PS4 and Xbox Rumours

Theres an option to switch off sync on the Trophy part of the XMB - Im looking at now as we speak - think youre using the FL rather than Trophy Collection

ps3ud0

One game I'm properly exited about is Gran Turismo PS4. The PS3 version was crippled by the hardware big time, not allowing polyphony to create what they would have wanted.

Going off the rumored hardware, just imagine how polished and detailed the next GT will be!!

On another note how come the PS4 wont be having any system ram like how its done traditionally. System ram + dedicated GPU ram.

Surely 4gb GDDR5 for GFX and maybe 2GB DDR3 for system would be better? rather than both sharing the 4GB GDDR5

It took them over five years to complete Gran Turismo and it still wasnt finished(low res graphics, and cars). With the more than twice potential increase in graphical fidelity it'll probably take them over ten years to finish the next one.

I think a lot of time was wasted because of the constraints of the PS3 hardware.

Hopefully they have been hard at work since then!

What constraints? The actual game they produced wasn't that impressive really, considering the number of cars that were imported from previous versions of the games and didn't have interior views either. Perhaps if they'd wasted less time releasing games that were little more than demos you had to pay for, the actual game would have been released sooner.

Are you not aware of the much publicised constraints of the PS3 hardware?

If truth told, the real issue is not with resolution as even games at 720p with enough AA applied and fancy lighting effects can look absolutely stunning with the correct textures, but the issue that needs to be resolve for next gen is sync to screen.

I’m sick of loading a PS3 game up, and seeing the cinematic or engine struggle to maintain a smooth fluid 30fps without a huge tear ripping across the screen.

GT5 was so eagerly awaited for me, to be ruined by limitation on hardware as PD just couldn’t push that level of detail at 1080 and maintain 60fps without screen tearing.

Heavy Rain as good as it was totally ruined for me by screen tearing.

Reason I’ve mostly ditched the PS3 and gone back to PC gaming, as I can control the screen tearing, however ucharted 2 and 3 on the PS3 will always be up there with what you can really do if you code correctly and make best use of what you have, sure it wasn’t 60fps rock solid performance, but it didn’t tear so was much more enjoyable due to it… And didn’t lag, unlike Skyrim on PS3, that again is another reason I went back to PC, the lag in Skyrim was horrid.

Interesting article http://www.examiner.com/article/ps4-and-xbox-720-performance-potential-discussed-by-nvidia-dev If the Xbox does contain ddr3 ram then by the time the new consoles are in there prime by say 2016, it will look severely dated, 4gb of gddr5 in the ps4 would be miles better than 8gb of ddr3, a lot of that 8gb (along with cpu cores) would be taken up by stuff like the more powerful kinect, running apps in background like Skype and the much rumoured dvr capabilities which would use resources to record tv programmes while playing a game. Also if there is a shift towards a "mini" windows os rather than the traditional stripped down console os this will introduce some performance overheads, this idea of making the new Xbox a jack of all trades could really come back to haunt Microsoft. http://timothylottes.blogspot.ca/2013/01/orbis-and-durango.html?m=1 Link to original article/blog

Both Xbox and PlayStation to get eight-core AMD Jaguar CPU

New rumors indicate that both the Xbox Next and the PlayStation 4 "Orbis" consoles may be powered by an eight-core AMD Jaguar SoC. This chip has a relatively simple design, it should run cool and one of the benefits for Microsoft and Sony is that Jaguar should be relatively easy to manufactur at different foundries, as well as to shrink it to a smaller process node. Details about the graphic chip inside the next-gen consoles are still a mystery, but Sony's console will reportedly have a more powerful graphics engine than Microsoft's next Xbox. Further details about both consoles are expected later this year.

According to Eurogamer.net’s Digital Foundry, both Microsoft Xbox “Durango” and Sony PlayStation 4 “Orbis” are going to be based on highly-integrated system-on-chips featuring AMD Jaguar x86 64-bit cores. The SoCs are projected to be conservatively clocked at around 1.6GHz, which should ensure maximum possible yields as well as low temperature of multi-core solutions. Keeping in mind that video game consoles are designed to last for many years, it is possible that SoCs inside future PlayStation and Xbox will feature certain tweaks, optimizations and innovations that will not be available on personal computers for a while.

The idea to use AMD’s low-power/low-cost cores instead of high-performance x86 cores has both pros and cons. On the one hand, AMD’s Jaguar looks very promising on paper and has a number of advantages that may be especially valuable for game consoles, including 128-bit floating point unit (FPU) with enhancements and double-pumping to support 256-bit AVX instructions as well as an innovative integer unit with new hardware divider, larger schedulers and more out-of-order resources. On the other hand, AMD’s Jaguar is substantially behind the company’s high-end x86 cores when it comes to general-purpose performance and therefore some of the operations may take a long time to complete, unless there are not special-purpose accelerators integrated or the consoles will heavily rely on GPGPU [general-purpose computing using GPUs] technologies.

No new information here but since all the rumours appear to be based around the same specs I guess this is what we'll see.

It does seem like a well rounded system and several steps above the previous gen, however it's no monster powerhouse like previous generations have been. I think this will date worse than current consoles have if expected to last 7-8 years.

Last gen was based around a nvidia 7800 but with cut down features and on release, nvidia had all ready released the much much better 8 series.

The rumoured 7970m is the equivalent of a desktop 7870. By the time of release say late 2013, we may have seen the release of AMD 8 series cards, so similar in the respect. But one must not forget how significantly superior the 8 series Nvidia cards were to the 7 series nvidia cards. I doubt AMDs 8 series card will show such an improvement over the amd 7 series cards, so one could assume of that the longevity will be superior?

The thing thats getting me is, What will the games be like? Their isnt much difference between pc games and console games the now. Sure they look a little better and run smoother, but that wont be it will it? True the new engine from Unreal looks great, so hopefully their will be a big jump in graphics then, because from(what i had) C64, megadrive, ps1, ps2/xbox to ps3/360, each time it was "wow that looks amazing" The last thing i want is to say "Wow, that looks slightly better and runs a tad smoother"
