PS4 and Xbox Rumours

Reports that MS has registered a ton of stuff under the "Xbox Fusion" name?

This thing will be massively media-centred, I expect a big focus on TV/Movies/Music and general family living room stuff.

what is the point in this?

seriously we already have "smart" tv's, "smart" blu ray players, htpc's, etc, etc why add all this crap into a games console?

the only reason it is included imo is to increase their revenue from people buying from their store as opposed to other stores.

i hope such features don't impede the console as a games machine or it's development as such, with them focusing on increasing their revenue from sales of such services instead of improving the gaming side.

Why would it? If I buy a PC for gaming will it suffer from all the other things it can do?

This.

Just because it will (almost certainly) have a big media focus, GTA 6 and Forza 5 aren't going to be kiddified and dumbed down are they?

Depends on how they allocate resources, its probable its going to have the largest OS memory footprint because of all these additional features (especially background ones like Kinect will suck up a fair bit for sure) so that means less RAM to dedicate to games. Hell if its based on Windows 8/Metro UI and Direct X theres inefficiencies just there alone...

Still should be plenty but theres considerations that need to be made with the hardware if they pull focus from games...

To be honest, tech companies NEVER learn

Look at the mobile phones before the iPhone. They were rubbish, then the iPhone came along. Now other companies have finally caught up.

It's the same with smart TVs. They are not THAT smart are they, not to mention they are slow, clunky and half the apps don't even work properly.

I really hope the next xbox does something great with TV as its supposed to have an HDMI input  It's not like LG, Samsung, Sony etc etc havent had the time to produce a really great smart TV.

What are you on about?

Scheduling and the like, its going beyond watching a movie and heading towards Smart TV and streaming services aswell as the ability to real time update social networks while gaming. The main culprits though will be a flavour of Windows 8, Direct X and Kinect though...

Why would they have all features running in the background?

Ever used a Windows phone? I have and it was awful :p Darn thing took about 5 minutes to turn on and initialise. No it wasn't a Windows 8 phone, it was a lot older than that. But it served as a great example of why you don't want to put Windows on anything other than a PC :p

I honestly don't know why you'd want to put Windows on a console either. Shirley it would be more efficient to have a custom built (very minimal) OS with no added junk. It's not like they're going to allow a kb+mouse and let people run Office on it.

Why do you need a general purpose OS like Windows on a console? And with only 1 set of hardware, why do you even need DirectX? Seems like they're going to do their best to negate the strengths of a console, one of which is being able to get the absolute maximum out of your hardware.

I imagine it would be a custom OS.

Im confused dont you understand multi-tasking more features or having more background processes requires more RAM? Thought everyone knew that...

I have streaming apps, social media etc on my current gen consoles without them needing to be constantly running in the background eating ram? Why would they suddenly be multi-task features in this next gen?

A good example is Sonys share function which allows you to upload a snippet of gameplay (30seconds I think), so somewhere it will have to be recording this in case of upload via that button. Its not something we have now and everyone knows having something like FRAPS in the background recording does have impact on performance.

Major Nelson mentions TV as one of the focuses of the next Xbox so I cant see why something like recording media in a similar fashion wouldnt be an expectation?

The Sony share thing I assumed would just work like the rewind feature in Forza which does not seem to impact the performance? So we do kind of have such a thing now.

But yeah I guess if you are going to be watching TV, while playing a game while streaming a movie and uploading to FB then you might run into problems, but I imagine that will not be possible. :)

Hmmm, Im not sure how Forzas record function works, though I expect it record game data (so basically the position/states of the game entities and how they change over game time) than record the actual video feed to rewind. Makes it a far eloquent way to effectively record gameplay (loved that about Quake 3) and you just use the game engine to reconstruct the scene on the fly. Though there are lazy developers (looking at you EA and FIFA replays  ) who just make replays using rendered video in game...

Id be surprised if the console OS has that level of access to the game engine to do the same (if it did, why cant we do it in Windows already?), so I cant see how it wont record gameplay FRAPS style - but hey be nice to find out how they achieve it in the end.

Sounds like the hard disk is going to get a thrashing either way. Installing the game from Blu-ray, playing the game from the HDD whilst it installs and recording gameplay all simultaneously. Those heads are going to be a-movin'.
