PS4 and Xbox Rumours

Well, both the PS3 and the 360 both introduced lots of things that had never been done before. And the Xbox and PS2 before them. I can fully see MS wanting to allow you to pause a game to answer a Skype call. What about all the new advertising features they would love to have (in game dynamic advertising) they'd need a few backgroud tasks running to manage this. Why not be able to pause the game and goto the dash? I have to admit, it could be handy. I'm not sure why you think "it's never been done before" means "it will never be done". Thank God it's not how the rest of the world thinks! ;)

Are you kidding? OS doesn't simply mean the 'OS', it means the OS and all the background apps it requires to be running to give you the Xbox/PS experience. Besides, 3GB reserved doesn't mean it's going to be all in use most of the time (probably very rarely) but it means it is not available to games since the OS has said "Well, he might want to have a Skype, while browsing the dash, while a movie is paused over the top of his paused game".

Was.

Was.

Were.

Obviously, this is all speculation. But MS have recently come out (a few times I think) and said that the largest proportion of time on Xbox Live is spent watching movies, Skyping, listening to music and NOT gaming! What they have here is a smart box in front of the TV. Believe it or not, gamers are just not the biggest market - it's everyone else. If you really believe that either MS or Sony are primarily focusing on gamers, I think you're out of touch. We drove this, but now they've got the boxes under the TVs, there are much bigger revenues to chase after than games. The next generation ARE multi-media boxes primarily. Of course they are going to be gamer boxes and make the next gen look awesome, they still need us to purchase them over the current not-quite-there consoles. Of course games are still a market too (and a big one) - so they don't want to lose that.

Of course, I would rather the gaming had all the power available, but at the same time, I do use the 360 for movie watching. I am interested in some of the things the media hub will offer, so I do want the next gen to be a step in that 'overall solution' direction. Just a shame they can't whack more power in there :( 32Gb minimum I say... with dual quad cores. Obviously ;)

I disagree with most your response to be honest, The was, was and were. Well console games are still primarily gaming machines. So still still and are. :p

As for the OS needing 1GB ram. I'm talking about the OS as a single entity, why would I include the ram the apps take up in that? An OS can run with a tiny minimum footprint still run apps that take up the rest of the ram. Well up to 4gb if needed. 1GB just for the OS, seems unlikely, as the os will be running background to the games generally, so it needs to stay as small as possible

I believe the XMB is down to something like 30mb, Do they really need to bloat it up to 1gb, what would they want to achieve over XMB in realistic terms?

The point is, when a game launches, everything empties to allow for the game to run as it should.

Think your interpretation is different to mine and maybe a few others, anything outside of gaming like background processes (e.g. Kinect) including 'apps' will to me will use that OS RAM footprint. While the remainder is dedicated to gaming.

ps3ud0

On the controllers. I never got into the playstation due to the controllers. My hands are too small. And thus I have only played a few hours ever on them

I can agree with that, when you use kinect as an example. But to be fair kinect is integrated into the OS, and so its running while games are. Especially considering games implement features from kinect. I'm talking about those things you'd never want running, and I imagine the system developers wouldnt allow. Third party stuff, things that will degrade performance. even first party apps, like running system video player.

Personally I just think we'll see more of the same, We'll get a small footprint OS, running on 4gb of RAM, that will yes take up more memory while running certain first party features, but not 1gb for the os alone! And we'll just see the OS kick everything out of memory when it wants to run a game.

I definitely cant see MS or Sony making a console, and allocating a large chunk of memory specifically to the OS and leave it off limits to game developers. They want every last drop of performance they can get for the lifetime of the console.

I dont think MS are going to release a console, its going to be a fully functioning media pc, with a derivative of windows 8.

They would be stupid not to do something like that. They have the eco system, the apps. Consoles will be powerful enough to do anything so why just limit them to games. Of course it will be a locked, so you can only get things through the app store, but you will be able to get whatever developers are willing to sell. Maybe even photo editing, Microsoft word and such.

The 360 is 3/4 what your saying already.

Exacly, I'm surprised they didnt do it with that console, but then the app, internet thing wasnt so prominent. They've basically beta tested with the Windows 8 already. They would have to be seriously retarded not to do it now.

Sony wont have much of a chance if they do. That could be why Gabe is so worried. A fully functioning cheap pc in everyones front room locked in with a Windows OS and App store.

I'm hoping for Sony's sake that they'll integrate some Android App support or something as well as having their own because as stated above MS seems to have this already pretty well figured out.

Check out WoodysGamertag on YouTube. He does a pretty good review/rumour roundup of the PS4, Xbox 720, Steam Box and also the Ouya (which I had never heard of).

May as well just buy a PC?

It's bad enough sifting through all the junk and ads on Xbox Live, let's not make it worse.....

He's definitely worried about the Store added to Windows 8 where stuff has to be approved before it's allowed up for sale and MS get a slice of every app sold. It'd be very easy for Microsoft to kill Steam for Windows 8, sure people using Windows 8 can still go into Desktop mode and download the application that way but I don't imagine it'd be difficult for Microsoft to implement some sort of system whereby the only way to download anything at all is through the store.

Also why is everyone bum loving Android? I've used both Android and iOS extensively and while I'm not some kind of guru on the subject I've used them both enough to know that I wouldn't want either of them on a games console. :p

Don't understand why people want or hope for android support on a PS4, when I buy a console I want a proper gaming machine not an extension of a mobile phone especially not Android which I did not like in the slightest.

If they want to bolt some app onto it that I can choose not to use then fair enough but it would not be a selling point for me.

You again with these same nonsense comments, why do you spend so much time on the dashboard and why do you constantly sift through junk? What are you looking for that you need to sift through junk?
