I've just ordered a GIANT Alpecin team set of bib shorts and Jersey for cheap off ebay from China, (yes i know), if it's crap, it's only cost me £20, but if it's comfy and the padding feels good, then it's £20 well spent, I will report back when it arrives in three years time :p

I've done this, a friend at work did the same thing, they're fantastic, honestly! Can't praise them enough, when ever I'm on my bike, I'm in my bib shirts, no doubt about it, wore them for a 100 mile ride the other week, no issues, did 45 Monday, easy peasy.

I think I need to invest in some properly good cycling kit - doesn't have to be most expensive, or look good.... but properly nice bib shorts with a pad that's oh-so-amazing and a great softshell (what IS a softshell, anyway?)

And maybe some lightweight but good arm/leg warmers, and some thin neoprene and thin properly waterproof overshoes.

What is there out there for cheap, on sale and in a med/large size (probably large)?

I have some Dhb tshirts things for MTBing and they're quite good.

Reason I ask is I have some bib shorts that I bought a while ago from somewhere uk based, make their own, sell online type thing - can't remember who they are though.
They've served me well, but they're looking a bit tired now.

I wore those and my altura night vision jacket - claimed to be breathable -wasn't. Sweated light a pig in it and may as well have not worn it, other than for the visibility.

DHB kit is good quality. Endura and Altura stuff is nice too without spending Castelli money

Budget?

Prendas have a good range of cycling tops if you want retro or colourful.

I got some new Endura Thermolite arm warmers the other week (very pleased with them - the external gripper means they don't move at all), though I'd suggest visiting a LBS to try some on to get a good fit.

I went out to christen my new wheels

Good to hear they're going well! Which did you go for again?

Also reported it to Sustrans as it is a National Cycle Network bike path. The one guy said he had an accident few years back broke his nose and counted 9 people walk past before anyone stopped.

Kudos for stopping & helping mate, name of your ride on Strava now makes sense! We've gotta look out for each other as everyone else seems to hate us! ;)

Khamsins the way to go then?

'Bang for buck' (£100) I would say yes, but I'm half kicking myself that I didn't invest a little more and go for the Scirocco's when the normal (non 35 rims) were in stock and around the £170 mark. I assuming they would've been a substantial enough upgrade over the Khamsin's.

I'm gonna be ordering more soon, they're a lot faster and safer than the stock Giant ones I got with the bike.

They were bad! Didn't cut up too badly but a rubbish for grip, slidey slidey in the wet!

If you're a member of some facebook cycling selling groups you'll see Adam Blythe flogging some brand new team kit. All size small though so no use for normal sized cyclists.

He's on Strava too, did see him discussing flogging stuff on some ride comments.

Warmer ride in this morning, I'd spent the last couple of days fiddling with my sensors as lost them all on Tuesday. My HRM hadn't been picked up since so eventually gave up trying to repair it and changed the battery last night which seems to have solved it. Pushed a little harder than I intended to this morning and then thought I'd see if I could maintain it (effort & high HR). I could easily and didn't back off until closer to work when I remembered I need good legs for saturday lol ;)

Anybody have experience of bike bag/boxes?

In the past I've rented a Bike Box Alan which is based on the Scicon Aerotech Evo and is a great hardshell box but it costs an eye-watering £465 to buy!

On the slightly cheaper end is the soft-shell Evoc.

I'd be a bit worried about protection on a case like this but it seems to get largely positive reviews.

It needs to be able to fit a TT bike in there which they both claim to be able to.

Can you recover some of your costs by renting it out to clubmates etc?

I've got the 'roccos now after riding with khamsins for thousands of miles! :) they're a bit stiffer up front and rear but that's about it :P I've got the 35's tho

Ouch. Well done for stopping though :) Where about's is the bike path? I'll make sure to avoid it!

Fly6 arrived this morning, at work so haven't had a chance to play. Impressed with the packaging though, came with lot's of spare seat post mounts which is a nice touch. I flicked the light on quickly and it seems pretty bright. I'll try and change, and install it in time for tonight's commute.

