Radeon RX480 4GB can be flashed to 8GB version.

Isn't this...like....technically....stealing? or something?

Nope.

You bought the card, you bought all 8 chips on it, you own the physical device you can do whatever you want with it. You can flash the bios, you can add capacitors.

Its not even comparable to software where you potentially buy a license to use it, you've signed no agreement (and even if you did it probs wouldn't be legally binding).

AMD knew full well they were handing out cards with more than what was written on the box, and to be honest, they don't care. There's no way they were so clueless to think nobody was going to look under that plastic hood and see what was underneath.

The vast majority of people that have gone out and bought a 4gb RX 480 don't know what RAM is (other than a number written on a box) let alone how to bios flash the thing... or what bios is for that matter.

Is suspect this whole thing was so they could stand on stage and say "... for under $200!" then they stop supplying the 4gb and it turns out there never was a 4gb version, just an 8gb with a different bios.

I think its time we get a 3rd GPU manufacturer :P NVidia screwing around with MSRP and struggling to produce enough chips. And AMDs smoke and mirrors with this memory thing and the power usage thing. Both seem to be as bad as each other :P Bring back the s3 savage and voodoo cards!

There's always Qualcomm and their ARM chips ;)

hahaha this.
Why supply it with more VRAM in the first place.
Surely they must have known people would find the extra memory.

Most likely AMD don't intend to sell the 4GB card for long so saved money by only designing a single 8GB PCB and getting that certified. 4GB cards are supposedly EOL on lunch day, all used as a marketing trick to advertise "Polaris from $200".

That's tragic really, The drivers should be out before the card so it releases stable, AMD pls

Yer but might well be a duff card. I have seen a few with probs and a few without, so fingers crossed it is drivers. I was a broken man after doing my early review lol and I look like I had been in a boxing match at the end :D

Is there a way to tell without taking the cooler off?

Yes at least you can be fairly sure, firstly clock your memory to 2000mhz (2000 x 4 = 8000mhz), if it isn't completely stable at this clock then its not an 8gb card. Also you can count the ram modules from the bottom of the card if you don't have a back plate, one of the stickers won't void your warranty if it's removed, the other one will 'Void if damaged' leave this one on unless you aren't bothered about warrenty. You should be able to count at least 6 ram solder points once that sticker is off, which means more than 4 ram blocks.

you missed the ATI 9500non pro unlock to 9700. Nvidia did have the 6800le to 6800gt unlock, but thats the only one i remember.

this is the first time i've known either company to lock memory , probably just did it to test two price points.

iirc the 6800gt unlocked to ultra as I had one. You just flashed the BIOS and it became an ultra, even though they were virtually the same apart from the speed of the core.

Opened my VBIOS in hex editor and where his showed 8GB and 4GB mine only shows 4GB and 4GB.

Apparently that does not confirm 8GB on the card, you need to check under the shroud and seeing as you got yours on release chances are it is 8GB.

You should consider flashing it, 8GB will sell quicker than 4GB. ;)

Anyone with 4GB cards will need ATIFLASH that now supports polaris and the 8GB bios

The 4G version will have 8 Ram chips. If AMD could simply leave 4 chips off, they likely would have done so. But they need 8 for the 256bit memory bus (8 * 32bit).

Ah ok I see so the only sure way of knowing is to open her up?
