PS4 and Xbox Rumours

If the new hardware can run Far Cry 3 in DX11 at 1080p at ultra settings with all bells and whistles on, from day one, then I will invest.

They should easily manage that and much more, with no perceivable load times. With all the cores they should dedicate a core to background loading, with at least 4gb of memory. Graphics should exceed current pc quality by far.

Doubt it. If its going to be based on AMD 7000 series mobile GPU hardware, then it'll match or just overtake current games on PC but won't exceed by far as you put it.

Have you seen what a 7970m can actually do when you get a decently coded game running on an i7? It’s impressive, very impressive. 1080 60fps is more then possible, next gen consoles will be today’s gaming laptop, trust me a gaming laptop can far exceed what current 7 year old console tech can do, which why wouldn't it, but next gen consoles won't exceed what PC gamers can do today with the right hardware.

Naughty dog might have a few fancy tricks with the next PS hardware, they're well known to push hardware, and I’d be interested to see what they can do with reportedly next gen PS4 hardware.

The PS4 specs to me look very close to what a decent spec gaming laptop gives you, Sony could be on the right track going down the x86 architecture route coupled with mobile GPU tech, today’s mobile GPU’s are no slouch and this could now mean 1080p 60fps (something that Sony said the PS3 would be able to do – but only for a few games in the end, and those games weren’t true 1080p with exception for GT5) console gaming is now on its way.

Sadly, PC gamers have been there for years and many have moved on to 1440p gaming, which is where consoles won’t be at when next gen arrives. So no next gen consoles won’t be exceeding PC but it’ll certainly I would expect match or slightly better 1080p PC gaming, which is a good thing. It needs a refresh, Ps3 and 360 are getting long in the tooth. But both have managed incredible gaming, some developers have managed amazing games with the limited hardware on offer..

0.79% of gamers are using 1440p according to the latest Steam survey....so not that many :p

Lol ok well I’ll quantify my statement with many ‘will’ be moving over to 1440p and anyhow by the time the latest gen consoles hit the market, 1440p will be gaining popularity.

I think what I’m trying to say is that current gen consoles were all about 720p, current pc gaming has been mainly 1080p, next gen consoles will be pushing 1080p, PC gamers will or have already moved onto 1440p or higher.

Just the natural why it goes, its been repeated with each gen of gaming consoles, the PC gamers have always been one step ahead – well for most part but that’s another story..

Yes well said. PC gamers tend to be a step or two ahead of consoles.

expect 1440p to be a common trend in the next 5 years whilst consoles will be fiddling around 1080p res

PC's are always a few steps ahead of consoles but these consoles will allow developers to produce games with much higher textures and graphical effects compared to what we are used to as it will actually be feasible to invest in PC power dependent features again! :D

I don't think the graphic leap will be massive for "next-gen" but I would expect the most graphically enticing games of this generation to be standard with the higher resolution, AA and textures as a bonus. Then come 6 months to a year down the line once devs have had more time with the kits, the market and sharing of information we shall start seeing some truly next gen games which will push PC's to their higher limits again. Also it looks like next-gen might be on much similar architecture that PCs are currently using some porting shouldn't be as much of an issue and with Steam box due to arrive at a similar time dev's may focus a bit more resources on the PC versions.

What games have been designed to fully exploit the pc?

Crysis 2, Far Cry 3, Skyrim have all been designed with the lowest common denominators in mind. The pc is limited by Windows OS. Resolution is mostly the limiting factor with the graphics cards now. There is no pc games that fully exploits the hardware we have.

The hardware in a console is fully dedicated and optimised to exploit its hardware. They dont need so much power.

The Fight Night Games games have extremely detailed characters which their likeness does not feature in any pc game that I know of. It may not be because they cant but because their is nothing that needs it, but still.

The consoles at least for the first couple of years, will exceed and look better than any current pc can do. They will use tricks and things hardly used in pc games, to get more geometry, more complex shaders, and more realism, so that if they made something like Far Cry 3 on it they could make huge dense forests. Especially with the memory, thats been the main limiting factor, everything has to fit in 1gb 32 bit, or less. That has held the pc back, with all these console ports. They may even end up even making pc games improve by proxy.

cod 2 on xbox 360 ran better than most mid to high ends PCs at the time

nope. cod 2 looked considerably worse on xpants 360 compared pc.

very much doubt 60 fps will be achieved on new consoles. or even 1080p.

name me 5 xbox 360 launch titles that played at 60 fps? baring in mind the resolution the games were playing at were <720p.

next gen consoles are already doomed.

look at hitman blood money vs absolution. absolution is a step back in every direction gameplay and scale wise in order to have a more complex graphical engine.

as the years went on games are forced to shrink down in order to compensate for more complex engines.