My neighbour has a bag which he showed me the other day which looked pretty good. His only gripe was it lacked a handle where it could have used one. I'll ask him which one he has if I remember next time I see him.

Middle-ish. Maybe £50-70 on bib things and ... i don't know on other bits. Last arm warmers I got were from Aldi, but they're a bit thick.

Fulcrum Racing 3, as I got them from Merlin Cycles including GP4000s II and tubes for £303.

What are these recovery drinks you all speak of? I thought that was what ale was for :p

Failed to pick up my lock at Evans as I was still stuck in traffic 20 minutes after they closed :p Oh well, hopefully it'll still be there on Friday and it gave me a chance to add a new light to pick up at the same time.

Nearly went for the Lezyne Femto but I prefer USB rechargeable lights so went for the KTV instead even though it has 1/6 of the run time. Only need something for the twilight hours as the nights are pulling in now. I've got a Solarstorm but that is overkill for what I need and I hate having the separate battery pack uglying up my bike :o

Here's my first ever proper group ride. Enjoyed it much more than my single outing on Saturday which was a shorter 14m ride.

Good going! Group riding can be a great way to rapidly progress - pushing yourself to keep up with riders faster and fitter than yourself! ;)

I swear by my DHB kit for commuting, I wear a combination of Active & Flashlight jerseys along with flashlight bibs. I do have a pair of Active bibs but the pad is pretty poor... Flashlight are good but non-commuting riding the pad does hurt after an hours worth of harder riding.

All of my tights are Active/Vaeon, although I'll need to buy more for this winter due to quite a drop in weight/size compared to last year. I went through several DHB jackets, the 'Commuter' they did was brilliant in wet weather (but not very breathable), I also couldn't find one high-viz. I tried several others (DHB & Altura) but wasn't happy until I got my DHB EQ2.5! Incredible jacket and the most breathable waterproof one I've found.

A softshell is more of a 'roubaix' type of jersey/jacket. Think of it like a fleece. It'll keep you warm and dry without being full winter wear or full wet weather. I've got a DHB Windslam Blade like this. Can wear as just a jersey (like a Gabba) or on top of a jersey like a jacket.

For arm/leg/knee warmers I currently wear Sportfun NoRain, they keep me warm and bonus if some rain/shower protection. Not great for really wet weather but better than wearing full waterproofs in these warmer conditions, just get a wet arse from wearing normal bibs in the rain...

Overshoes, DHB Neoprene every time. Cheap and do the job well, far better quality and fit than the PX/CRC ones. Mine are going to last a 3rd winter.

Giant team kit from prendas isn't overly expensive, I actually ordered some Giant-Shimano (better looking kit than the G-A) jerseys from there last night (£39 each iirc). They do the shorts too, think it's all Etxeondo kit so not cheap knockoff kit like China ;)

I bought some 'Castelli' bibs from aliexpress china, they were ok but poor fit and the printed on colours soon faded/marked easily, I removed the pad and wore them through winter over my other bibs/tights as an outer/additional layer.

Good shout on trying them on, my Sportful NoRain leg warmers I have to wear really high (as I've got short legs!). If I wear the knee warmers low then I get the same coverage (down to overshoes)

I really want the new 2016 Specialized Tarmac S-Works Tinkoff frame, but it's £3k :(

That price range (expanding on my reply above) you should be able to pick up some Castelli in a deal, until recently I wore Northwave Logo bibs as my 'budget' for bibs was around that level. Great shorts but for rides 2 or 3 hours I was getting a little discomfort. Last couple of weeks I was able to grab 3 pairs of Castelli Evoluzione for £45 each, they are even better! After wearing them, I would even be tempted at full price (£75.00) in future...! I've been converted to Castelli bibs after having only poor experienced previously (with gloves, jerseys and bibs).

Schweeeeet! Enjoy! :)

Ooh cheers mr Roady - those castelli evoluzione look grand. I can't decide if I need L or XL. I'm somewhere between 34 an 36" waist trousers at the moment - which is I guess at the top end of L, but i'm coming down in size around the waist area...

I'm gonna be attempting 3-5 hours in the saddle soon, I think, well in several weeks, so if they're good for that, then bonus.
