PS4 and Xbox Rumours

I can't wait to see some concrete info from official sources on the next gen, but if any of the recent rumours/speculation are true then it looks like Microsoft could be in trouble, they seem to be leaning towards a kinect centred set top box/media centre that can play games while Sony seem to be making amends for the shortcomings on the ps3 (cell, difficult to program for and the ram issue) and giving us what we want: out and out gaming system. I own all the current gen consoles so no fanboyism here, I go on my Xbox most due to better cross platform games, better online experience, slicker dashboard and better controller, however the games I have enjoyed the most are all on ps3 (unchartered series and heavy rain where awesome) I just hope Microsoft don't forget that consoles are for gaming and try to fob us off with a kinect controlled dvr

I think thats exactly what they are doing, they want to be THE set top box to have with your HDTV, pretty lucrative if they monetise being the conduit like they do right now.

As do Sony, does not mean they have forgotten it's a gaming console, they make millions and millions from software sales why would they forgot that market they have spent so much time and money on taking a decent share off?

Id definitely say MS have reduced their focus on gaming moreso than Sony if the hardware spec rumours are vaguely true (to me the usage of DDR3 is really strange to the point where its unbelievable). Thats on top of the standard case that MS really just doesnt have anywhere near the first/second party developer support Sony and relies on multi-platform developers to sell their console, if Sony make the PS4 easier to code (not a difficult assumption to make) then that multi-platform advantage seems to disappear...

Its much of a muchness when inferring so much for a bunch of (hardware only) rumours though tbh, but Im concerned what MS are up to, but dont have that same concern over Sony - thats a surprise...

Not sure how you work that one out?

I would be more concerned what Sony are up too, gamers don't want rumble remember :D

Im confused who do MS own except for say 343, Turn 10, Lionhead and Rare? And didnt the Xbox CFO mention that most first parties are moving to pushing Kinect content a while back?

Durkin noted that in a similar way that Halo drove the original Xbox and showed partners what the hardware could do, Microsoft Game Studios is now pushing forward with new Xbox experiences, especially on Kinect

That doesnt fill me at all with confidence that MS really are on the ball when it comes to what we want as gamers from a first party perspective.

One game I'm properly exited about is Gran Turismo PS4. The PS3 version was crippled by the hardware big time, not allowing polyphony to create what they would have wanted.

Going off the rumored hardware, just imagine how polished and detailed the next GT will be!!

On another note how come the PS4 wont be having any system ram like how its done traditionally. System ram + dedicated GPU ram.

Surely 4gb GDDR5 for GFX and maybe 2GB DDR3 for system would be better? rather than both sharing the 4GB GDDR5

I think it's been demonstrated this gen that having shared memory is better.

Where?

What do you mean.

And wont it cripple the OS? The PS3 OS is embarrassingly slow and in game is borderline inoperable. Hope we don't get that again. Would very much want to be able to multitask, quick Google search whilst playing a game etc.

The 360's memory is 512MB shared rather than 256MB/256MB. Games perform better. One could argue it's because it's using a more straightforward CPU though.

ah ok

Wont 512mb be a little too little for a next gen OS?

Compared to the whooshy-whooshy dashboard of the Xbox, the PS3 interface is lightning fast. I do agree though that in-game, it's rather useless.

Not used Xbox in years so cant comment, but I do remember it being much faster in game and out game. Try looking at a friends trophies on ps3 takes forever syncing and loading.
