Well, both the PS3 and the 360 both introduced lots of things that had never been done before. And the Xbox and PS2 before them. I can fully see MS wanting to allow you to pause a game to answer a Skype call. What about all the new advertising features they would love to have (in game dynamic advertising) they'd need a few backgroud tasks running to manage this. Why not be able to pause the game and goto the dash? I have to admit, it could be handy. I'm not sure why you think "it's never been done before" means "it will never be done". Thank God it's not how the rest of the world thinks!
Are you kidding? OS doesn't simply mean the 'OS', it means the OS and all the background apps it requires to be running to give you the Xbox/PS experience. Besides, 3GB reserved doesn't mean it's going to be all in use most of the time (probably very rarely) but it means it is not available to games since the OS has said "Well, he might want to have a Skype, while browsing the dash, while a movie is paused over the top of his paused game".
Was.
Was.
Were.
Obviously, this is all speculation. But MS have recently come out (a few times I think) and said that the largest proportion of time on Xbox Live is spent watching movies, Skyping, listening to music and NOT gaming! What they have here is a smart box in front of the TV. Believe it or not, gamers are just not the biggest market - it's everyone else. If you really believe that either MS or Sony are primarily focusing on gamers, I think you're out of touch. We drove this, but now they've got the boxes under the TVs, there are much bigger revenues to chase after than games. The next generation ARE multi-media boxes primarily. Of course they are going to be gamer boxes and make the next gen look awesome, they still need us to purchase them over the current not-quite-there consoles. Of course games are still a market too (and a big one) - so they don't want to lose that.
Of course, I would rather the gaming had all the power available, but at the same time, I do use the 360 for movie watching. I am interested in some of the things the media hub will offer, so I do want the next gen to be a step in that 'overall solution' direction. Just a shame they can't whack more power in there 32Gb minimum I say... with dual quad cores. Obviously
I disagree with most your response to be honest, The was, was and were. Well console games are still primarily gaming machines. So still still and are.
As for the OS needing 1GB ram. I'm talking about the OS as a single entity, why would I include the ram the apps take up in that? An OS can run with a tiny minimum footprint still run apps that take up the rest of the ram. Well up to 4gb if needed. 1GB just for the OS, seems unlikely, as the os will be running background to the games generally, so it needs to stay as small as possible
I believe the XMB is down to something like 30mb, Do they really need to bloat it up to 1gb, what would they want to achieve over XMB in realistic terms?
The point is, when a game launches, everything empties to allow for the game to run as it should.
