PS4 and Xbox Rumours

The only reason I would get PS4 over Xbox is that on the play station you can play used games whereas on the Xbox you can't, I have also heated that the prices of games on each console will go up by at least £10

i guessing sony where just stating there own stuff they put out, and hope the rest follow suit. but as we all know new games are never on sale at rrp unless you shop at hmv or game that is :P

You can play used games on both of the current iterations and most likely they will both allow used games on the new iterations.

Obviously be prepared to pay for online passes for some 2nd hand online games, but that is already the case today.

Jonathan Blow, the independent game developer behind Braid, revealed his new game The Witness at Sony’s PlayStation 4 reveal. And while it’s not a PlayStation 4 exclusive, it will be on Sony’s platform first.

Speaking with Edge Online, Blow notes that the new, still-unknown Xbox 360 successor is “not strictly about games,” leading him to PlayStation 4 as a result.

“To me they talk about a console that is not strictly about games. It’s trying to be the centreof the living room device, which is fine and maybe it’s the right thing for Microsoft to do, business-wise. I don’t know; I actually don’t think it is, but they’ve certainly thought about it more than me!”

Blow then goes into his previous working relationship with Microsoft. “I’ve had a bad time working with Microsoft in the past. Maybe not super bad, but a moderately bad time in terms of business relationships. Other developers who are friends of mine have had a horrible time, so the idea of signing up again with Microsoft isn’t something I’d have ruled out, but there’s a certain amount of dread I have about doing that again.”

He notes that he doesn’t “have that [feeling] with Sony.” But he goes on to say, “Who knows, maybe it’ll turn out to be just as bad at the end! But I don’t think so.”

This isn’t the first time Blow has made his unhappiness with Microsoft known. He noted back in February that he doesn’t “have good communication with anyone at Microsoft right now,” while echoing the same general sentiment from the Edge interview, noting that his studio “like the positioning of the PS4 more than what we perceive Microsoft’s positioning is going to be.”

It's going to be interesting to see how MS position the next xbox. I'm hoping Blow just has some sort of axe to grind with MS.

I don't think MS will neglect gamers. But I do think it'll pretty much be a pc(I know consoles are pretty much pc's, but I mean an actual pc) . Back in 2011 it was rumoured that windows 8 was meant to be able to play 360 games, so I wouldn't be surprised if they have moved that on to the nextbox. Hasn't MS confirmed that kinect will be coming to pc? Possibly a new brand of pc's would soon come out after as 'xbox ready' either way I'm super excited.

There is no way in hell that the nextbox will be able to play windows 8 PC games.

The whole business model of a console is that the console maker charges the developer/publisher a licence to sell games on the console. This is the main way in which a console maker makes money.

Conversely, there is no way that a nextbox game will work out of the box on Windows 8 due to the massively different array of PC configurations out there running Windows 8, which the whole point of making a game for a console, is that you don't have to worry about that stuff, as it's a fixed architecture.

Ah yes, I was more meaning if a said pc came out that was 'xbox ready' it would just be the same specs as an xbox, just in pc form, but I was just letting my mind wander. Also I wasn't saying play pc games on the xbox, more xbox games on the PC. We pretty much know the screen layout will look very much like windows 8, well it doesn't seen that ludicrous that it will be windows 8, then the rumour would be true. I'll try and make a rundown of things actually confirmed and that could help us have a better idea.

I wonder if the nextbox will play 360 games? If it did (I guess through software emulation) it would be a pretty big differentiator in the early life of the console, where decent games are scarce. I know the CPU/GPU architecture is very different but I think last time round Microsoft did very well because they focused on software (xbox live primarily). If one of them was going to write software to make disc based games work on local hardware, it would be MS.

Sony have been a bit wishy washy (granted it's early days) with regards to what Gakai will do. Their priority should be to get it so you can play streamed copies of games you already own (PS3 or PSN) on day 1. I doubt this will happen though.

I doubt very much that new XBOX would have the grunt to emulate PowerPC architecture at any meaningful speed.

Me too really, but I'm just saying if anyone has the software know how to do it, it would be Microsoft, not Sony.

Have you seen GFWL or even Windows? their not generally well optimised. Large bureaucracy's do not make for good optimisers.

To be fair, in terms of raw coding efficiency, Sony probably have the crown on that front. This is primarily forced upon them due to the complex nature of the cell, but they did some pretty amazing stuff in terms of multi-core coding with it.

I wonder what will happen to the multiplatform games if the new xbox has as poor a memory architecture as the leaks suggest, I'm guessing they will code for the weaker console, being the xbox.

I cant see why (if the PS4 is easier to code for) they wouldnt just move to the PS4 for the lead platform for most cases, would be even more likely if (and its a big IF) Sony uses OpenGL for its API libraries.

I guess its down to developer preference and what platforms they are looking to sell to. If the new Xbox hasnt got as good memory architecture then surely theyll deal with that like multiplats did this generation with the PS3 and how it was harder to code for...

I just hope that one console blows the other out the water so I have an easy choice in deciding which console to buy. I would preferably only like to buy the one console this upcoming gen.

According to leaks the new Xbox has DDR3 with only 68GB/s bandwidth, it does have some cache ram to speed things up a bit, but it's no where near the sort of bandwidth the PS4 has.

They will either have PS4 as the lead platform and dumb things down a bit for the new Xbox, or just program for the lowest platform.

Yeah I know but Ive stated before that I just cant believe MS would go down that route - its very short-sighted and just a bodged way to attempt to get near the memory bandwidth the PS4 will have (worst case scenerio using rumours is half as much, but that would assume zero impact by the SRAM). The amount of RAM expected just seems to point to multiple applications running alongside a game at the same time, its hard to know how much of a restriction it might be and how well it will prioritise/manage certain concurrent tasks to avoid bogging down game performance.

On the flip side the problem MS has like Nintendo has with the Wii U is that they have an expensive bundled accessory to cost for in the overall price which is exactly the situation Sony had with the PS3 and the BD drive, Sony went they way of a premium price point, I just dont see another manufacturer ever making that mistake (well being substantially more expensive than the competition), so it could give credence to the reduced spec if the bottom line price point is crucial...

Right now considering what MS seems to be trying to acheive, it definitely seems far more of a gamble (or more corners cut) than what Sony looks to be doing, though we still dont know if Sony is going to price itself out anyhow...
