PS4 and Xbox Rumours

Would PS4 come in different SKU models? I hope its not the same case as it was with PS3, where later models were more power efficient. I would rather all the features including power efficiency were already ingrained in a single model.

They don't make the early models less power-hungry on purpose, you do know that right?

I hope it's not called XBox Infinity. So cheesy. How about...

XCube
XBox: Revengeance
XBoxosaurus Rex
XBox III (pronounced 'the third')

OK I can't think of a good name either. But anything has to be better than 'Infinity'. Ack, the more I hear it, the more it makes me cringe :p

Indeed, I dont want to see improvements with regards to spec, as that would be silly. But power management and efficiency. Well those are a given as a console matures, and the manufacturing process matures.

why would the spec be upgraded?

the whole point of a games console is it has 1 spec to work with, so games developers can make stuff as efficiently as possible.

the more specs their are the less efficient everything gets.

the reason why some stuff usually works smoother on iphones compared to android is because their is like what? 6 (a complete guess) different iphones altogether. so to code a game to be compatible with 6 different phones is going to be easy and you can ensure it be pretty much bug free.

try and make the same thing on android where you literally have over 1000 different spec of android phones then yes, it's going to be buggy on some devices and not run efficiently or smoothly as it does on iphone.

a games console should never ever have its spec upgraded, they are built to last a generation (5-10 years) after that time a new one is made with better spec.

also to the other guy talking about different sku's please get a clue, their always will be different sku's, due to different hardware being used inside (like a different blu ray drive or hard drive, etc). also with time some parts become smaller, more efficient therefore use less power, different heatsinks need to be made, changing the design.

this is why the ps3 has 3 completely different "moulds", although every single one is pretty much the same spec wise (bar the original launch consoles with BC and extra usb ports).

It'll have to be called Xbox "something" though, I doubt Microsoft would want to put the Xbox 3 on the shelves alongside a Playstation 4, probably why they went with the circular lights and the Xbox 360 name instead of just calling it the Xbox 2. Infinity sounds fine in my opinion, I don't buy consoles based on which name I like the most. :p

That makes sense to me.

Yes it expects an internet connection, but it has an offline mode so you can play singleplayer games if your net is down or very slow.

The whole thing that kicked this off never said you wouldn't be allowed to play without the net, just uses scary words like "always on" and "requires" without ever actually saying what happened if you had no net.

Test units for what? Sounds like nonsense if I'm honest, they'll get demo units when the console goes on sale but a toy shop isn't going to have pre-release hardware.

Yep talking out of his backside.

They won't even have a production run of them yet. They'll be a few proptotypes by now. But almost everybody will be using the durango dev units that came up on ebay a while ago.

My mate who is a GSM at Smyths toys has said they are all getting test units of the new xbox around the end of may?!

lmao?

why would a store get a test unit?

the only people who ever get test units are games developers i would imagine so they can test out their code to see if the software they are developing works well on a console rather than a development unit.

that's like a car salesman at a mercedes garage saying they are getting the new 2014 F1 car in next week to play about with.

Sony's Indie Initiative Bonus Content

This month Sony shared with us its plans to make indie gaming an integral part of the PS4's ecosystem. We outlined some of the first indie games that will appear on the PS4 in the latest issue of Game Informer, but still had a ton of content left over to share with readers.

Below you'll find more information on five new indie games that are coming to Sony's systems. Each preview contains new screens and information about the game, plus a Q&A with the creators, discussing the projects in their own words and describing what it's like to be working with Sony. We also have our full interview with Sony's vice president of publisher and developer relations, Adam Boyes. Boyes outlines how Sony is changing its approach to working with indie developers, and shares what the PS4 will offer smaller studios.

Developers get the durango dev units. Which are basically just desktop PCs built to roughly the same spec as what the production models will have.

They bare no resemblance to any actual production xbox. The idea that "test" units exist in May for use by retailers is laughable.

I assume by Test Unit's he meant Demo Unit cabinet thing that'd be sat in store playing trailers and what not.

If these are coming out before the end of the year they'll want to get it advertised in stores so Joe Public knows it even exists.
