Played til 200bc as the Iceni, so far I've been enjoying it quite a lot, united Britain and Ireland and taken over Brittany with the plan of uniting Celtica.
Turn times are long but not ridiculous, I think the main issue is that people are used to just the 10 or so factions in Shogun 2 and not the 50~ in Rome 2. My plan is to kill off as many as I can until turn times come down a bit
Had some issues in my last battle where I had around 5,000 troops on my side (3 almost full stacks) and they had around 2,000 coming in from sea. Frame rate remained high but the actual game update rate was ridiculously slow, the equivalent of around half speed play and nothing I did could bring it up, it was just thinking too much about what to do with every unit. I can understand that 7,000 units in one battle can tax the system but in that case don't allow that many units in a battle.
Having enemy attack you from sea is also very annoying, their slingers seem to be just as deadly if not more so from ship then on land and they're harder to hit because of the defense the ship gives them. I went through 4 units of slingers to rout 2 units of theirs that were in ships whereas mine should have realistically destroyed them while they bobbed around unable to aim properly.
My actual fleet also seems completely pointless against troop transports. One attempt at ramming and then they're boarding you and because they have twice as many numbers they overwhelm all your ships, not to mention their slingers killing half your sailors before you can get close. And their ships insisted on hunting down every last one of my fleet before even attempting to land.
All in all that was a very frustrating battle but I crucified them when they actually did try to land on the beach as I had 2,000+ troops lined up waiting for them as they sailed in one by one to the bay, nevermind the ballista sinking half their ships before they even reached the beach.
Most battles have been pretty enjoyable so far, the usual TW fare, AI not intelligent to do anything bar attack through a tiny gap and get destroyed by my slingers before coming near my troops. Open field battles are far more enjoyable for now but do tend to descend into mayhem but mostly that's my fault for losing control or assuming I've won the battle and settling into "destroy the routers" mode then realising they've regrouped and coming back to get me, or that they hid their best troops in the far tree line. That was pretty smart on their part and led to my first invasion of Brittany losing 2,000 troops and escaping with just one or two very damaged units back to Britain.
