PS4 and Xbox Rumours

I don't quite get why they are going down this low-power road? It's not like it's a mobile platform. Is it to save a few quid?

I take it you mean the low power CPUs? the role of the CPU isn't as important as it used to be especially now that they can offload onto the gpu and utilise its raw performance to perform certain tasks, I reckon what we're likely to see is a beefy gpu with a few low power cpu cores thrown in on the same die

The CPU being low power isnt too much of a problem, it should allow for much more efficient usage if developers/engine coders can finally focus on multiple core usage over overly powered nonsense.

In all honesty all the CPU does is scripts/AI, Physics (which can be done on a GPU and better, but still relevant), Particle effects...I cant think of anything else for games beyond those main ones, i suppose graphics card calls count...but that's more technical.

No point in splashing out for them any more, not for games at least (baring a few exceptions), the GPU is now the ultimate focus, with system memory second (seriously detrimental with the 360/PS3 memory limitations...the 8GB/4GB should finally arrive at some sense), CPU third and everything else last.

We havent got a full reveal of Xbox yet.

However considering the likelihood of at most 3.5 GB being used for OS tasks (depends if it can allocate more, but who knows, Microsoft likely wont allow it), you are looking at 4.5 GB of crappy RAM with eDRAM picking up some of the slack for the GPU (likely just Anti-aliasing).

Compared to 3.5 GB of pretty neat RAM in the PS4, being much closer to the reality of most gaming PCs, the choice is obvious for more astute folks.

Depends on the games focus at GDC/E3 really, if all I see of the Xbox is Shooters and retarded Kinect games, then my choice is made.

As both systems are essentially based on the same architecture, I would imagine then that all cross platform games will be based on the lowest common denominator, i.e. the weakest system, and if the PS4 is in fact superior, this will likely only ever be exploited in exclusive games that are designed for the PS4 from the ground up.

If the architecture is so similar then it might be easier to exploit the differences. Its the programming side that will be important how easier it is to do things and how much access you have.

Which, as discussed in an article on a previous page, may be in the PS4's favour if Sony allow direct access to the hardware. Whereas MS will mandate everything goes through DX11.

that 8GB is slower tho

You missed the Joe Public part as well :)

I don't foresee them using that as an advertising line. Though they may if they really feel that they have been bested. But its always bested to stay away form technical stuff if dealing with the great unwashed.

I don't personally care who has the better machine. Evolution and all that. Though i do much prefer the 360 controller. Hands down. never liked the Playstation one. Microsoft clearly had a better online experience. I don't know how any one in there right mind could argue otherwise. I personally use my xbox much more than my playstation. Though my favourite game of this generation probably has to be the uncharted series. I think the xbox probably could reach levels that uncharted does. the developers how ever are just brilliant. its also not necessarily the graphics per se but the level of detail. and by that i mean if you walk around say uncharted 3. Theres a bit where you are in London and in a library. They have just created everything to such a detailed level. It really shows and gives the game such a finish.

As for 4K. i don't think we will be seeing that. I don't believe it will become the norm for probably 6+ years. I don't know any one with a 3D tv. most people i have spoken to don't even want one. A tv is not really something you replace that often. Besides I Imagine the power needed to achieve that will be ridiculous.

The specs we are hearing are probably going to be rather close to the actual dealio. Simply because so many different places are reporting the same thing but that could obviously be the rumor mill, but you never know.

Microsoft do seem to want to be the under the tv box thing. but i dont think theyll take there eye off the gaming market. they're not that stupid.

Very much looking forward to the next gen. see what it can bring :) not that ill probably be able to afford one when they come out :(

I prefer the layout of the xbox pad but prefer the build quality and the analogue sticks on the PS3 pad along with the Dpad. A combination of both would be best/

Apart from cross party chat, i dont think its that conclusive these days. PSN works flawlessly and its free. In the early days Xbox was leagues ahead, but no way is it £50 better now.

A 7970 can run 4k properly, just check that Toshiba vid on youtube. A 7870 (supposed ps3 chip) will by far be able to handle what a 7970 can do on a PC given the nature of consoles maximising hardware to its maximum.

do ppl think if ps hardware ends up being better than xbox, then for games like cod who are xbox biased, they would make it look/run just as good as the xbox even tho it can look/run a fair bit better on ps3 right?

I wonder how much of Joe Public is going to go for Xbox because 8GB memory is better than 4GB. :D

Joe public doesnt know their Jigga Watts from the Gigabytes and won't care, and will buy whichever has the best game.

And plenty of them wil lbe bought because the bloke in the shop told them too. The console war has never been about which has the most superior hardware - nintendo proved that by taking huge chunks out of MS & Sony's market share with the wii.
