying customers.

I will happily eat my hat if I'm wrong, but it just doesn't make sense to think that Sony will create an entirely new, complicated and expensive to run system just so that a small proportion of their customers can play their old games.

Just keep your existing PS3 under the TV, and job done!

IMO its not "just to allow people to play old games that they are not making money off of" its letting people plays games they already own and keeping those customers. I think most people would buy the new console to buy the new games anyway.

I could see them introducing it into a Netflix type service.

EDIT

I don't think Sony would drop that much money on a technology just to allow people to stream old games. I think they have long term plans to introduce more games to a streaming-only service so they and the developers can cut out the retail middle men (and increase profits) just like itunes did with music. But until 99% of people who buy games have a good enough (or even an internet connection) then this sort of service won't replace discs for a while. Or I could just be talking a load of waffle!

I hope they get the designs right too, I want something that will look good more like a HTPC than a console especially seen as they will certainly be aiming it like this.

Nice clean lines, in brushed aluminium would be amazing.

Well I've been a big 360 fan this generation but 1.8 vs 1.2 terraflops sounds like a big Playstation advantage. Of course there's still a lot to consider loyalty programs, back compatibility, controllers, launch window and of course exclusive game franchises.

Still if I was a Sony man id be quietly optimistic.

Xbox 360 has 77 GFLOPS
PS3 230 GFLOPS.

just matters what they do with it

Link a PSN account to a controller? I hope this means they've copied Microsoft's Xbox login system as that is pretty much perfect. It's silly having to have a user login to get to the XMB and then another one for PSN.

I don't see the benefit of having a screen on the pad. I don't even like using the touch screen on my phone. :p

I think the use of 'pad' rather than 'screen' suggests it'll be similar to the rear side of the PS Vita. So the middle area at the back would allow for gestures with your finger tips perhaps?

Hmm, yeah I misread that. Still, I find the touchpad on the back of the Vita utterly useless as well. So far I haven't played a single game that utilizes it in a decent way, it just seems to be a substitute for something that could be done just as easily and quickly as a button press or using the touchscreen.
