Rome 2 : Total War

I've been giving it a proper try this evening, I can work with it whilst they fix it. There's enough of the old elements and some nice new ones to keep me entertained :)

Yeah why does everyone demand you pay them a load of money to trade with them.. I've not been able to demand money from them yet :\

Once you get a bit more powerful you should be able to get trade agreements easily enough at no cost, even with factions that don't like you very much.

Ah that'd make more sense, still too early in the game for me to get them with anyone who isn't my best buddy, was having the same problem as David with them wanting half my cash to trade for a pittance per turn.

Played til 200bc as the Iceni, so far I've been enjoying it quite a lot, united Britain and Ireland and taken over Brittany with the plan of uniting Celtica.

Turn times are long but not ridiculous, I think the main issue is that people are used to just the 10 or so factions in Shogun 2 and not the 50~ in Rome 2. My plan is to kill off as many as I can until turn times come down a bit :)

Had some issues in my last battle where I had around 5,000 troops on my side (3 almost full stacks) and they had around 2,000 coming in from sea. Frame rate remained high but the actual game update rate was ridiculously slow, the equivalent of around half speed play and nothing I did could bring it up, it was just thinking too much about what to do with every unit. I can understand that 7,000 units in one battle can tax the system but in that case don't allow that many units in a battle.

Having enemy attack you from sea is also very annoying, their slingers seem to be just as deadly if not more so from ship then on land and they're harder to hit because of the defense the ship gives them. I went through 4 units of slingers to rout 2 units of theirs that were in ships whereas mine should have realistically destroyed them while they bobbed around unable to aim properly.

My actual fleet also seems completely pointless against troop transports. One attempt at ramming and then they're boarding you and because they have twice as many numbers they overwhelm all your ships, not to mention their slingers killing half your sailors before you can get close. And their ships insisted on hunting down every last one of my fleet before even attempting to land.

All in all that was a very frustrating battle but I crucified them when they actually did try to land on the beach as I had 2,000+ troops lined up waiting for them as they sailed in one by one to the bay, nevermind the ballista sinking half their ships before they even reached the beach.

Most battles have been pretty enjoyable so far, the usual TW fare, AI not intelligent to do anything bar attack through a tiny gap and get destroyed by my slingers before coming near my troops. Open field battles are far more enjoyable for now but do tend to descend into mayhem but mostly that's my fault for losing control or assuming I've won the battle and settling into "destroy the routers" mode then realising they've regrouped and coming back to get me, or that they hid their best troops in the far tree line. That was pretty smart on their part and led to my first invasion of Brittany losing 2,000 troops and escaping with just one or two very damaged units back to Britain.

Should I take the plunge on this or wait for more patches and the price to drop a bit?

I'm not in no rush for a new game, but I do love TW!

Graphically it looks pants, hopefully going to be fixed in patching soon though. It's really hit and miss, personally I can't recommend buying it just now but the game does play reasonably well and it is improving as the patches come in.

Really hard to recommend though - until they've sorted the graphics out a bit I'd personally say wait until later in the year and try to get it on sale.

I have started a campaign, after doing the tutorial bit, and whilst I am struggling to get used to the UI and game changes, I never played Shogun II much so I have been more used to the older TW games, I must say that I am enjoying it.

The only mod that I am using is the Graphics Enhancement Mod...

http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?618115-R2-TW-GEM-Graphic-Enhancement-Mod

...which, imo, is absolutely stunning and the game no longer looks as though it is being played through a yellow filter - a bit like how Fallout NV looked to me.

I have not bothered about any of the other mods as yet as I would need to play a lot more to decide if they would benefit the way that I enjoy playing the game. The other mods that I have been following, when the forums hamster is working, are the ones being made by "Radious" over at the treacle like TW forums, they seem to have some potential.

I had looked forward to this TW Rome II ever since it was announced, having bought every one of these games since the first Shogun was released. Whilst I can understand some of the complaints being posted about its performance and stability it does seems a rather good first release compared to how these TW games seem to have been launched in the past.

I am not sure how much I'll miss things like, guard mode, seasons and two or four turns per year, family tree, walls, roads etc etc etc until I have played the game long enough to see how it balances out without them.

With CA's commitment to weekly patches, and the beta to patch 2 should drop today, it will be great to see how this game evolves and shapes over time, along with the great work done by the modders.

My only concern just now is any patches messing up saved games, you know how you sink time into these games - I would cry if I'd gotten into it then had to start over before completing a play through ! :D

I wouldn't say it looks pants. The campaign map is beautiful, battle wise I'd say it's on par with Shogun 2 for the most part and better in others. When you zoom in all the way on the units they don't look fantastic but apart from that I've not noticed anything too bad. Style wise though it's a bit annoying, it's nigh on impossible to tell the different types of units apart by just looking at them, I remember back in the original Rome you could tell your archers from your slingers, your triarii from your hetarii.

I believe this is the main reason I keep losing multiplayer battles!
I simply mix my units up. I can't tell at a glance which are my veteran units and such. and as you say, I mix up javelins/slingers/archers as they all use the bow&arrow symbol...
It's quite frustrating when you're concentrating on many aspects and you can't easily tell whats what without mousing over them >_>

The battles however are over very quickly, they or you can soon route an enemy, even with mods but I'm sure over the next few weeks it'll all be patched up.

The speed of battles is a design choice, not something I would expect to be "patched up".

Thankfully, the various battle mods are already improving the experience in that regard.

Two ways to save games, local saves by using CTRL+S, and cloud to Steam by using ESC and save, then select Cloud.

You can also save to local using this method as well.

So this shouldn't mess up your saves.

Performance is okay for me now aswell, but that's probably due to dropping the settings to very high, the game is ugly as hell on any setting so may as well have smooth framerate. Big problems on the campaign map though, lots of slowdown and stuttering. If you click on one of your armies, and then mouse over an agent, does it lag horrendously for anyone else?

The Radious Graphics Mod fixes that and removes a lot of other annoying things in the game. I can fully recommend it, and his mods compilation is even better!

Someone asked the exact same question a few posts up.

My bad, thanks for pointing out my stupid :)

Cheers, I appreciate the honesty. I think I'll keep an eye on the Daily Deals thread until this rears it's head on there for sub £20 :)
